"It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grammes a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be REDUCED to twenty grammes a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.." -- George Orwell, 1984

It will be of no surprise at all that Trump was the same in the 70s. He was desperate to have that generation of NYC's "old money" families -- the descendents of the Vanderbilts, Astors, Fricks, Gugenheims, etc. -- consider him to be "one of them." But, as in any Junior High School, nothing guarantees that you will not be one of the cool kids than /needing/ to be one of the cool kids. Later on he played the "but they were too snobby for a kid from Queens" card, even though courtiers throughout history have found ways to ingratiate themselves, at least enough to be /seen/ as one of the club. Sponsor art showings, hold charity events, etc. But he lacked the ability to even fake having an ounce of class or style, and none of that set wanted him around them.
