Many Thanks

So yesterday/today was/is the my fourth anniversary of my first test-post and first true-post respectively.

Four years of endless kindnesses. Camaraderie. Pie fights. Tantrums.

Four years of me not saying "thank you" nearly often enough. Longer than I was in high school, and with better attendance. Long enough to see YouTube come into being, grow like kudzu, get sold for a mint, and then start its inevitable decline into usage violation and bad emo "fan tribute" video suckage purgatory.

Many thanks to the inimitable Blue Gal for her wonderful video, the kind thoughts of her co-conspirators, and all of the well-wishing coming in from Shakesville, the GNB, Crooks & Liars, Fighting Liberals and many others.

After all this time and nearly 2,000 posts, I still hold out hope that I will one day grow into my clown shoes. Either that, or get pirate-rich doing blog aggregation selling Collateralized Bloggage Instruments to 3rd-generation, trustifarian Weebles with more dollars than sense.

Either way, it has been a fine ride so far.

And so what will the next year hold?

Well when you take the vastly entertaining antics of our local elected officials from Chairman Mare and his pet aldermen on down...

And you add in the fact that:
A) While Chicago now bestrides the political universe,

B) Chicago also seems mysteriously bereft of local writers who know how to laugh while they swing the editorial axe.
let's just say I'm thinking hard about adding some local, insider content to the mix.

And finally, for those who are curious about how I scored this sweet, sweet gig, it turns out,

someone filmed the whole transaction.

With sincerest thanks and gratitude.

I'll have what he's having.

And nothing but raw admiration and gratitude for all the vivid moments you make real through writing for all of us.

. . .Now if you could just force Blogger Buster to fix your comments section before my patience runs out and I have to unleash my fury.

Happy Belated Blogaversary....

I'm just a little shrimp blogger(krill to some) amongst you bigger jumbo shrimps so this is just a note, belated as it may be, but none the less disingenious to the Blogger of Year 2008. Congratualtions!

What else can you say?

Blue Gal is a great link.

Happy Anniversary DG,

I continue to respect your insight into the tentacles of the entrenched and savage 30-year escalation of the conservative pig people's class war on America. That, and the Bobo chronicles remain a classic for all times - I still go back and read them occasionally.

Man I wish I was reading you the first three. What did I miss?

Four years, huh? Why, I remember reading that Driftglass feller over at the News Blog, when he was just knee-high to a grasshopper.

(Ok, it would have to have been a giant, mutated grasshopper like the ones that almost ate Chicago in Bert I. Gordon's apocalyptic masterpiece The Beginning of the End. But you catch my ... drift.)

Many happy returns of the day, mon frère.

Dude, you kick ass! And even those of us who live in real cities--not that shithole near Wisconsin--will probably tolerate some inside dope on that shithole!

Again, congrats.

Clearly, I don't watch enough Sesame Street anymore.

It's funny, but I think I found the News Blog through you and not vice versa. I don't actually remember when I first darkened your door, but it has been a while.

Many returns, d.

astonishing stuff, always.

your take is one i carry from the darkest days forward.

we outlasted (most of) the looting of our national treasure and the sacking of our character. and you, first among legions, know that the viperous hessians of the right will never stop their campaigns, so we must never stop ours.

keep calling them out, drifty.

Congrats, Driftglass.

And speaking of Gilliard's place, and I may have mentioned this before, but when I heard you were setting up your own establishment--as pleased as I was--there was a selfish little part of me that was concerned you wouldn't hang around the Big Guy's place as much. I was worried that I would miss all of those dry, wry comments and posts.

Also, there was no one who could fillet the trolls like you. It was a joy to watch you cut up Bloomie, for example. Not with fury, just in a calm, dispassionate, Zatoichi-like way. "Hmm, can I best my record and remove all his bones with fewer moves and faster than I did last week...Yes.... I think so....here's a new technique I want to try...

Luckily, you stuck around and did both.

Here's to ya', Drifty.

Just keep playin' that Rock & Roll, Big Fella, and all will be well.

By the way, as regards your Point B, ("Chicago also seems mysteriously bereft of local writers who know how to laugh while they swing the editorial axe...") you're absolutely dead on the money. I may never stop missing Royko...

Congratulations, Drifty. Here's to four more. May they be just as entertaining as the last four, (if not so painful). Úna

Happy Blogiversary Drifty! I hope you know how I feel about what you do! You are excellent and I do think that you should be writing books as well; heaven knows youve got good fodder up there to keep you busy forever! It reads like the Sopranos.
Thanks for the support for the little RIPCoco and the bigger Brilliant at Breakfast, and keep up the good work...you really are the best!
