David Brooks Cruelly Cancels The Entire Republican Party

Seems like a perverse thing to do for a person who just signed an open letter decrying the horrors of non-existent "cancel culture" but it's true.

In yet another lazy, error-riddled, paint-by-numbers column (when has Mr. Brooks written any other kind?) about the problems that are crippling our society, Mr. Brooks once again manages to make the entire Republican Party disappear.

So let's skip a stone across Mr. Brooks' shallow, brackish puddle of words to see what he'e really talking about...
Two Cheers for Liberalism! (Or Maybe One and a Half)
Free speech has to rest on a shared morality.

...I defend liberalism because I think...
There follows a Brooks-brand sweeping and false generalization.
I am a liberal in a classical Enlightenment sense...
Translation:  I'm a Conservative who has supported depraved Republican policies my entire adult life but you are out of your damn mind if you think I'm going to even mention that Conservatism exists.  Instead I'll adopt the wingnut Twitter troll's favorite protecting coloration, "classic Liberalism".  Hell, I'll milk an entire column out of it!
Liberalism was based on the idea...
There follows another false and sweeping generalization.
Liberalism was based on the idea...
Yet another bullshit generalization.
Liberalism sometimes devolves into atomization, an alienated society of lonely buffered selves.
Have I mentioned that the first half of this column is nothing but a farrago of ludicrous and wrong categorical pronouncements?
Liberalism assumed that people are primarily...
No, we don't.
By itself, liberalism is so thin it can’t even defend itself.
I don't even know what that means.

Now strap in, because Mr. Brooks is about to make a head-snapping pivot from assembling a laundry of  list of laughably simpleminded generalizations about "Liberalism"...

...to a disquisition on how much he hates laughably simpleminded generalizations.
One of the reasons that America is so angry right now is that there is so much dehumanization. Racism reduces a human being to a skin color. The first casualty in a culture, political or generational war is the willingness to see the full humanity of the other. In this moment, some people seem eager even to dehumanize themselves by reducing themselves to a simple label and making politics their one identity. “Speaking as a. …”
"America is so angry"?  Which Americans David?

"some people seem eager"?  Which people David?
If liberalism left little space for group identity...
It didn't.
You get all these absurd generalizations: White people believe this. Elites believe that.
If I start laughing now at David Brooks' mounting his high horse and riding up the steep cliffs of High Dudgeon over other people's "absurd generalizations" I will never be able to stop.

But calm yourself, kiddo, because Mr. Brooks can save us all from the sucky, imaginary "Liberalism" which he just invented with a megadose of another "ism" that Mr. Brooks has glommed onto.
Personalism is the belief that ...

Personalism is about constructing systems...

Personalism judges each social arrangement by how well it...
800 words about what has brought American society to its knees and not a single mention of Republicans, Conservatives or the political history of the past 30 years.

If I were Newt Gingrich or Rush Limbaugh or Glenn Beck or Sean Hannity or Laura Ingraham I'd be pretty pissed that David Brooks just used his column in The New York Times to cancel my entire life's work

No Half Measures

When the likes of the last remaining original Koch Brother reads a Brools column. And, you know he subscribes just to read Brooks soothing words of conservatism is Sugar and spice and everything nice.
It could cause curiosity of human behavior science to ask,. "what is it Brooks writes when read by these elites? Perhaps Jamie Diamond finds solace in Brooks' words to ease his blood pressure from the stressful day of search for his 6th yacht to purchase.

Who is Brooks'; target consumer?

It is not the Trump QANON (republican base of late) which Brooks to my knowledge has not addressed from the southern cliff, high atop bullshit mountain?

What surprises me about Brooks. Is that he has not succumbed to the Charlie Sykes enigma from his mass consumers. Why is Brooks not a RINO? Why is he not a despicable Liberal?

Just saying, I can watch the old Marx Brothers episodes as "Duck Soup" and come away with more information usable and more credible than any of Brooks' works. Just saying.

If he can make up "personalism", can I make up "conservativesplain"? 'Cause that is totally what he's doing.

"Personalism?" Wasn't he calling his philosophy "relationalism" a year ago when his last book came out?

I swear, talking heads think exclusively in buzzphrases.

Personalism actually sounds like something Brooks could be diagnosed with.

He is arrogant enough to believe that when he invents a dainty term it will become part of our vernacular, you know, like dumpster fire. The even more pitiful thing is that he thinks his "movement" the Weavers, is a movement. Or that anyone thinks about it at all, despite that fact that he's had the real estate of a NYT column and the Aspen Institute, and a couple books, to natter on and shill it.
He's not just odious. He doesn't make sense, he's unreadable.

edmund burke had a very new/old idea...how do you make the ruling class feel better about themselves and collect rent on that relief...

today...same. helping the oppressor feel better about himself.

That is the point. As he presents the elite thought that is too difficult for the lesser mind to grasp. When the lesser mind inquires knowledge / explanations they are fed more dizzying words. and fed to the hungry minds bits of ideology leading them to the emptiness of their lesser being. You are supposed to reach the great guru's 10 level of inane-ism and be special over your peers.
It is far beyond a schtick.

personalism is simply smarm to cool the hoople heads with a college degree and a desire to feel better about themselves to the end of using brooks' own cornucopia of explanations why HE should never feel guilty.

why he had no culpability for the cluster fa*ck. the genius of edmund burke was making the oppressors feel better about themselves...genius!

no, sir, not my problem...
