“I never said all actors are cattle; what I said was all actors should be treated like cattle."
-- Alfred Hitchcock

Special thanks to my wife, the sublime Blue Gal, who battled the clock and raging Rigellian fever to get this out today!

some comments regarding taxes, specifically credits.

1. the foreign tax credit (FTC) has been around for about 50 years, and are based on tax treaties we have with various countries. bear in mind, this also affects foreigners who invest and receive US sourced income, that they then pay taxes to the US federal gov't on, and then receive a credit on their taxes at home. it doesn't just work one way.

2. the amount of FTC you are allowed to take is limited, by formula and type. this means that, just because you have a $50K credit available, doesn't mean you actually get to use the entire amount in one year.

3. there are multiple types of credits available, all of which are a dollar-for-dollar reduction of your US tax liability, some are even refundable credits, the earned income credit comes quickly to mind.

4. for the most part (with a few exceptions), you need to spend money to get a tax credit (or a deduction), it doesn't just appear out of thin air, with one exception, the earned income credit.

as a cpa, i deal with this issue frequently, and it is too complex an issue to even briefly explain. suffice it to say, the only benefit you gain, from the FTC, is not paying the same tax twice, to two (or three, etc) countries, you still pay the tax to someone.

as well, if we didn't have these tax treaties, foreign investment in the US would pretty much dry up, not a good thing.

this isn't meant as a defense of mitt romney, who is indefensibley a horrible excuse for a human being, simply an explanation of why the FTC isn't, by definition, a bad thing.

just wanted to let you guys know how much I enjoy your podcasts. Growinng up,and through my life, weekend mornings used to be news shows. Other than Chris and Melissa, that little joy is gone now. So what I do these days is get up on sat. Mornings, blue tooth yours and two other podcacts , and do laundry wash dishes etc...gives me a warm old timely radio vibe....
Anyway...I hear the constant centrist meme in my sleep..so pervasive...
I am not sure if there is anything any reublican could utter anymore, that would engender any kind of serious media blowback. It is the joke. If mittens came out tommorow and announced his intention to issue M-14"s to every citizen if elected, it would elicit...chin scratching..
Is this a bold move by Romney? Epic fail?
Point being the narrative is now totally about delivery...not reality. You are both more optimistic than me. If they pull this off, after the monster clusterfuck that has been the republican nominating process...I am thinking... Holland?

It's Monday, Labour Day up here too, and there's no Thom Hartmann, Mike Malloy or other new editions of our usual podcasts to listen to. So I thought I'd do a quick "fuck" count. So far, "shit" and "fuck" are neck-and-neck. Where are is the whingeing about "shit"?!? I demand equal time for shit, goddamit!

But seriously, you are not overly liberal with your carpeting of F-bombs. The yoof of today are far more foul-mouthed. "Fuck" is now one of those conversational stutters like "You know" and "like" and "ummmm" used to be in the 70s and 80s. Even here in civilized Canuckrainia, when I overhear 10-to-15-year olds walking down the street, I'm amazed at how much fucking I hear. They say it more than they do it, I bet.

When you and Blue Gal were talking about the Republican National Convention, it reminded me of the Forbidden Planet movie where Dr. Morbius unknowingly unleashes the powers of his subconscious mind by trying to revive the ancient experiments left behind by the Krell. He is powerless to stop its destruction only because he refuses to face the fact that he is its source! You definitely saw some id unleashed last week...

Why do I support to the Professional Left Podcast?

I support the DG-BG Podcast because of the takeover of Sharia Law.

I support Driftglass and Bluegal because of our country's history of an Evangelical Christian Nation.

I support the Professional Left Podcast because the abortionist agenda delights in killing sweet little babies.

I support the Professional Left Podcast because Obamacare takes away my medical care and freedom.

I support the Professional Left Podcast because Obamacare will destroy Medicare, Medicaid, and removes any work requirements from welfare.

I support the Professional Left Podcast because the militant avowed-homosexualist agenda wants to oppress Christianity.

I support the Professional Left Podcast because Reagan was a saint, and his tax-cuts and de-regulation will usher in an economic golden age.

I support the Professional Left Podcast because Clinton was a rapist and drug dealer and not really our president.

I support the Professional Left Podcast because because Bush was intelligent and a good Christian and questioning the president is treason.

I support the Professional Left Podcast because Obama is a muslin and Muslim and Liberation Christian and Kenyan, and he's not really our president.

Most of all, I support the Professional Left Podcast because each and every one of these things is a lie. Worse, each and every one of these things is a lie made insidious and dangerous because people can hear it by turning on the Radio or Fox News or RedState, and so believe them to be true.

Confucius said that ignorance is the night of the mind, without moon or stars. Some hold up a light against this darkness. Some a searchlight, some a lantern, and some a candle, but a candle can be enough sometimes.

I support the Professional Left Podcast because because they have a fire to give light and warmth to weary travelers.

I support the Professional Left Podcast because they hold out their candles for others to light their own, and hope no more than other candles might be lit further out into the darkness.

So, between all the problems of my own life, I try to return a little warmth to them, because I know that what they've given to me they've given to more others than I cold ever know.

Peace
Mike.K.
