Don’t over-simplify the 60s. The rise and castration of the youth voice began with the Cuban missile crisis, shook with JFK, escalated via Viet Nam , the Draft, and Civil Rights, then went apeshit in 1968; MLK, RFK, Chicago DNC and ended with Nixon. Throughout the draft years, college enrollments and the number of qualifying “colleges” grew exponentially; changing everything . The womens’ movement rose up as part of the counter-culture. Woodstock and music fed and sustained the movement messaging , while mainstream “culture” rolled merrily along. The world was still being run by the old guard,
For a while dissatisfaction had simmered, boiling over here and there; put down with varying degrees of oppression, ridicule and violence. (not unlike today) Any excesses were overblown and any traction was downplayed or dismissed using “those crazy kids, ya know?”
Ending the draft was an effective pressure relief valve, at least for suburban middle-class young males and their families. Keeping turmoil, unrest, contempt and dissatisfaction tamped down became manageable for the time being.
Then media found ways to co-opt and placate the potential vanguard while pushing the counter to the fringes. Lots of tiny tweaks lubed the masses up for their ride...
