2 issues.
First,
republicans looking into a mirror metaphor needs further expansion because we all know a blood sucking vampire bat has not the soul to see it's reflection to be ale to "soul search".
2nd,
"does power, privilege & party matter more than principle".
The GOP are far beyond party loyalty, privilege and power. As in the movie "blade" They are "Familiars".
They live, exist for those that own them. Yes, they would sacrifice their own child for their owners.

If one has the insight to ask such a question, he is not a Republican.
"republicans looking into the mirror" is a metaphor.
Actually a code metaphor translating as,

Because Republicans are the "familiars" in the movie Blade.
A good start would be for "independent" political hacks like Mr. Dowd to do so. However, vampires aren't known to have reflections.
