Wow that lady wrote the letter that I have thought about writing you a dozen times or so over the last 5-6 years. I don't think the people not currently residing in flyover territory understand how bad it really is out here. There is an established democratic party in the small town, in the reddest state, where I live...but during the last presidential election, there were no Obama signs or bumper stickers...because they would have insured your car got keyed (or worse) or your yard became a large ripped -up NASCAR like track (or worse). But, beyond the sense of feeling like a refugee in your own home town, beyond even the outright fear of physical harm (these states are rapidly becoming so saturated with open carry morons...they look more like zombie movies than small town america) is the sense of powerlessness those of us who are rational feel come election time. The fact is, we depend on you who live in large urban areas to overwhelm the mouth breathing troglodytes (our neighbors) at the polls, because the forces of good will never carry one of these states...they are too far gone. It's one thing to make fun of Ernest T. Bass when he appears on twitter...he is not so funny when he lives across the street from you.
Seriously?? "Halperin's job is to keep this a horse race"?
If Romney was up 20 points, Halperin would suck up to Romney. The media doesn't care about keeping eyes glued to the election. It doesn't care about ratings or money. Doesn't care at all. If it did, it would attempt to make its shows passable viewing. It would invite argumentative liberals for exciting fireworks. It would bring down corrupt presidencies and make a name for itself Watergate-style. It would seduce viewers not already watching Fox News.
I think the best step you could take to marginalize the batshit-insane demographic would be to reform election law so as to make your Senate ridings proportionately representative by population. Giving California the same two Senators as South Dakota is the antithesis of democracy - it's something more in keeping with a banana republic.
Waiting patiently for them to die off is nothing short of pure folly - plenty of young wingnuts are waiting in the wings to take their place, because they know the Gravy Train will always pay for another crop of photogenic political camwhores.
Trying to do my best to channel your vibes on Tumblr - http://wareq.tumblr.com/post/23787052170/fake-history-on-civil-rights http://wareq.tumblr.com/post/23786754356/my-break-with-the-extreme-right
@jim: True about the senate, but keep in mind that in the original set-up of the Federal Government, the senators more or less represented the state governments more than the people of the respective states. Senators were elected by a college of electors usually chosen by state legislatures, IIRC. The senate in general really appears to have completely outlived its usefulness, IMHO.
I've been saying "The Harold Ford dollar is a good dollar" all weekend. Just now as I closed the refrigerator door I just caught myself thinking "the Fuji apple is a good apple." I blame you DG!

You're anti-Chicago/Illinois rant reminded me of this song by the Effigies:

"Republicratic swine are banging shoulders at the trough."
