Every time you think we've seen the bottom, every time you think there's no possible way these people can be shown to be more craven, more hypocritical, more power-hungry, less concerned about the nation and people they swore to serve... every time, we always see the basement has no floor level. It's not even a basement. It's not even a drill shaft through the earth. It's a singularity.
Every time, they show us there's no limit to their deceitfulness and selfishness. No point at which they discover they're humans with consciences and some vestigial remnant of a moral compass. Every time, they show us they've sacrificed such things for power at every possible opportunity and will do so again each time they're given the chance.
Cha-Kor: Jor-El? Where do they go? Jor-El: To a place where they can harm no one... and no harm can come to them. -- Steve Gerber, "Phantom Zone: The Final Chapter" (DC Comics Presents #97, cover date September 1986)
