I saw the headline yesterday and was thrown into a few moments of total disorientation. It was freighting. Where am I? Is this all real? How can this be real? Was the NY Times playing a joke on us? No I decided. It's bigger than the NY Times. It's the cosmos itself playing this joke I'm convinced. I am also certain that if I read it my brain would break and I'd be strapped in a chair for the rest of my life. No thanks. Please don't tell us about it.
i subscribe to the NYT (ok, my wife does...) but my go-to regimen is to NOT read brooks but to read your commentary...
saves a lot of time i could use better by sleeping or playing solitaire and a lot of wear and tear of enamel by not gnashing my teeth...
brooks is the cooler...he is there to lugubriously cool the rich and centrist hooples...the enablers. there will be a trump 2,3 and 4 because it works and while lowering taxes, killing voter's rights and generally making life miserable for anyone who isn't rich brooks will regrettably use the votes of the january 6 patriots...what could a a kindler and more gentle fascist do?
And if it is, how would we know? Brooksie? Yoohoo?

That piece is the very definition of a thumb sucker. The. Idea that they pay him for that crap is mind wobbling.
At the risk of incurring scorn here, I will say that Brooks seems to touch upon (though takes another tack, or maybe doesn't fully understand it) a very real concept, the most profound that I've ever contemplated.
In summary:
1. A brain is a prediction machine.
2. The human brain is a very powerful prediction machine, particularly due to complex social interactions.
3. It creates models to interpret and predict reality.
4. This continuum of endless and constant modelling creates the illusion of consciousness.
You can look this stuff up, and if you make the effort to understand #1-3, particularly the nature of the modelling, then you can make the jump in #4, and then hoo-boy. Worth the effort.
I saw that thumbnail and almost immediately regretted the $4 I just sent the goddamn New York Times to retain access to Paul Krugman's weekly newsletter, but then I remembered that without that newsletter I would never have known about some of my favorite bands.
I don't read DFB, so having him on the same website sort of counterbalances the fact that Rising Appalachia and Lucius are things that I know exist...

Not sure if he considers self awareness with sanity, one's own consciousness and ability to think for oneself critically.
There is a baseline required and many never established one and their vision cannot see any lines. Add that to not learning from experience and mistakes in life.
He can ponder out loud that if he has Ass COVID. ZIs he aware enough in his mind that there is no Ass ventilator to save him?
No matter if he says he contracted it from a toilet seat.
