In lieu of another chapter of "Sunday Morning Comin' Down", here is a short, unfair history of teevee journalism documenting its devolution from a cadre of truth-seeking pros to a cesspool of moneyed narcissists and gossip mongers.

Modern journalism is born to music from "The Fog"! Very fitting.
Started long before the fall of the Berlin Wall. Hell, started before Watergate, and used that brief "golden age" as "proof" that the "liberal media" were anti-capitalist (and thus Soviet fifth-columnists) and anti-American. At best dupes of Soviet propaganda, at worst active agents of The Evil Empire That Will Enslave Us All If You So Much As Blink(tm).
Mix that with corporate consolidation, careerism, the rise of teevee journalists as highly-paid quasi-celebrities themselves, intimidation of those who can't "get with the program", knead thoroughly, leaven with budget cuts to reporting staffs outside of the celebrities, and frost with insider status.
Voila! Journalistic crap cake, served up every day, and for hours-long brunch on Sundays.
Hilarious! Oh but what a true history could actually be written. Obviously the blue print would start with the thesis from Manufacturing Consent - and then tell the story of the descent into the gutter.
