That Big, Box-Turtle Ben Domenech/Bret Bug Stephens Convergence...

...that you knew would be coming sooner or later.

From Box Turtle Ben's dark money-funded slop-house (no link because fuck 'em):
We Cannot Destroy The Country For The Sake Of New York City

New York City is being ravaged by the Wuhan coronavirus, but the rest of the country is being destroyed by a generation of economic collapse.
From Bret Bug Stephens at the House of Sulzberger:
America Shouldn’t Have to Play by New York Rules

A national lockdown is bad medicine and worse politics
First, there is no "national lockdown".  There are actions being taken state-by-state.  In some cases, county-by-county.

Second, no matter how desperately Stephens wants you to believe otherwise --
Right now, there’s a lot of commentary coming from talking heads (many of them in New York) about the danger of lifting lockdowns in places like Tennessee.
-- this is not a debate being wage between the Liberal Coastal Elite Media on one side, and the noble citizens of Tennessee and the one doctor Stephens quotes on the other.  This is a global medical emergency against which we have no defense, being fought state-by-state based on either the best expert medical advice available or the most craven political calculations imaginable.

But none of this really matters, because debating the facts was not the purpose of either of these despicable editorials.

Both Box Turtle Ben and Bret Bug Stephens know who butters their parsnips and which side of the wingnut mob they need to be on --

-- to hang onto their respective media sinecures.

And they both know that mob is always ravenous and in need of a steady diet --
Perhaps the commentary needs to move in the opposite direction. Tennesseeans are within their rights to return to a semblance of normal life while demanding longer restrictions on New Yorkers.
-- of stories about Heartland Heroes versus the Diseased of Decadent New York.
New York City is the center of the universe; by definition the center of the universe is an anomaly. We cannot base an entire national policy on an anomaly. Err on the side of caution, many say, but is it cautious to destroy entire communities through economic collapse that may not recover for a generation?

yes, the contralto wheedling from Brett Stephens (and yes fuck Domenech who does it with a smile mask) seem to have recognized the danger to themselves of selling the since abandoned and utterly craven "the cure is worse than the disease" wording (while keeping with the theme), deciding on simpler NYC / "urban" as the target.
Though with the current Trump regime refusing a national architecture/infrastructure for testing, tracing and whatever else is needed to combat the covid-19 virus, both these assholes haven't learned what most any parasite without a brain knows...
.. Don't kill the host.

Long ago now, (3 weeks) Mark Sumner @ Daily Kos observed that lacking any form of nationally coordinated response would and up with a body count, which normally should be the last measurement, as the first and only accurate gauge of the spread.

Trump and various GOP "leaders"are already signaled that a so-called 2-3% solution; letting the virus "wash over the country" might do the trick. Herd immunity, while the usual assholes; those chosen ones, remain cloistered away from the 'little people'

Why these paid "conservative" liars changed from spreading the "cure is worse than the disease" propaganda, to the updated; "urban blight" theme (NYC et al.) is not really a mystery. How they pawn off responsibility for endangering (& the deaths of) the Tennesseeans they pretend to protect is - at least to me.

There will be no "recovery for generations" for the 100s of thousands (perhaps millions 2-3% "solution") of people, that over the years (see; Reagan Neshoba county fair / "states right's") they've convinced are so different from one another that war between people is an inevitability, racism is a natural "defense" and a "duty" of every'real American"..

.. Ben Domeneche will do what he always does - smile big and lie his ass off, and pretend nothing happened. Nothing at all really. But How, and with what lies, the Bret Stephens of "conservatism"; the "serious" ones, explain away the deaths of those they feed off of with their fake concerns about middle American workers when it turns out that Wall street crowd managed to profit during and from this crisis while those Heartland heroes and their children were dying off is still unclear - again; at least to me: "the "bootstraps" bullshit? Darwinism is considered heresy with these nut-jobs, so where is the white evangelical loophole for this kind of con job?

note; someday (not likely) I'll learn to use less words. Sorry about the long-winded rant driftglass. Just had to vent. The parasite pictured above Nailed It (the GOP 1%ers/"Donor Class" exposed by Bob Herbert 1998). It'll be rare though. No more than twice a year prolly

Like Brooks, all of Stephens' columns are based on premises that are provably false, and pretty easily so.

And Jesus said unto them. Welcome petulance and death on the on the old and weak and inferiors if it helps the economy. (Falwell 2:27 New Revised Standard Version)

rapier,
If my memory serves me right, to boost up the morale of the moneychangers, Christ included that in his "Sermon on the A-mount!"

This is what passes for intellectualism on the right. Bill Buckley looks good by comparison.

Next time there’s a flood or tornado in TN does that mean NYC can say no disaster $ for them because we don’t have those problems there?

Why don't those lazy states on the border do something about immigration if they geel it is a problem?

Why don;t those bi partisan/partisan republican governors get pull out the Lysol inter venous tube. Get the damn light bulb out of their buts and do something instead of depending on Federal Government and everyone else's money to take care of it?

I mean Oregon was smart enough not to be a border state with Mexico.

But none of this brings justice closure to Hillary's emails.

Why won't Trump's deep throat state act on those emails now that Trump is large brain in charge?
