Even COVID-19 Can't Kill Both Siderism

Politico is an old hand at this simple, time-honored means to Beltway media wealth and success.

Take literally any Republican-manufactured disaster.

On Wednesday, McConnell’s staff informed House and Senate leadership staffers that the bipartisan group’s attempts to marry $160 billion in state and local aid and a temporary liability shield — major sticking points in the ongoing talks — probably won't fly with most of the GOP, according to a senior Democrat familiar with the discussion.

String together a few quotes from shitbag Republicans:

“We tried everything that had any remote possibility of success. We tried having Secretary [Steven] Mnuchin do the negotiating,” countered Sen. John Kennedy (R-La.). “Many of the Democrats screamed, ‘Well McConnell needs to be involved. Now McConnell is involved and they’re still upset.”

Hunt up some craven Centrist Chris Wick willing to shit on their own party in exchange for a few lines of media attention:

“People love to blame the Democrats, but right now, the White House and the Senate are on different pages on what they’re calling for,” said Rep. Elissa Slotkin (D-Mich.), a swing-district Democrat who’s been critical of her party’s strategy on Covid relief. “There’s blame to go around.”

And voilà!  Instant Both Sides Do It headline.

‘Get off our damn asses’: Stimulus debacle exposes broken Washington
Top negotiators can’t agree where to start talks let alone how to finish them.

And the rest --

It’s the latest evidence Washington is broken: at the peak of the worst public health crisis in a century, the White House and Congress are struggling to deliver another round of relief. And time in the lame duck is quickly running out.

-- can be mindlessly extruded --

Maybe, somehow the bipartisan group finds success and bridges partisan chasms on money for local governments and shielding businesses from litigation. Or perhaps party leaders come out of their shells and cobble together a deal at the last moment.

-- using the all-purpose --

Top lawmakers can’t even agree on where to start negotiations, much less how to finish them.

-- Beltway Both Siderist algorithm.

... Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah), a leader of those talks, suggested Congress may need to punt disagreements on liability and local government aid until next year.

And lawmakers in both parties continue to squabble internally about what they should and shouldn't accept in a deal.

Remember, this started out as a three trillion dollar COVID relief package that Democrat passed in the spring.

That Democrats then cut by a third to appease Republicans.

That Democrats when cut by another third to appease Centrists.

And for their troubles, Mitch McConnell just told them all to fuck right off.

No Half Measures

Mitch McConnell should be cut by two thirds and distributed amongst the poor.

Both siderism is invoked whenever Democrats fail to completely fold their position as opposed to situations when Democrats are "intransigent" because they fail to accept any and all demands made by Republicans. On the flip side, if an agreement IS reached because the Democrats folded on 99% of their agenda Republicans are lauded for their willingness to meet in the middle. When Republicans refuse to negotiate anything they aren't being intransigent but instead are described glowingly as adhering to their principles.

Both siderism will never go out of fashion until the killings start. Tim McViegh has studiously been forgotten even here in Michigan. McViegh the very first thing I thought of when the cosplayers with their guns on the State House steps appeared in April. I have yet to see him mentioned yet here or anywhere. Try to imagine a NY Times reporter asking diner customers about him. Your chances of winning Power Ball and Mega Millions the same week are better.

This liability waiver bull. The notion that somehow, in order to feed hungry people, help them pay their rent, by giving them some of their own money which they gave to the government thinking it would protect and take care of them, the notion that we need to TRADE anything for that, that there needs to be a DEAL with corporations, that we need to give McConnell something in order to prevent mass evictions, is ludicrous. No, we don't need to give the rich anything, especially not a license to skip all responsibility for making safe workplaces. The tax adverse rich, and the cheating corporations aren't giving us the money, nor is Mitch. The money belongs to the people who need it.
