I predict president Obama wins the election. But lets also predict dems get both houses with +51 but less than 60 senators. Can USA afford it when senator Reid sets the 60 senate rule and not the majority rule?
Strongly agree with the industry folks who trace the decline & fall of manufacturing to Reagan; the moment I heard the phrase "dumbing-down" used to describe his effect on education I knew he was a dire threat to America's future (& the world's).
The rise of homeschooling as a right-wing populist rejection of public education looks in retrospect like an epic societal disaster, one that struck right at the moment when the US looked ready to exploit advances in computing to re-ignite & accelerate the Space Age ... even for an outside observer like me that's sort of heartbreaking, all the more so knowing what kind of awesome (& superficially similar) alternatives to the prevalent 19th Century (or is it 9th Century?)school-as-factory mode of education have been proposed by people like Ivan Illich.
I can vouch for that business about the wicked stepmother/ abusive spouse mindset of the right. I have two Facebook friends from the "old days" who are like that.
