A Little Johnny Cash

To help wash Ted Nugent's sour, washed-up Bircher bile out of your head.

It always drives my Conservative friends up a wall when I remind them that Johnny Cash loved his country too dearly and had way too much class to waste his talent by strapping a flag to his dick and prancing around raving about putting a boot up everyone else's ass if they didn't fall into line.

That he sang most movingly about the very people the Right loathes and routinely kicks around for votes, ratings and just for their own, depraved amusement.

They also don't like to hear that John Wayne was just an actor

or that Marine Corps combat veteran Lee Marvin was a dope smoking Liberal who opposed the Vietnam War

but those are different stories for a different day.

For today...

"They also don't like to hear that John Wayne was just an actor...." and a service avoiding, war mongering yellow elephant as well as a few other not so nice things...and come to think of it not much of an actor.
Why wait for another day? When I think of all the real actors of that era, the ones I like and dislike, it amazes me... the correlation that becomes so evident between their politics and their acting chops. Bogart,Lee Marvin, Kirk Douglas, Gregory Peck, Spencer Tracy, Jimmy Stewart...even Gable...lefties and mostly ones who actually served in the military. John Wayne, Chuck Heston, Ronald Reagan and their ilk, horrible actors, and red chasing Birchers...who never served a day...
Like Nugent dodging the draft by not removing his pants for 3 weeks...
Not warriors...just playing them on the teevee...

'John Wayne was just an actor'.

Second-rate at that - but a first class pickled chickenhawk.

OTOH, Lee Marvin, for all his human flaws and damage, invested his archetypal characters with deep hues that stayed with the viewer long after the credits had rolled. /2cents

Am I the only leftist who does not have Conservative friends? Since one must be either a sociopath or feces-flinging ignorant to be a Conservative, it's hard for me to fathom having one of these people for a "friend" ...

Casimir,
There are a few of us fuckin' hippie liberals who don't have conservative friends. I take your point entirely about feces-flinging ignorant sociopaths. Unfortunately, many of us have family members who are conservatives. That's where my experience comes from, although if you have family members who are conservatives, they have friends and you end up being more or less polite to them. By choice I don't have any conservative friends, but in reality they get inflicted on me. I kind of take in in as if I were visiting the monkeyhouse at the zoo: Observe the antics, and realize that the beasts are really dangerous animals that are being viewed from an especially safe vantage point.

i can't have right wing friends. i can't reason with people who are willfully ignorant, and at some point they just about make me want to 'stand my ground'.

Eric, I so hear ya! I have extended family members who, fortunately, I only have to see periodically. And I, like you, consider them to be best loved as you would wild animals at the zoo, from a distance, preferably through bars. When having to have interaction with them, and Aunt Carolyn goes to take a picture and says "Smile and say Jesus", you just smile and have your picture taken, knowing that you can leave and not have to see them again for at least a year.
