I Took This More Than 20 Years Ago...

...with my Canon PowerShot A95 digital camera.

The signs went up shortly after Salem Communications acquired the station in 2004 and flipped it from Spanish-language programming to all-conservative/all the time, talk radio.

Salem was on a buying spree at the time. Between 2000 and 2008, its all-conservative programming footprint grew by roughly twenty net stations, though the gross number of acquisitions was higher because Salem frequently sold, swapped, and consolidated signals during the same period.

The result was that, at almost any time, anywhere in the contiguous 48 United States, you could find an AM powerhouse station slandering the Left, 24/7.  Depending on the time of day, you'd hear degenerate gambler and author of the "Book of Virtues" Bill Bennett,  Laura "Eva Braun-Nose" Ingraham,  Dennis "Prager U" Prager, Michael "Irrelevant Jabbering Mustache" Medved, Michael "The Savage Weiner" Savage or Hugh "Cyborg Sent From the Future to Destroy America" Hewitt.

That means Salem's portfolio grew by about 20 stations net between late 2000 and late 2008. However, the actual number purchased was higher because Salem also sold, swapped, and consolidated some stations during that period.

And mind you, Salem wasn't even the most prominent dispenser of wingnut poison across this Land of the Free.  Tired of Michael Medved running his mouth but still need your fix of Libtard hating? Spin the dial just a little and you'll find the Premier Networks ready to fill your skull with incandescent rage against imaginary enemies.

At the time, the Premier Networks was syndicated to around 650 stations from coast to coast and it's main lineup was (surprise!) Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity and, later, Glenn Beck.

We're your tastes a little more boutique and regional?  ABC/Citadel had you covered.  They didn't own stations, but they syndicated their conservative programs to several hundred stations and featured the likes of Charlie Sykes, Mark Levin, Larry Elder and Mike Gallagher.

And if that wasn't enough to slake your thirst for hatin' on the Left, there was the feisty,  independent Talk Radio Network.

Against that absolute blitzkrieg of well-financed, nationwide saturation Conservative programming (and Fox News, and all the well-funded conservative magazines and rapidly multiplying websites) the Left had this pea-shooter: the financially unstable, multiply bankrupted and incompetently managed Air America.  Which, at its peak, could be found on a mere 50–70 affiliate stations.

It had terrific on-air talent -- no doubt about that -- and when I lived in Chicago I was an Air America listener, but it was a tricky business.  Frequently I had to walk my radio around my condo until I found a spot where I could pick up the signal.    It had the staticky intermittence of a French underground pirate radio sending German troop movement intel across the channel -- hardly a match for the million megawatt megaphone the Right had built for itself.

Anyway, that was the state of play more than 20 years ago here in the Home of the Brave.  So the next time someone tells you the Republican base went suddenly and inexplicably berserk with rage, racism, and grievance after Donald Trump showed up and put the whammy on them, spit in their eye and show them this post.

Nothing about this was sudden. It was financed, distributed, syndicated, and broadcast -- everywhere, day after day -- for decades.

Me on The Hal Sparks Radio Program Mega-Worldwide

In these evil times -- especially if you spend much of the day behind a keyboard -- it’s easy to start thinking you’re alone out in the tall grass. That’s why the chance to spend a couple of groovy hours in good company with fellow travelers is a jewel beyond price. Many thanks to Hal (and Andrea) for inviting me to hang out with him, Johnny Million, and Phil Ittner while my wife was off communing with her knitting cult in Chicago.

And the Keynote Speaker at the Sangamon County Republican Lincoln Day Dinner This Year Is...

This guy.

Loves, loves, loves his warrior "brother" Whiskey Mango Hegseth.

Loves, loves, loves Il Douche...

Despises Joe Biden...

And, just for fun, drops a big hint as to why Kamala Harris campaigning with Liz Cheney failed to flip Republican votes:

I'm sure he'll be a huge hit with the local meatheads.  After all, this is the big local Republican fundraiser, and donation and sponsorship options remain the same as last year when their keynote speaker was Trump's very own then-soon-to-be brownshirt deportation goon, Tom Homan.

The year before that the headliner was serial liar and David Plouffe's bestest podcast buddy, Kelleyanne Conway..

The year before that, it was Charlie Kirk, which I wrote about at the time.

And before Chuckles Kirk it was Candace Owens, which I also wrote about at the time

And before that it was Jason Chaffetz, one-time congressperson and Fox News troll who I believe now lives in Donald Trump's underwear drawer, which, yep, wrote about that one too.

The year before that it was Fox News in-house train-wreck/barfly,  Jeanine Pirro.  Wrote about that.

The year before that wingnut-network-job-hopper and H.R. Haldeman stunt-double, Corey Lewandowski.

The year before that, in 2016, it was none other than Fox News prime-time Gorgon and Keith Olbermann's former girlfriend, Laura Ingraham.

And on and on and on.

If you were ever curious about how we out here in the cornfields have been so consistently, dead-on accurate for decades with our predictions about the trajectory of the Republican Party, while our elite professional political media has been so repeatedly and catastrophically wrong about the GOP, it's really pretty simple.  Unlike our our elite professional political media, we actually live out here in the real world, chock-a-block with real Republicans who have never been shy about what they really believe.

In fact, as I was writing up this obscenity last year, the Hugh Hewitt Show was playing on one of the two big radio station in the area.  He's on 9AM-12PM, Monday through Friday.  And if I didn't want to listen to Hewitt, I could always tune in to the other big radio station in the area where, at that moment, the Brian Kilmeade Show was playing.  He's on 9AM-11AM, Monday through Friday.

Later in the day, on the first station, you get Sean Hannity followed by Mark Levin.

Later in the day on the other station you get Dana Loesch followed by Erick Erickson

The first station pads out it's weekend offerings with America First with Sebastian Gorka, The Larry Kudlow Show, Newsmax's own Chris Plante on the Chris Plante Show and, hilariously. The Weekend with Michael [Heckuva Job, Brownie] Brown.  Now that Gorka has been hired by the Trump regime to scare small children, I dunno is he's still on the air.

The second station takes its foot off the wingnut gas over the weekend with shows like American Family Farmer,  Let’s Talk Cosmetic Dentistry and The Jesus Christ Show, but it does find room late on Sunday night for Judge Jeanine Pirro.

This is the ambient radio environment out here in much of the real world -- the poison that Republicans out here in the real world are steeping in every day --  and it's been this way for going on 40 years now.

And there is absolutely no fucking way to fail to notice it, unless your job as an elite political media professional is to deliberately fail to notice it.

A BradCasting We Will Go

The inimitable team of Brad and Desi were kind enough to invite me to join the redoubtable Digby on their cool radio show/podcast joint.

We had a ball.

If you'd like to hear The Ancients of Blogging discussing state of our politics (and me not swearing even a little bit... until the mics were shut off... then, hoo boy!) click the link here.

Was kind enough to invite me on Radio Or Not today.

You can hear it here, if you're of a mind to.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I certainly had fun :-)

Thanks, Nicole!
