Andrew Sullivan Continues to Puff Puff Pass

...And so a truly counter-cultural conservatism would regard play as the highest of human activities and homo ludens a great cultural achievement – and play is indeed a deep, underlying virtue in Oakeshott’s thought. But so too is a reinvigorated modernist Christianity, the religion of unachievement, the faith that has no time with the American “cult of wellbeing“. This is a conservatism in love with nature, with friendship, with humor – and all those things that can never be reduced to the level of the “useful”. And of course it includes the voice of art, of imagination, of poetry...
Meanwhile, back in the real world, the rest of us continue our desperate battle to to keep real Conservatism from killing and eating us all.

Meanwhile, back in his dorm room. Mr. Sullivan continues to stare at this palm hour after hour and ask, "Man, have you ever really looked at Conservatism?  I mean, really, really looked at it!"

I can't recall such a river of shit flowing from that man's pen. About the only point at which I agreed is the part about conservative Christianity not being a part of the "cult of well being". Well, no shit. They have tried to claw out heathcare and physical and digital infrastructure and education and environmental regulations and food safety and nondiscrimination policies until the fingers of the whores they bought in the government bled.

Sully needs to spend some time traveling America and talking to conservatives. Hell, meeting the people in general.

His bubble seems to be shrinking even faster now that he's self employed. I don't think a monthly jet set to Maher's stage in LA offers that different a perspective than ACELA land.

Maher may be an ass, but at least he travels around to see what the vast majority (of the physical landmass) of this country actually is in person.

Yeah, Sully, that's all good shit (except for Christianity and playfulness getting along, it's like he never heard of the Protestant work ethic).

But you're talking about a political group that would rent out their grandmothers as two dollar back alley hookers if it raised their stock prices by a point.

There's no time for fun in Mitt Romney's America. Only sweatshops and dancing horse competitions and the missionary position, forever.

That episode from Issa was remarkable. He should be stripped of his committee appointments.

He won't of course.

That paragraph is one for the ages.
