doing a bit of catch up of late.
Answering your call about what
sci fi initially intrigued the the tingler in the cerebellum.
For me it was some of the classics of, The Mummy, Wolfman, Frankenstein. This led to more fantasy type stuff like Buck Rodgers, Batman. The day the earth stood still, The Blob and Forbidden Planet. Of course the Time Machine and Journey to the center f the Earth. 20,000 Leagues under the Sea and Mysterious Island.
Mysterious Island first by Book and then the movie.
Not sure where these fit in your definition of Sci Fi or if they skim the outer perimeters of the boundaries.
For me, they are imagination from reality and sometimes what could be or could have been, again in imagination world.
It is astonishing so many scientific advances have appeared in Sci Fi before becoming reality. NO, Tang was not one of them.
