Our New Blood Libel

From the Encyclopedia Britannica (via Wiki):
[B]lood libel, also called blood accusation, the superstitious accusation that Jews ritually sacrifice the children of Christians at Passover to obtain blood for unleavened bread. It first emerged in medieval Europe in the 12th century and was revived sporadically in eastern and Central Europe throughout the medieval and modern periods, often leading to the persecution of Jews.
Trafficking in this kind of radioactive poison to fire up the mob is as low as it gets, and anyone who jumps on this bandwagon is not only so unfit for public office, but unfit for public anything.

So, needless to say, the entire GOP presidential field has been fighting over who can pitch the biggest tent on this most ancient and toxic of slanders.  From CNN:
GOP presidential candidates quickly condemned Planned Parenthood on Tuesday and Wednesday morning.

"This is a shocking and horrific reminder that we must do so much more to foster a culture of life in America," tweeted Jeb Bush, who is Catholic and a long-time advocate for pro-life issues.

Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal announced an investigation into Louisiana's Planned Parenthood after seeing it. The social conservative also requested that the FBI assist the Louisiana Department of Health ad Hospitals with the investigation.

"Today's video of a Planned Parenthood official discussing the systematic harvesting and trafficking of human body parts is shocking and gruesome," Jindal said. This same organization is seeking to open an abortion clinic in New Orleans."

Fiorina, the only pro-life woman running for president, called the video tragic and outrageous.

"This isn't about 'choice.' It's about profiting on the death of the unborn while telling women it's about empowerment," she said.

In an email to CNN, Dr. Ben Carson, a retired neurosurgeon, called the video 'shocking' and Planned Parenthood's behavior 'sordid.'

"Planned Parenthood and their enablers must be stopped from these barbaric practices. I am urging Congress to eliminate every last dime of funding for Planned Parenthood," he said. "Finally, I ask where is the Department of Justice on this clear violation of Federal law?"

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee also tweeted his condemnation of the purported video, saying, "I have pledged to defund #PlannedParenthood! Stand with me."

Gov. Rick Perry tweeted out a statement saying the video proves that Planned Parenthood profits off "the tragedy of destroyed human life."

"The video showing a Planned Parenthood employee selling the body parts of aborted children is a disturbing reminder of the organization's penchant for profiting off the tragedy of a destroyed human life," he said. "It is because of stories like this that I signed legislation defunding Planned Parenthood in the state of Texas -- to protect human life and the health and safety of Texans."

Former Sen. Rick Santorum tweeted that his lack of support for Planned Parenthood has been consistent. "Always have been and always will be in favor of defunding @PPact & their destruction and now exploitation of human life," he tweeted.

Well, at least CNN put PP's explanation at the beginning of the article. I think that is some kind of progress for MSM, especially considering it's CNN.

Good morning, Mr. Glass.

"This is a shocking and horrific reminder that we must do so much more to foster a culture of life in America,"

Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go see where else we can make it legal to carry guns.

Be seeing you.

Of course, Crazy Uncle Liberty (and Crazy Aunt Libertina) will scream, "JUST LOOK AT THE VIDEOS!!!!!"--as if visual "evidence" means anything any longer, in this age of digital editing of both still and moving images.

It's the ACORN "scandal" all over again.

@Ivory:
It's worse than the Acorn scandal. At least with Acorn, the issue quietly went away once the video turned out to be fraudulent. Of course, by then, it was too late as the organization had gone under.

Today, we have a video that's widely known to be fraudulent. We've known that for two weeks now. Yet, it's still promoted as "evidence" for their position.

It's the difference between how they used to use stuff that's not proven to be true and now they use stuff that's proven not to be true.

These are scary times in which we live.

The Right now enjoys the de facto right to their own "facts", which are given equal validity with actual facts.

I suspect the grim truth is the rich, and their hired liars, really are as stupid as their tools in the pseudo-populist right-wing rank and file. The rich don't realize that the undermining of science by the legitimation of pseudo-facts will ultimately undermine the technical civilization on which their own power depends.

Babylon's own barons will chant down Babylon, but they are too witless to see that.
