Having laid on second and third shifts of deep core miners to uncover the #NeverTrump pony she just knows must be at the bottom of Trump shitpile. Ms. Jennifer Rubin (one of the many neocon throw-pillows with which Fred Hiatt decorates the op-ed page of the Washington Post) has also accidentally discovered a terrible thing.
The Republican party is full of Republicans.
And a whole lot of those Republicans are -- spoiler! -- awful, shitty, bigoted morons.
It is really quite remarkable.
From the Washington Post:
...One, therefore, is left with an unpleasant reality: A plurality of GOP voters wanted Trump. They did not care or may have actively embraced his lunacy, bigotry and ignorance. His rotten character and abject honesty elicited shrugs. They wore his “pants on fire” fact checks like badges of honor. A significant segment of the GOP primary electorate itself lacked common sense, standards of decency, and intolerance of bigotry and cruelty. No group was worse than the evangelical “leaders” who cheered him along the way.A Republican wag joked that the GOP needs not only a new candidate but also a new base. There is something to that. In the 2016 postmortem, it will be worth examining the extent to which the GOP has promoted crackpots, become ghettoized in distorted right-wing media and lost track of what 21st-century America believes and looks like. That suggests conservative “leaders” need to do more leading, and less following, and the party as a whole has to expand its vision and its base. It’s time to stop reveling in ignorance and celebrating lost causes.Barry Goldwater’s widow was recently quoted as saying, “Barry would be appalled by Mr. Trump’s behavior — the unintelligent and unfiltered and crude communications style. And he’s shallow — so, so shallow.” She continued, “Barry was so true to his convictions and would never be issuing these shallow, crude, accusatory criticisms of the other party or the other person.” She’s right, of course. And yet the GOP primary electorate did not see all that. It’s a problem when the rest of the country has to rescue the GOP and the country from Republican voters’ terrible judgment.
Wow.
So then what happened, Unca Driftglass? Did she hand in her resignation and leave the pundit business to search for a body of water large enough to wash the blood from her own hands?
Will all great Neptune’s ocean wash this blood

Did this public confession that the Left has been speaking nothing but the unvarnished truth about the Right result in a sudden uptick in Liberals hires among the nation's newspapers?
Are any Conservatives anywhere lining up to offer a simple apology for slandered and demonized us dirty hippies for the unforgivable sin of telling the truth?
Are any of them planning to make amends for making a living -- often a very good living -- by lying about us decade after decade?
Oh good God no.
That is not not how these people roll.

Good good stuff.
And may I suggest a new perspective check for the Rubins of the world:
Uh, Jen? Are a certain percentage of the American electorate awful, shitty, bigoted morons? When they do politics, what party do they tend to adhere to? Why is that?
Yep, and come October she'll have fallen i line and be SKREEEE-ing at anyone not supporting the One True ConservaTrump like Donald Sutherland in Invasion of the Body Snatchers because Strategic Forgettery is their superpower.
Now who was it who taught me that???
"Abject honesty"? Really?

"Barry Goldwater’s widow was recently quoted as saying, “Barry would be appalled by Mr. Trump’s behavior — the unintelligent and unfiltered and crude communications style. And he’s shallow — so, so shallow.”"
But I will vote for him............... Can only vote republican.
If only HRC had an "R" in front of her name.
I always find it grimly hilarious when these Republican Detachment patients start moaning about how Trump is getting crucified by the fact-checkers and stirring up hate and bigotry.
They had no such anxiety when Willard Mitt Mittens Romney was doing the exact same fucking thing, just in somewhat more genteel language. Poor Steve Benen probably needed 6 months of R&R to recover after he chronicled Mitt's mendacity.
Back then, bootlickers like Jenny Jen Jen Rubi thought it was brilliant strategery when Mittens' campaign said "we will not let our campaign be dictated by fact-checkers" and thought the only problem with Paul "Zombie-Eyed Granny Starver" Ryan's convention speech (which was basically one big run-on sentence of bald-faced lies) was that the media had the audacity to point out that he "misled" or was "loose with the facts" or whatever polite euphemism for "was full of dirty fucking lies" you want to use.
But Trump is just too much for these delicate flowers? Give me a fucking break. They're in high dudgeon because Trump is going to lose big and is also pulling back the curtain on the fact the GOP base is nothing more than a braindead cult of hate and resentment, and its leaders only exist to do what its wealthy funders want. If they thought Trump was going to win going this route, they'd be all for it. Fucking swine.
Trump knows that Rs have no choice; they're never going to vote for HRC under any conceivable circumstance so he doesn't actually care if he has no significant ground game. Because of their hatred for Democrats and Hillz in particular, he knows they'll come out to vote for him anyway and the election will be a lot closer than it seems right now. As I've noted before, it will all come down to the GOP controlled swing states and there will be yuuuge ratfcking at the polls in those states, you can bet on that.
The thing about JRube ya gotta remember is she writes in the moment. In one blog she'll take Obama to task for wanting to spend a few hundred million on some domestic issue in the face of looming deficits, and in the next she'll chastise him for not engaging in an expensive military intervention somewhere. [Yes, she actually did this]
She does the same thing with intolerance. In late 2012/early 2013 she mentioned her concern over GOP intolerance no fewer than a dozen times, including an election postmortem on the need for the GOP to deal with its Hispanic problem. Then she bonked Colin Powell on the head with her mobile for even thinking there was a streak of intolerance within the party.
Most of these pundits have long been aware of the bigots in the base. Their gnashing of teeth and wringing of hands is really due to the GOP leadership's loss of its ability to keep most of the worms in the can and in line.
Question from the liberal in the back:
What about when you're party filled the majority of State Houses, Governors Mansions, and the House of Republicans with micro-Trumps in 2010?
What about when the micro-Trumps took control of the Senate in 2014?
What were you're thoughts when your micro-Trump Supreme Court Justice kicked the bucket this past year?
What about all the micro-Trumps running right now? Including several threating long time, inside voice, Republicans who, like you, are so mad and scared that they lost control of the RHINO label machine that helped them rise to power?
"That suggests conservative “leaders” need to do more leading, and less following, and the party as a whole has to expand its vision and its base."
This kind of deep thinking is of a piece with pols making statements of the obvious such as "we have to create real jobs for hard working Americans"... twaddle...
@Jimbo- I have more faith in humans, even Republicans. When it comes down to the wire, and people HAVE to make a choice between Drumpf and HRC, I believe a good number of those who are saying we need an outsider, or someone who "can't be bought", or whatever it is they like about Trump will, at the 11th hour realize something important. Namely that we can't risk putting an absolute neophyte, who also happens to be a total narcissist who is used to 100% "my way or the highway" negotiations, rule the US.
I have no love for Hillary, & will vote for her only because she will NOT put another Antonin Scalia on the Supreme Court. but I warrant that she will win the general by a margin along the lines of St Ronnie's...
Fave M. (above),
It is a wise decision and very reasonable one at that when you describe your decision over HRC in view of another corporate hostile takeover of the SCOTUS. I heartily agree
that another Scalia prototype is just as dangerous to the country as a Drumpf with his little hands with those little fingers on the nukes.
How he would fall prey to the desire of being a war president and bringing peace to the world through violence.
Besides a few other hundred reasons.
I agree with several comments above. If Don The Con's constant projectile vomiting by some miracle were to make it to the White House, Rubin would be all "I told you so". Republicans have no integrity, much less moral centers. But I have a modicum of faith in most voters this year, and hope & pray that Trump is toast. Trump Toast (TM)
