April 24, 2025

Today’s episode is going to be a little more unstructured than usual because we have a very special guest.  He is a renowned political journalist and staff writer for Esquire, where he writes the popular blog "Politics with Charles P. Pierce." He's known for his sharp political commentary, incisive humor, and encyclopedic knowledge of American politics and history. He previously wrote for outlets including The Boston Globe, Grantland, and Sports Illustrated.  He is also the author of "Idiot America," an indispensable book on American politics and culture.

Great bunch of talking from the two guys that have always been my first two (bookmarked) daily reads.

It is somehow reassuring that there are other sane, reasonably smart folk left.

Thanks for the fun - and BTW, I thought I knew Star Trek, but have learned a bit more now.

Great pod! (So far, admittedly, but I'm betting the trend will continue.)

A question: at one point, you all agreed that after Trump, the MAGA GOP will fall apart, because there is no one that can step into his shoes. A little later, you all agreed that Trump didn't come up with anything new, that the base "willed him into existence," I think one of you said.

This seems a little contradictory. If Trump was/is just tapping into the main vein of the GOP base, then why can't someone else do the same thing?

I hope not, and I usually think that the GOP won't be able to replace him, but I do have my dark nights of soul, too. So, that's my question.

Every other week or so, I drive about 5 hours to the north. If it were not for the ProLeft and Al Franken podcasts, I'd be irretrievably lost. Thank You!

That was refreshing. The image of the clacking blinds for the black youngsters sporting their finery will be with me forever, having moved from Eureka to Oakland when I was 23, in 1984.
Also, Gavin Newsom? Nope.
I saw an article in one of my morning newsletters about "fence lizards" with a very cute picture of a lizard looking over the top of a fence and I just thought "Gavin!" ...and that's all the thought I wasted on him.
I voted for Warren in the 2020 primary, and she does seem to still have boundless energy, but perhaps we should make some effort to mine for our newest political gem somewhere shorter in the tooth, as they sometimes say.
Thank you again for the podcast. The damn fool has arrested a judge. Here we go...

Nice downhome Libs of the corn interview.
I would be neglecting my malcontent nature if I didn't criticize that you did not asl Charlie Pierce the burning science question when dabbling in the Sci fy arena.
The question:
Scientists say the Universe is expanding.
Scientists also say black holes are gobbling up space.
Is space expanding faster than black holes are devouring it?

Guess I have to wait until you Beam down Neil DeGrasse Tyson to the corn fields.
