A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Gorram

So, it being Thursday yesterday, I was browsing the New York Times' op-ed page to see is David Brooks had written anything especially stupid.  Old habits. y'know.

But no, because Mr. Brook has ascended to that place in Times' op-ed Valhalla where he can show up whenever he chooses and write whatever he wants, and nobody say's nuthin'.  Also too, the Times' has a certain, very generous perk it extends to a rare, few op-ed columnists called "Book Leave".  It's effectively a sabbatical from what is already the easiest job in the world: an arrangement in which , while you are off sharting out your latest masterpiece (which the Times' will also promote through the roof), they ask nothing of you but that you return at some point.

Well good for him.

And that's when I noticed who was on the op-ed page.  Noticed to whom the editors of the New York Times had extended an invitation to pen a guest column.

And it became so very clear that, as a hedge against being hauled away in cattle cars should the Republican fascists come to power in the future, the publishers and editors of  The New York Times have made an affirmative decision to get on the good side of those fascists now.

As I stumbled out of that lightless pit where the corpse of journalism lay rotting, I also happened to stumble across this article by Noah Rothman, who is, inexplicably, an MSNBC columnist and, until very recently held the title of the smarmiest, and most face-punchable hack to regularly appear on Morning Joe because, I guess, Bill Kristol's smarmy, punchable, hack son-in-law, Matthew Continetti, was busy.
