My Commenters Are Smarter Than Me: Freudian Edition
At Tapped, Davis X Machina replies to my concern that some liberals have a serene confidence that Giuliani will self-destruct, saying:Assume arguendo, that for every turned-off fundie who looks at Giuliani and stays home, a fear-addict, or authority-worshiper, or closet racist, who couldn't otherwise bring him or herself to vote for a southern, Talibornagain Republican comes off the bench.
Are we sure the former outnumber the latter? Is the superego vote really bigger than the id vote?
In American politics, I always bet on the id.
That sums it up nice and tight, because when it comes right down to it, this is what it comes right down to: are the Armies of Light more activated, numerous and properly distributed to drag this country in the general direction of greater freedom, autonomy and community than the Bad Guys who want to suck us all down into their cesspit of inner darkness and fear?
Over the short term, it's a butt-ugly horse race, where to win, the Bad Guys have no compunction about going to the whip, the spur, the Terror Taser, or Jebus Fucking Christ with frickin' laser beams attached to His stigmata.
Over the long term, I have no doubt as to the outcome because, in the end, Reality will always be the mechanical bunny their fucked-up Ayn Rand/James Dobson love-child dogma can never catch.
Or, as Richard Feynman put it:
“It doesn't matter how beautiful your theory is, it doesn't matter how smart you are. If it doesn't agree with experiment, it's wrong”
And over any substantial distance of ground, Stoopid simply cannot outrun Wrong.

However, that does little good for us poor schmucks who have to deal NOW with the short-term results of Teh Stoopid.
"And over any substantial distance of ground, Stoopid simply cannot outrun Wrong."
No doubt. The questioney is, How much ground we got, before we plummet over the fucking cliff?
Feynman quote reminds me of that one
tv debate scene in the film "the yes men" where the argument goes along the lines of
Yes, but you are too grounded in the facts to see the beauty of the theory...
Great movie! One of the best SF movies ever made and yes....
That includes Star Wars.
Yeah, Forbidden Planet smokes Star Wars, and pretty much everything else.
My God, it's full of ideas. Not to mention resonances with Shakespeare and Greek myth.
And an electronic music soundtrack that was easily a decade ahead of its time.
I Know exactly what you mean with the whole, "Hoping the Dem candidate runs against Roody"-Fantasy, AND what a nightmare, if it happened, it could release on this oh-so currently fucked up and fragile nation we call home. I guess that how it's couched in your post, the dem's are trying to lead with their super-ego. The Id wins, every time.
Never so poignant or as eloquent as yourself or D.X.M. the other day I tried to warn others at Digby's on much the same vein:
"So many, "What if's?", so little time.
What if... Giuliani does get the nod from the R's?
Then?
What if... Either one of two things happen:
1) The election is a sham, like in 2000, and Rudy, 'wins'.
2) The D's fuck up again and Rudy wins, legitimately.
Either way we're really and truly fucked. So, NO, get it? NO!!! No Rudy on the ballot because in that rotisserie league section of the brain there seems to be a few who like the idea of kicking this dopes ass because you think it'll be a cakewalk for any of the Dem's out there to easily defeat that Rudy feller. Because he's, "Icky". And nobody likes him.
Get that bullshit out of your fuckin' heads, one and all. He didn't self-destruct as Mayor nor before that as a US Att'y and he isn't going to do it now, either. You wouldn't believe the people that the RNC has baby-sitting him. Even with all his fuck-ups, he's still a politically viable candidate even with 13,000+ of my brother firemen that'd love to plant a Halligan Tool deep in his fuckin' head. Yet, still, he prospers... Think about why that is...
Yeah, I'm a Noo Yawkah, too. Digby's right we don't take prisoners. We also know what that bastid did to NYC. And I hope he never gets the chance to do it to the rest of America 'cause it'd be the icing on the cake after the Dumbayah gang fucked everything up so well.

A robot that spits out booze on demand, so I can stay fucked up and not think about Rudy and Hillary lecturing me on morality.
What a world.

Somebody said this would be easy? :-)
PhysioProf,
That's why they call it a horse race. But we keep running because the alternative is the end of the possibility of hope.

Ahhh.
L.S./M.F.T,
As with everything else, we do the best we can with the tools we have and hope it turns out OK.
It may be true that "No matter how beautiful your theory is...if it doesn't agree with experiment, it's wrong", but it helps to have the Right Wing Noise Machine putting its thumb on the scale.
Perfect way to bring in a Forbidden Planet reference; sheer genius.
As for Feynman's quote, since basically 0% of the public knows the difference between theory, experiment and prayer, the Right Wing Noise Machine is just "icing on the cake."
