It is not one of them: It's ALL of them.
It is not a straight line between A and B: it's the immersive, rage-drunk, paranoid, casually eliminationist sewage in which they all luxuriate.
It is their raving, clattering, hysterical, Wall of Wingnut Sound -- underwritten by their own billionaires, amplified a million times and megaphoned into every corner of America from the pages of Regnery Press trash, from Rush Radio, from Fox News
and from the pulpit -- that drowns out everything else. That has conditioned a generation of weak-minded rubes to mindlessly dehumanize and hate Liberals and blame us for their every ache and itch as thoroughly and automatically as the "good Germans" of the 1930s were conditioned to blame the Jews.
From "They Thought They Were Free":
...But worst of all, it's the professional equivocators
"And one day, too late, your principles, if you were ever sensible of them, all rush in upon you. The burden of self-deception has grown too heavy, and some minor incident, in my case my little boy, hardly more than a baby, saying ‘Jewish swine,’ collapses it all at once, and you see that everything, everything, has changed and changed completely under your nose. The world you live in—your nation, your people—is not the world you were born in at all. The forms are all there, all untouched, all reassuring, the houses, the shops, the jobs, the mealtimes, the visits, the concerts, the cinema, the holidays.
But the spirit, which you never noticed because you made the lifelong mistake of identifying it with the forms, is changed. Now you live in a world of hate and fear, and the people who hate and fear do not even know it themselves; when everyone is transformed, no one is transformed. Now you live in a system which rules without responsibility even to God. The system itself could not have intended this in the beginning, but in order to sustain itself it was compelled to go all the way.
...
who earn their seven-figure salaries by using the cameras they control to reflexively bellow "But the Democrats..." in the face of every Right wing lie and atrocity.
The professional equivocators who drive the getaway cars for the thugs and grifters who, for partisan gain
are sledgehammering our beloved country into something ugly and mad.
Because in order to sustain themselves, they are "compelled to go all the way."
UPDATE: Welcome James Wolcott/Vanity Fair readers. I am honored once again.

The volumn of the denial is becoming deafening.
To imagine the eliminationist rhetoric, calls to violence, howls for blood and murder, use of guns for political stunts, the open display of guns at anti-Democratic rallies, the declarations from Republican Senators and Congressmen that Obama is hitler, they are behind enemy lines, he's coming for your guns, he murders babies, he lies and this happens well I'm shocked!
Of course, the Tea Party and Sarah Palin are responsible. That is why they need to lash out and attack. It's their first reaction after every incident like this...
Driftglass, it's a surveyor's symbol.
What a load of bullshit. These people don't give a fuck about their words or actions.
It makes no difference. No difference at all. We are a nation of ignorant rubes, and our fate is determined by those who profit off of our ignorance.
We cannot repair the damage. We cannot go back and get an "educashon." We cannot, and will not, tolerate those who actually do have a clue.
In the eternal order of things, we are doomed--and rightfully so.
Perfect. Thanks.
Donny Smith: People will never be 'doomed' until we cease to exist as a species.
For most of human history, there has been no middle class and probably 80% of any given population lived under the worse sort of oppression.
If you look at the plays of Shakespeare that take place in Greece and Rome, you are looking at someone in the late 1500's who sees forays into democracy and republicanism as noble but doomed to failure due to the 'rabbles' baser natures.
Possibly spurred on by the industrial revolution, progressives in the west began to spring up and fight for the rights of the general public. These were people who truly did have reason to despair - they looked back on many, many centuries of oppression.
Yet instead of looking backwards they looked ahead, and it is out of these hopeful people the founding fathers wrote our constitution.
Things in America right now look bad as elitist advocates of tyranny gain the upper hand by bamboozling an angry general public with the help of the lackey media - but just know this - progressives have been successful in far worse circumstances than exist today.
There is always hope - and not just the seemingly hollow variety put forth by candidate/now President Obama.
