Edwards to quit presidential race
By NEDRA PICKLER, Associated Press Writer 1 minute ago
DENVER - Democrat John Edwards is exiting the presidential race Wednesday, ending a scrappy underdog bid in which he steered his rivals toward progressive ideals while grappling with family hardship that roused voters' sympathies, The Associated Press has learned.
The two-time White House candidate notified a close circle of senior advisers that he planned to make the announcement at a 1 p.m. EST event in New Orleans that had been billed as a speech on poverty, according to two aides. The decision came after Edwards lost the four states to hold nominating contests so far to rivals who stole the spotlight from the beginning — Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama.
The former North Carolina senator will not immediately endorse either candidate in what is now a two-person race for the Democratic nomination, said one adviser, who spoke on condition of anonymity in advance of the announcement.
Edwards waged a spirited top-tier campaign against the two better-funded rivals, even as he dealt with the stunning blow of his wife's recurring cancer diagnosis. In a dramatic news conference last March, the couple announced that the breast cancer that she thought she had beaten had returned, but they would continue the campaign.
Their decision sparked a debate about family duty and public service. But Elizabeth Edwards remained a forceful advocate for her husband, and she was often surrounded at campaign events by well-wishers and emotional survivors cheering her on.
Edwards planned to announce his campaign was ending with his wife and three children at his side. Then he planned to work with Habitat for Humanity at the volunteer-fueled rebuilding project Musicians' Village, the adviser said.
...
If true -- and it certainly sounds like it -- that's a shame.
A real shame.

Ouch.
I LIKE John Edwards. I've supported him faithfully and I've sent him a hundred bucks, in $20 increments, and I am heartsick that his chance to be president is over, at least for this election.
BUT! For me, his running was always going to be a win-win situation. I think that he bailed for two reasons:
His campaign never caught on, party due to the fact that Obama and Clinton did an excellent job of "drafting" him, and of co-opting some of his best issues...dammit...
But mainly because he knows (I hope and pray) that by dropping out before Super Tuesday, he has a wonderful opportunity (along with Al Gore) to help ensure that the republican party will be reduced to a rump group for the next 8 years. Because that's what's going to happen if he, and then Gore, will endorse Obama.
I think John has been taking more votes from Obama than he's been taking from Hillary, and I think he's copped a good look at the democratic party's chances with Barack, and at their chances with Hillary, and I think he's about to give those votes back to Obama, with interest. :o)
It is simple, guys: The GOP has to have Hillary to run against, to have any chance of winning this contest. As soon as we send her back to the Senate, we'll be able to watch the inner rot of the gooper zombies accelerate to warp speed, as the flesh drops from their bloody jowls like some creature-feature flick.
If we put "paid" to Hillary's run, there aint gone be no "snatching defeat from victory" by a democrat, for the base to enjoy, this year. :o)
Dump Hillary from the race, and we can sit back to watch Obama in the first debate, asking John McCain if he thinks that another 100 years of the clusterfuck will really be enough? :o)
I look forward to lots of airtime for that photo of McCain getting a big, juicy, new-age-guy hug, from junior. :o)
Anyone think Hillary can or will, speak or endorse those things? Or go after McCain with hammer and tongs, to tear gobbets of political flesh from his uber-warpimp ass?
I thought not. :o)
Barack Obama is an EXCITING politician. When he talks about "change", it fires ME up, and I've been listening to the political shit being slathered for nearly 5 decades. Nominate Obama, and we are going to have the damndest "choice, not an echo" that we've seen since Kennedy v. Nixon. Maybe, since Lincoln v. McClellan.
Boys and girls, I tells ya, we got the chance to turn this thing around, big time. But it won't get turned an inch if we're just plain brickdumb enough to put up Hillary. (and Bill)
I'm thinking and hoping that, as we speak, here chez Driftglass, John Edwards and Al Gore are teleconferencing about how to maximize John's and Al's endorsement of Barack.
Guys! For the party and the country; DO IT!!! :o)
We The People have lost our Champion.
The fucking media owners got skeered.
Corporate America got skeered.
The Pig People got skeered.
For anyone with two firing synapses in their brain, that should have been a flashing neon sign that this guy was what we are looking for.
I also regret that Edwards is dropping out. I thought he was the best choice because of his backround as a plaintiff's attorney. I think our biggest need is to have someone who will face down the power of big corporate money in corrupting the government.
I agree wholeheartedly with tanbark--Hillary will be a disaster. She is the only candidate who can unite the Pig People.
If we can't have Edwards as president, how about Attorney General? That might be even better.
Selah.
CAGary
Selah! As someone on FDL posted:
"Wouldn't we love to see Edwards as A.G., and going after Cheyney and Bush and the wiretappers and waterboarders?"
:o)
I, too, liked Edwards's positions and his approach. I voted for him in '04 in the by-then-pointless California primary. I'm real interested to hear what you all think about his public financing decision. That was a deal-breaker for me this time around, as I couldn't vote for a candidate who would have been hobbled until the convention (even though I'm pro public financing generally-everyone has to do it or the one who doesn't has a huge advantage-kind of a prisoner's dilemma situation).
Edwards may be leaving the race, but he is well positioned to play another role. VP or AG would allow him to remove some of the rot that has crept into DC in recent years.
On topic "Edwards" but somewhat off topic for How It's Done per Fire Dog Lake --
Well, well, well. I've just "been served" by someone at Fire Dog Lake; I addressed my email to Jane Hamsher.
Some posters around these Driftglass parts (tanbark? busted knuckles?) may be interested in knowing that your absence from FDL is noted and possibly cheered. And, if you were called a sexist or racist by Fire Dog Lake commenters because you did not Snap to Grid behind Heir Apparently Hillary or Kumbayah Obama-rama, that could ONLY BE because you ARE sexist or racist. No other reason.
The responder who was Jane Hamsher -- or someone who only plays Jane on teevee -- hoped the message gets out to the blogosphere. Here you go:
REPLY TO MY EMAIL:
Jane: Has FDL Gone to Embers On Purpose?
I think you may need to take a closer look. Emptywheel has her own blog on FDL, Pach has said many times that he's devoting his time to the business side (he's actually probably quadrupled the time he spends on FDL), people have been saying "Fitz" (and others complaining about it) ever since we opened our doors and we let people say whatever they want, and lobby for their candidates in the comments as long as they do so respectfully.
And yes, we do kick people off for making sexist and racist comments. I'm quite proud of it and I hope people trumpet that all over the blogosphere, thanks for letting me know. Good riddance to them.
MY EMAIL TO JANE AT FDL:
Dear Jane Hamsher,
I first found FireDogLake through a link in 2005 during my Nationally-shared Doldrums -- Patrick Fitzgerald, Valerie Plame v. Scooter Libby, the Joe LIEberman Chronicles, plus in-yer-face straight talk.
FDL was always a touchstone of sanity and intelligent snark.
Recently, I picked my head up from a 6-week work-related deadline hell spent online 24/7 but off my beloved blogs. And, shazaaam! FDL ain't the original Cheers bar on Hampshire Street in Boston anymore. The one where everybody knows your name? And, more importantly, they and you are always glad you came.
Out in Front: Fire Dog Lake is your creation and your beautiful baby. I am not arguing that you can't say or do in the lake or with the lake anything you damned well please.
I'm just trying to figure out if the flame smothering and the purge of stalwart regulars at the Lake was a deliberate move. And if there is a Cleaned-Up-for-Prime-Time explanation you're giving for what FDL is now.
Here are bits of what I've smelled in The New FDL Regime --
1. All the truly good masthead writers, moderators and regular commenters are gone or pushed to sidebar links: TRex, emptywheel, Norske Flame Thrower, the occasional Eli or more regular Pachacutec. Plus a passle of what used to be thoughtful, regular FDL commenters. No more. MIA.
What happened? Opinions too strongly stated? Too lefty? Occasional naughty words?
2. I re-entered from my work and deadlines hiatus at the same time TBogg - whom I've always read as a simpatico Good Human voice -- found a home on FDL's servers.
Whew. Comments from TBogg's stalwarts on having to register, sign in and mind their P's and Q's at The Lake were revealing: (a) Approximately 72 percent pissing, moaning, whining over ANY change in their cyber lifestyle; but (b) 28 percent valid comments (me thought) on the frothy bits of FDL ... like that Fitz! and Zed and Me First stuff that goes on at the start of every thread; and dismissive comments on the personal, My Space fluffer-nutter chatter that often passes for "Commentary" at The Lake.
Ok. Chaque 'un a son gout.
3. Primary Season Madness has obviously polluted The Lake.
It's not simply a few partisans who obviously tip to one Democratic presidential candidate or another. It's more like the chem-toxins that quietly dripped into Fire Dog Lake have spawned Rabid Mad Dogs. There's Rabid Dog Alpha (Hillary Clinton is Nominee Heir Apparent and Don't You Farking Forget It) and Rabid Dog Beta (Barack Obama will save us all with Kumbayah and you STFU on ANYTHING questioning, validated Oppo Research or cite-supported "discouraging words" on their boy 'Bama).
The Edwards and "Other" nominee supporters on FDL comment threads have figured out that raising troublesome facts or documented details with either variant of FDL Rabid Dog is exactly like doing the BiPartisan, Can't We All Just Get Along?, Jitterbug with NeoCon Republicans. They simply do not hear you.
If Primary Season Madness and Pollution of Fire Dog Lake ended there, I'd say: Suck it up, FDL visitor. Toughen your skin and state your position. Don't go drooling and whining over disagreements ... no matter how testy they get ... lest you qualify for the Onion Skin Weenie Award.
But these Rabid Dog FDLers have been allowed to either (a) hijack the comments with their endless, repetitive and TOTALLY OFF-MESSAGE comments, or (b) the Mad Dogs have become moderators. (Mon Dieu!! How the hell did that happen?)
As for the (a) Mad Dog strategy, above, of endlessly repeating the same non-reply reply trash talk, I've noticed several of these FDL Rabid Dogs are trying to fly stealth. They protest up front that they really really want to see Edwards get the nomination OR Edwards is their guy, but (INSERT same old drool they've restated 4 times before, none of which addresses a single farking point raised by other commenters). Same Old Shit from these FDL Mad Dogs; endless deja vu vu vu.
4. The Fire Dog Lake Implosion has been noted elsewhere.
I've been to other liberal blog sites recently in which an FDL Refugee will pop up. They were accused of sexism at The Lake if they said nary a discouraging word about Hillary Clinton's smudgey checkered past. They were accused of racism if they did not LEFT-RIGHT-HUP-TWO fall into line and march their jackboots behind the Kumbayah Obama True Believers at Fire Dog Lake.
One such refugee noted that while you, Jane Hamsher, were smart and funny and courageous, you were having a helluva time filtering ideologues and fascisti out of The Lake. That you held a preferences poll among FDL users; and the results had Edwards blowing Clinton and Obama outta the water. (Not surprising for polling an allegedly progressive blog site, huh?)
ERGO: Why have the Mad Dog Hillary-ites and the Rabid Obama-Kumbayama Types been allowed to hijack nearly every FDL comment thread?
Why can't whoever is "in charge" at FDL notice the ruse of stating "I'm for Edwards" at the start of one of those Mad Dog posts, which then drizzles on into repeating the same anti-Edwards arguments ... and the same pro-Bama pep cheers ... as they've stated ad nauseum in their previous three comments. Regardless of what ANY responding commenters have asked them?
It cannot be that hard to connect the behavioral dots at FDL. I have twice; and both times I was Moderator Deleted for it. Check repeated patterns with "cinammonape" - a likely Political Troll dressed in whiney, paranoid clothing when anyone calls him/her on the ape shit.
And, as of 2:30 AM EDT last night (January 29) in a totally useless, going to Nadaville exchange by an apparent Mod at Fire Dog Lake, I no longer trust the posts of "newtonusr."
I pasted in below the pointless exchange with "newtonuser"; it's from your post, Jane, of your interview with Russ Feingold. I know you're busy and I'm certain you're outta town. So I do not know if you are aware that the overwhelming majority of comments to your Feingold interview consisted of: Yeah Jane; Go Jane Go ... Russ Feingold is cute and I wanna date him ... discussion of what to do with a kitty cat in heat.
I thought I'd stumbled into the social media site for Tiger Beat or Buzz for Tween-agers or Feline Peri-Menopause--Don't Let It Happen To Pusskins. Go figure.
I'm also beginning to suspect that "newtonusr" and "cinnamonape" are, if not the same person, then twins joined at the ass bone. Both live in the Bay State somewhere. Both do the same diversionary stealth bullshit -- I'm for Edwards but but but ... -- and both are consistent Mad Dogs on never answering any replies to them. They just repeat their same pre-set Troll Memes, no matter what.
Given the time of day -- early a.m. Eastern -- I also think someone gave the FDL Moderator keys to "newtonusr" aka: cinnamonape. Eeeesh.
Again, this is your playground and your marbles, Jane. You can close 'em up and pick 'em up and take 'em home any time you like. But, can you tell me after all the above what has happened to Fire Dog Lake?? The inmates have taken over the FDL asylum; and, even then, it was long after the Better Crazies already escaped.
What's up?
Maybe I don't spend enough (OK, any) time at Firedoglake, but that was just confusing.
What's up? Is that you need to identify yourself or you're just a troll as well. How stupid do you think people are?
On Edwards: I'm devastated about John Edwards. I will, of course go for Obama now. No choices. The corporate campaigns have shut down the most progressive candidate.
I'm unclear as to why more progressives didn't back him? I did. I fought hard for him. I donated $300, what I could afford. I wrote letters and made phone calls. I tried. MSM has won.
John Edwards fought the good fight and now we have one person who I think was moved by John Edwards FIGHT and backbone. I can only hope Senator Obama incorporates this more fully and gets his FIGHT on for the good of our country.
What we know for certain is the hope of government actually governing and doing business differently, was shut down today.
:-(.................
Selah - Yes, I agree too!
Attorney General at least. Obama/Edwards bettah :-)

Hmmm. I wasn't counting on "stupid." I was counting on other postings I've seen here, and at other sites, by people not happy with the FDL comments hijack by True Believers and Nanny Moderators. Stupid? No. Clued In? Yes.
And no I'm not a troll. But I guess that all depends on your POV.
Sorry to bother you.
Shaking my head here.
First, I guess, is this really isn't the place to be airing out yer gripes about Firedoglake.Hijacking Drifty's comment thread to complain about FDL is kinda bad form, ya know?
Second. If Jane or anyone else has any problems with me, my comments or attitude, they know how to get in touch with me.
Thanks for your concern.

Point taken and good point. I apologize. I was pissed.
If Edwards is still on my ballot when my primary comes around, I will vote for him to remind the two remaining candidates that they need to stand up for us working stiffs.
I half-agree with Tanbark, in that I agree with him that HRC, if nominated, will have a hard row to hoe. However, he, and Obama's other fans, fail to realize that Obama will also have it tough.
1] The Corporate Holodeck Media will carry water for the Elephascists, as usual.
2] The Elephascists have proven to be masters of voter suppression and vote fraud.
3] Don't forget the "Bradley Effect". Many white folks are more bigoted against non-white folks than they are willing to admit. In the privacy of the voting booth, their true, degenerate, reactionary feelings come out.
4] In predominantly white voting districts, Diebold and friends could switch GENUINE Obama votes over to the Elephascist candidate and then BLAME the Bradley Effect.
All of that, of course, assumes that Obama hasn't already sold his soul to the Corporate Plutocracy [or as I have taken to calling it, "The Cancer"], just like HRC the ex-Republican. [The main reason most DLC-type Democrats ARE Democrats is that crazy people took over the GOP.]
If he has sold his soul, he would still pursue more sensible policies than an Elephascist, as the DLC speaks for the less insane wing of The Cancer.
If Obama has not sold his soul and it looks like he's going to win, he'll have a fatal encounter with a "lone racist nut" who will then be "shot trying to escape", or maybe The Cancer will choose the "tragic crash of a light plane" scenario this time. [Although picking Edwards, whom The Cancer fears, as his running mate might defuse that possibility.]
I begin to wonder if we weren't better off with the fabled "smoke-filled rooms". Then we might have a chance of getting Gore.
anony - we all have email. It would be helpful to know who you are. No one is completely happy with any one site..... 'cept for Drifty of course (muuuwaaaa ;-) )
so that's why people start blogs of their own. I think creating an identity out here in the great blogateria might be a thought for you going forward. Sorry to sound so mean. Let us know when you get your blog going and/or an identity. :-)
Sorry, drifty *blush*

According to my Election Inspector Certification Training last October, primary voters should be able to write in their candidate of choice on inspector-certified paper rolls. The voting machine (old lever machines; not the Diebold touch screen horrors) are manually set for each voter by party registration.
Thus, a Democrat's write-in for Rudy Giuliani would be disqualified; but a Democrat's write-in for John Edwards (assuming he does not appear on the activated lever voting row) would be tallied at the end of voting. By bipartisan watchers. And folded into total vote counts hand delivered to County Board of Elections.
This, by the way, is write-in procedure in a county in New York State. Former prison inmates are NOT legally disqualified here as in other states -- like Florida? -- and a prison conviction whose term was fulfilled can not even be used as a Voter Challenge.
So, I don't know how write-ins work in other states or with the decertified and ever-tamperable touchscreen vote machine.
Me? I'm writing in Edwards on SuperTuesday. (That should go over well in NYS where Hillary Clinton is junior senator. :-O) But the November general election day is still a loooong ways away. So I don't know who I'll vote for in November ... as long as it's not a Republican. snort.
This is the second presidential primary in a row in which I'll have cast my absentee ballot for someone whose dropped out of the race before California's Election Day.
The first time was for Howard Dean.
The second time was for John Edwards.
I have no regrets.
I know one "black american"; a rather large one, with a heart and intellect to boot, who's quaffing a beer, and digging the shit out of what's going on here. :o) :o) :o)
One group hug; (No switchblades!) and then everybody back in their foxholes? :o)
IBW - dang I wish you stop with that shit about Obama and the ....... untimely end. Just stop it!! More fear fear shit. I'm all full up on the fear fear shit. Feel the fear, and do it anyway. Enough.
And, simple math says - a vote for anyone other than Obama is a vote FOR hillary. Bottom line. Your vote, your choice.... but really. Hillary has the most delegates right now and I'm sure they both want Edwards' 62.... which I think he plans on keeping until the carnival of the capitulationists..... which is why he said "suspend".
I love alot of your good stuff all around but really all this fear shit is just over the line. Try to break free from that shit. Obama is willing to so should we. It almost sounds like you want hillary to win and suck george bush's dick!
Oh and had your boy Gore had ONE cajone, we would have NEVER had the nightmare we have now. Get real.
GORE didn't fight, he capitulated our country away. Bottom line.
I second that about talking about the candidates being killed.
Most of us have lived through political assassinations, and they're horrible. In addition to the personal tragedy, the cultural and political atmosphere is just...polluted...with the insanity of it.
I grant, they are always a possibility, but I think it's macabre to dwell on them, especially on a blogsite.
I am humbled yet again by the generous and humane husbandry this small site gets from most of its readers and commenters.
Thank you.
OK. 'Bye.
Anon posted wierd stuff about FDL on Drifty's site.
I pretty much have had the same experiences on FDL lately, at least in WATCHING it go down. I've not been 'victimized', but RBG is a pain in the ass. *G*
I miss TRex but he's got his own place.
There sure is a lot of latte lite talk where FDL WAS to me, a hard hitting nose crushing progressive voice. Now? Not so much.
If Drifty ain't bustin Anon's chops about it, hey, that's the message from Drifty.
The issue of possible assassinations of political candidates is one, as Tan posts, that we've all grown up with (boomers).
And yes, JFK, MLK, and Bobby hurt. Still do. N a few plane crashes are suspect.
And we all know, deep inside our guts from what we've read non mainstream media, and from FOI releases our own country has always had the potential, desire and reason to conduct incredibly ugly blackened covert ops against its own citizens.
That's a fact of life, too.
So I'm not offended by such talk.
But it's also true we are spied on and all our progressive and dissenting names, thoughts and posts and blogs have been data mined, and are in a file somewhere, maybe next to SDS, Panthers, Weathermen, Union Organizers, John Lennon and other files of the past.
So, under NEW laws, such talk of political assassinations is likely to focus a TIGHT LIGHT on the commenter of same. And under new laws, it's treason, and you can be disappeared in a heartbeat for just MENTIONING it.
But talk of the past, and the past is a great predictor of the future potential, does not offend me.
Buy the ticket, take the ride, pay the price. We're all adults. And I wish all of you the best of luck.
Drifty, you run a damned fine open door saloon. I respect that.
Set me up again, 3 fingers of Old No. 7 with a Guiness warm pint on the backside. N yea, I'll have another polish, with kraut and dark mustard, too. *G*
Now shut up n deal, someone. *G*

N yeah, I'm saddened and ashamed of the MSM, blogs, and the whole stinking system that Edwards and Kuch dropped out. They were co-opted from the get go, and we all know it.
Here's hoping one or both of them arise with our next admin, but, I'm not sure it matters anymore.
The Signing Statements, the Executive And Unitary Presidency, and the emergence as of the SOTU Monday Night of the United Corporate States Of AmeriKa as pretty much unveiled by BoyKing ensures all Presidents and sub servients will report directly to the Board Of Directors of the United Corporate States.
Game over. For now, we save ourselves, and if you have family younger than you, best make plans to adapt to the present and future which is here. We The People are no longer the primary interest of this nations leaders.
Tanbark is on the same page as Chris Matthews and Maureen Dowd - for now. If Obama wins, won't he be surprised when their narrative changes.
CMike; not so much. :o)
I haven't heard Tweety and Modo complaining that Hillary has had her head up george bush's ass for the better part of five years.
:o) :o) :o)
Of course, I MAY have missed it, since I'm not a big fan of those two.
But if they have (And Modo, at least, HAS gotten off some excellent rips of Clinton) then I have no problem with that particular analysis of our triangulatin' gal. :o)
ok, totally off topic, but..

Say what?
I think you've been drinking the Clinton koolaid too long.
You know, the leftover shit that she bought from george bush to feed you guys. :o)
But tell us, Mike, in the general, when McCain starts pimping "surge accomplished" are YOU going to stand up to applaud him, the way Hillary did? Inquiring minds want to know. :o) :o) :o)
That is, of course, the way Hillary did...Bush. :o)
Enjoy. (o:
Well, sheeee-ite. I said it once before. Bar keep? Three free rounds of boiler makers for all the stevedores here.

THIS is how America looks, walks, talks and farts. And, so far, Driftglass is letting us live. Thank you. More trafficked sites -- like FireDogLake (sorry to be so pyscho fixated) took a different Nanny Moderator or Let It Go Tiger Beat BS path.
Thanx, Driftie. Give us a heads up when we need to get the eff out of your digs and go home. So you can clean up the broken Lone Star bottles and butts in the potted ferns.
I skimmed CMike's linked article.
I can quit worrying about Obama's safety. He serves the plutocracy, just like HRC, and Bill C. before her. Hence, the plutocracy will see tp it that he suffers no harm.
I wonder if any, or all three of them, started out as actual liberals, and were taken aside and informed what could happen to them. If that were the case, I would not blame any of them, because I would not choose martyrdom, either, were I in that position.
Even so, I will vote for Obama or HRC in November, whichever is nominated. At least they represent the sane wing of the plutocracy, whereas between the Gingrich Congress and the Chimperial Presidency, we have been misruled by the insane wing of the plutocracy for some 14 years now.
