I Blame Michelle

Once upon a time, a long time ago...
Me: Good morning.

Her: Did you just call me a bitch?

Me: (sigh) No. I did not just call you a bitch.

Her: Oh, so now you're calling me crazy?!

And now we're off to the races.

Seeking to explain President Obama's planet-sized cognitive blind-spot (namely, WTF is it with this otherwise very smart guy's utterly inexplicable inability to comprehend the plain, simple, direct and unambiguous Words. That. Are. Coming. Out. Of. Republican. Mouths.) I cannot help but notice that the man is very happily married to a very smart, tough-minded and accomplished woman who is clearly his equal

and with whom he is successfully raising a couple of kids in one of the most inherently stressful and high-pressure environments imaginable.

In other words, President Obama's relationship experience seems to all be concentrated in the general area of a mature, adult partnership where each party actually cares about the other, where, when you fight, you fight with the gloves on, and the idea that one of you would willingly tear the whole fucking temple down and nuke the rubble just to win an argument is almost literally inconceivable.

Which is good for him, but bad for us.

Because it means he has no conception of what it is like to be locked into a relationship with someone who wants to destroy you so badly that they are willing to hurt themselves just so they can cause you pain.

Because that's insane.

Has never walked into a room full of flying crockery because IHateYou! IHateYou! IHateYou!

I mean, how are we going to solve this
problem if you keep stabbing me in the
kidneys and throwing acid in my eyes?

Has never had a partner drive an emotional truck bomb up an important moments of his life...and then watched them detonate it with a smile...just to hurt or humiliate him.

Just to make him suffer.

Just because.

Because to someone in an adult relationship -- whose only experience of such things is a healthy marriage -- the idea that someone with whom you share a life could get so addicted to pure, blind rage and self-loathing that they would put their own well-being at risk -- put the safety of children at risk -- just to see you in pain would be...incomprehensible.

Too bad young Barack Obama never learned the hard lesson that "nice", "accommodating" and "reasonable" absolutely do not work when you find yourself involved with a psycho who wants to punish you for their own failures, set you on fire to silence the voices in their own head, and then piss on your grave to smother the shrieking goblins of their own past.

Because with the Modern Republican Party, that sure as shit is who he's shackled to now.

In a better world this would be the type of relationship our two parties would have, but alas, we do not. Obama faces a party sadistically bent on destroying him, even if it means bringing down the government in doing so. He is a man - who in a better age of politics in this country - would be the type of public servant we would have. Cool, calm, collected, reasonable, pragmatic. Admirable qualities not suited for the shootout that is in store for. It really is tragically ironic, because - to quote Cool Hand Luke - "what we have here is a failure to communicate", even though he is considered the greatest orator of our generation. Tough days are ahead.

Obama reminds me more and more of Chamberlain pre WWII.

In the immortal words of Nathan Explosion:

"It's the most brutal thing ever. If she were a gang, I'd go to war with her."

That kinda love.

Ouch...been there, before I developed my "crazy" radar or "cradar".
Got to where I could pick up on it within the first (sober) couple of encounters. A few well placed, innocuous psychological probes in a conversation. If the Joan Crawford eye slipped out, (or the doll's eyes...like Sarah) I knew I had a live one....and to run like hell.
Worked like a charm, no pycho's after 30. Also,no more stitches, or destroyed prized possessions, or police visits, or sleeping with one eye open....
If he figured that out before I did, which seems to be the case, more power to him.
Lately it occurs to me that there are an awful lot of people who can live there whole lives without achieving a base level of emotional maturity that should be expected of everyone after the age of about ...25.
...and yet they are still allowed to ...drive cars, have pets, have children, vote....run for office.

I sometimes wonder about Michelle, too. On Wednesday morning, a friend said, "What do you think Michelle said to Barack over coffee today?" and I thought she might have said something along the lines of, "You wanted this" and meant "this" in a couple of different ways.

Brilliant observation Drifty. This post really struck a personal cord with me. I can totally relate. I was a bit like your description of the president (smart and naive) until I had a very similar run-in with with a person intent upon destroying me and what I represented.

Growing up somewhat protected from really bad people, I simply hadn't been exposed to, and couldn't imagine, someone intent upon destroying me. Any disagreement could be solved with diplomacy. However, the Republicans in charge are thinking of no one but themselves. The book "People of the Lie" comes to mind here.

I may begin to see the president in a different light now.

Couldn't we just get a restraining order and move the whole government/nation into a "battered states' shelter"?

At least until the cops evict the Teabaggers from the house...

And we wonder why our young school people cannot deal effectively with schoolyard bullies. We wonder why workplace bullying is totally legal in this country. Cripes, he could at least read up on dealing with bullies or nacissistic disorders or talk to some battered women or SOMETHING!!!! OR he could, just as you say, fucking LISTEN to them! All he really needs to do is blitz a great narrative at least. feh
