This is Roman Polanski.
In his life he has done many things, one of which was drugging and raping a child, a crime for which he stands convicted but for which he has not served a day in jail.
And because he is famous (and because there is a tiny clutch of other famous people who, in an act of morally depraved class solidarity, have decided to take the position that Mr. Polanski's child raping is merely a pesky and overlookable relic of yesteryear) this is somehow news:
From CNN:
Backlash builds against support of Polanski
(CNN) -- While several high-profile actors and directors have rallied around Roman Polanski, not everyone in Hollywood believes he should be freed and forgiven.
In the face of a petition signed by notables such as Woody Allen, Martin Scorsese and John Landis calling for the immediate release of Polanski following his detainment in Switzerland, a backlash is building against such support.
"I can't believe that Hollywood has separated itself so completely from American morality," said Paul Petersen, a former child actor and president of A Minor Consideration, which advocates on behalf of young performers. "It is yet another case of Hollywood being out of sync with most of America."
Polanski pleaded guilty in 1977 to having unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor, but fled the United States before he could be sentenced.
In the years since, the director known for "Chinatown" and "Rosemary's Baby" settled in France and avoided authorities until he was arrested Saturday while on his way to the Zurich Film Festival.
In the aftermath of Polanski's arrest last weekend, a number of performers -- including Penelope Cruz, Tilda Swinton and Monica Bellucci -- appear as supporters on a petition which states, "Roman Polanski is a French citizen, a renown and international artist now facing extradition. This extradition, if it takes place, will be heavy in consequences and will take away his freedom."
Polanski's detention has stirred debate over whether he should be returned to the United States to face possible imprisonment.
...
To repeat: Roman Polanski is a child rapist. He drugged a child and then raped her, then was convicted for raping a child, then ran away and hid from his conviction as a child rapist for 30 years.
Speaking for 99.999% of all Liberals everywhere, Polanski should be in jail which will indeed "take away his freedom" and be "heavy in consequences".
Anybody who rapes children should be in jail, whether it takes the law a day to catch up with them, or 30 years. Forever would be nice, but certainly for a long, long time.
Of course, morality aside, Polanski's first mistake was not justiciable but sartorial.
If Polanski wanted to get away with raping children,
he should have dressed for the occasion.

It's fitting that Woody Allen, barely removed from child rapist himself is a backer of Roman. If I was Polansky I would tell Woody thanks, but no thanks.
And on your other crusade, The Progressive agrees and runs the numbers of shame:

Thanks for your incisive reporting!

Polanski served about 40 days in prison, while being psychologically evaluated.
One could hope that your statement about the law catching up with perps, no matter how long it would take, can be equally applied to the crimes and murders of thousands in unjust wars of the Bush administration.

And they vilified Sinead O'Connor when she ripped up a photograph on Live TV.
Did they really misspell "renowned" on the petition?
Let's not exaggerate. He didn't rape a child. He raped a sexually active adolescent. And that is what he should spend a few years in prison for.
Yes, I realize there is not much difference.
