I Have a Trick To Show You

Using nothing but words-in-a-row, I will now demonstrate why my Strategic Give-a-Fuck Reserve is as dead and empty as interstellar space and why I have never been more firmly convinced that the entire Right and all of their Both Siderist enablers and Bush-regime Dead Enders media enablers need to go.

Ready?

Here's the trick...

 + + + + +

Once upon a time, Republican’s were known to have consciences. Even the most conservative among them would rise up from time to time over matters of principle.

Consider this statement from Representative Lawrence Hogan, a Republican from Maryland, from over thirty years ago, as the Watergate scandal was coming to a head:
“The thing that's so appalling to me is that the President, when this whole idea was suggested to him, didn't, in righteous indignation, rise up and say, "Get out of here, you're in the office of the President of the United States. How can you talk about blackmail and bribery and keeping witnesses silent? This is the presidency of the United States." But my President didn't do that. He sat there and he worked and worked to try to cover this thing up so it wouldn't come to light.”
Consider that statement made by an agonized man when he was confronted with evidence that the leader of his Party had lied to the country, while you consider the rolling, impeachable freakshow that is the Trump Administration
...

There’s one helluva long list of lies to choose from -- just pick a half dozen of your favorites.

So to the many Moderate Republicans who are angling for their tiny places in history – for the elementary school cafeterias and highway on-ramps that they hope will one day be named for them – I would ask in all seriousness just how in the Hell do you think history will judge you?

At this point, you know the Administration was and is lying to you.
...
You know that liars and thugs are being appointed to vital, high-profile jobs.
You know the courts are being packed with ultra right wing lunatics.

You are the same people and belong to the same Party that was more than happy to spend tens of millions of dollars going after Clinton on the whiff of a hint of a suggestion of something untoward, and you were quite willing to sit at that fishing hole and lob dynamite into it for seven long years until you knocked something loose.

In light of that, what I don’t quite understand is how you’re going to explain to posterity how you refused to bother to even investigate any of this. How you’re going to sell “I never knew” and “I never bothered to find out” to the history books as anything other that rank cowardice and towering hypocrisy once the multiple, interlocking Trump Ponsi Schemes fall apart, given how much evidence of wrongdoing is right there in front of you.

OK, did you spot the trick?

No?

Well since you've been so patient with me over the years and such a good audience, I'll let you in on the secret to this particular trick.  What you just read is a long excerpt from a post I wrote 12 years ago about the Bush Administration.  I have made some very tiny modifications to it so as not to tip my hand during the Pledge or the Turn, but what you see is 95% what I wrote way back then.

And 12 years later I now have definitive answers to my own questions.

First, there are no "moderate" Republicans.  There are just "cray" and "cray-cray".  And they all must go.

Second, for these Republicans, there will never be any need to explain anything to "posterity" because for Republicans, the past and future simply do not exist the same way they do for normal people.  As President Stupid has proved over and over again beyond any doubt, for Republicans, Past and Future are completely malleable, and can be folded, spindled, mutilated and otherwise "doublethinked" into and out of existence depending on which direction Fox News and Hate Radio needs the re-programmable meatbag base of the Party to jump today.

And, finally, they plan to get away with it this time using the same blunt-force trauma to the skull of democracy  they used last time.  And the time before that.  And the time before that. They plan to lie. Over and over again.  Lie their asses off.  Lie at 120 decibels, all day, every day.  Lie while their Beltway Both Siderist enablers strew fragrant "Both Sides Do It" blossoms along the whatever path Republican liars choose to follow.

They will gas up the venerable Bush-Off Machine, slap on a new coat of paint, and once again magically transform a catastrophically failed Republican president's raving, racist, imbecile supports into tens of millions of innocent "independents" who never even heard of Donald J. Trump.

All of this has happened before and all of it will go right on happening again and again until there are enough of us acting in concert to bring down both their Pretty Hate Machine and the High and Holy Church of Both Siderism for good and all.

Political Tourettes. Keep at it until your base is completely devoid of any capacity for patriotic outrage when "their side" is cursing a blue streak in the Vestry. Father O'Brian will also close his ears and say nothing because he knows that those with this particular strain of political Tourettes are blessed by the Lord and the Party. The Tourettes "sufferers";may be a vex, slander and disease upon the populace as a whole, but they and their true believers will fight to make sure that "certain people" will not have the agency they enjoy and shall never be enjoyed by their lessers. Rince, repeat. And don't forget to throw in: "Both sides do it".

I still have an ounce of cynical hope that some GOP politicians will glance at their Geiger counter and notice the needle pegged and then snapped. Most of them, sure, are insulated behind dumb-as-fuck graphite bricks known as "the base."

But many aren't so lucky, and some of them will hear the alarm of Ye Olde Reptilian Brain screaming to run like hell away from the criticality. Because that pile is surely going to cork off.

"...to bring down both their Pretty Hate Machine and the High and Holy Church of Both Siderism for good and all."

But the MONEY, Drifty. How will we ever resist all that lovely MONEY that comes in? Cause you know if the Pretty Hate Machine and the High and Holy Church of Both Siderism ever see the way the wind is blowing, they will spend and bribe and grift to get out of any and all responsibility.

And a lot of us will take their money in order to get food for the day. Cause they will have lowered us to starving beggars.

One more reason the President Pro-Tem of the Presidency doesn't care about his place in history is that that's not what he's in it for. He's a perfect example of the 21st-Century CEO: all that matters is this quarter's numbers and making his pile before everything goes south. In that respect, things are going great.
