While part of your advice not to put too much faith in any politician is warranted and useful, I also can't help but feel that liberals have a particular burden of having to deal with politicians they elect betraying them. At least conservatives deliver some of the raw, red meat their base brays for.
Fucking up the judiciary, making life harder for women, rolling back critical social programs, putting brown kids in cages, etc. It's not actually helping their class interests, of course, but Democrats abandoned the working class forty years ago too. At least the pig people are getting some of the things they care about.
When liberals rally around somebody and don't just promptly fail, they're Clinton or Obama instead. Couldn't scramble fast enough to sell the farm. Obama especially took all the beautiful, radical energy in the wake of Hurricane Dubya, and dissipated it all. Eight years, a part of that where Democrats held all three branches of government, and the result?
Near enough to goddamn nothing. Not nothing, but its second cousin.
So yeah, liberals should get used to being betrayed, as long as they keep supporting neoliberals and expecting hope and change. Fortunately, unlike usual elections, this time you have an actual choice of whether to get fucked again by the establishment.
You tell the Left not to re-litigate 2016, but how about you actually do think about why your party was delivered the most humiliating defeat in American history? And, more to the point, whether Democrats would like and enjoy a repeat performance.
