Like you, I’ve heard Wingnut homunculi all over the visible and audible spectrum making the Enron Defense of the Pope. And the “leave the poor Vatican alone” defense. And the “have a little fucking respect” defense.

The fucking Enron defense! Ooooh. Poor Kenny-boy didn’t know. He was betrayed – betrayed I tells’ ya! – by the evil number’s guys that he, um, hired…and vetted…and was responsible for…and who reported to him and who made him Crazy Rich.

But somehow it’s just plain nutty – and possibly un-American -- to suggest that he might take some crumb of responsibility. To own up and pay back. I’m sure he’s curled up right now in one of his Platinum hot-tubs, inside one of his hundred, solid-gold McMansions, huddled under a pile of ermine hand-towels, sipping million-year-old Scotch and just a-cryin’ and a-cryin’ over the pity of it all.

Where is your “Ownership Society” now asshats? Where is your bootstrapping righteousness when it comes to holding orcs like, oh, Tom DeLay responsible for his foaming lunacy? Where is the outrage over Kenny-boy’s puling excuses? Where’s all the bold talk about the how unfair the ACLU is, how two-bit dealers don’t serve full, hard-time because of clever legal “technicalities”...while child rapists frolic in the Vatican Gardens, and those that aid and abet them are feted and honored as Princes of the Church?

Still, there is something so fucking…surreal…hearing Conservatives who make great sport sniping from the safety of a penthouse suite at single mothers, welfare recipients and the poor generally for not “taking responsibility” for their own actions, gibber on about looking the other way when it comes to taking even a little, teeny bit of ownership for the 1,000 Mile High Monsters that stalk and fund and rule their own fucking party.

Yeah Boy, there is some fer-sure, Happy-Fun Rightwing Carpetbombing of the powerless and fragile by the knuckledraggers when the targets can’t fight back, eh? And let’s not forget how VERY profitable this species cowardice it is too. Shit, without weak and voiceless victims to flog, how’s Rush gonna pay for his Hillbilly Heroin? How’s Bill Bennett gonna finance his poker jones and his sticky visits to Spankytown?

Enron is bad, but the pretending that Child Rape was not part-and-parcel of this Papacy, or that it’s “bad form” to mention it, when everyone on the Left apparently lives in a Wingnut free-fire-zone 24/7, is asinine. The blades came out on Paul Wellstone before the body was cold…and Wellstone didn’t make defending Child Rapists part of his Top Ten Lifetime To-Do List.

Enron is bad, but this is worse. Markets being the amoral engines that they are, corporations will run cancerously wild if left entirely to their own devices: this is why we used to have a little something called Government Oversight in ‘Murika. Before it was privatized and outsourced to Bangalor. So when the #1 Lifetime Contributor to George “Personal Responsibility” Bush was shown to be a liar and a thief – a looter of old lady’s pension checks and children’s college funds – well I couldn’t honestly say I was shocked.

But when you are the Catholic Church and your entire stock-in-trade is fealty to the rule of hierarchy, Absolute Moral Authority, and Infallibility…simpering behind “I didn’t know” when your Church used the full weight of that Authority to protect child rapists, keep them stocked with fresh victims, and then extort and bribe the witnesses into silence when you were caught would be laughable if it weren’t so deeply, profoundly sick.

So how about y’all drain DeLay, Frist, Santorium, Terry, Falwell, Robertson, Dobson and the rest of the Okefenokee Pus Swamp smack dab in the middle of your own party, and then come back and offer the rest of us graduate classes in moral rectitude, OK?
