Hey guys. Love ya. So I live right near Chevy Chase, like in D.C but RIGHT across the street from Chevey Chase. I've seen Chris Matthews in Starbucks and Obama at Politics and Prose.
Driftglass, the idea that Glen Beck was floating, as you describe it, is basically what "The Secret" (and similar New Age motivational speaking, like "Quantum Jumping") is about. While I agree with "the power of positive thinking" and stuff like that, the scam version is that if you visualize purely enough, you can manifest wealth and knowledge and skills. Throw some Jesus Glitter on it, and you get Prosperity Gospel.
If you fail, it's only because you have failed, not the system of magical thinking.
If you shift the failure to someone else, you get the political version that Glen Beck is pushing.
Ugh, Matthews is just too goddamn stupid to talk to. Maybe "Is it news to you that the rest of the world gets health care for half price? If so, can I have your job so I can tell people?"
For Obama, maybe "Do you think the top tax rate should be 70% like under Nixon?" Followed by "Do you think American progressives deserve a president as liberal as Nixon?"
