I'd only disagree on one point - how drifty never gets email from the amateur Left that has crazy.
Matt Taibbi was guilty of the David Brooks Syndrome of conflating the crazy in that book of his where he hangs out with evangelicals and then our problem, the 9/11 Truthers. Given the circumstances of needing a book deal and everything else he does, I forgive him, but the 9/11 truthers really are our version of wingnuts. Of course, given all the typical disinformation and lies surrounding the Bushies, combined with the need to believe that Even If Evil our overlords have some kinda plan (aka like most other religions), at least our nuts aren't pyschopaths.
It's nowhere near as big a movement as the millions strong who follow the smart people (like you two), and given how top secret everything our government does far more plausible than a New Black Panther Party taking over the country, but it still exists.
Of course, our super-relatively tiny number of crazier types are MAGNIFIED INTO RINGLEADERS by FoxNews (and so-vilified by Democrats).
Their crazies are... making millions upon millions of dollars whilst being feted by the Koch Bros and Dick Armey. So really everything you said stands. In fact, given how every fake, lie-filled story about a Bill Ayers, Jeremiah Wright, or even the Bush-approved Imam now is, it really is the way David Brooks helps to keep the Bob Schieffers of the world in Very Serious Land.
I'll never figure out why committed leftists like driftglass here, who spend much of their lives debunking right-wing BS, nevertheless swallow some of that BS if a Clinton is involved. It was a perfect example of "both sides do it" false equivalence.
We criticized Clinton very much in last week's podcast for deregulation and NAFTA.
The difference between the birthers and the 9/11 truthers is, the truthers have been completely ostracized by a-list and non-a-list left wing blogs. I know of at least two a-list blogs where 9/ll conspiracy postings will get you permanently banned.
Show me the right wing blog where calling Obama a muslim gets you banned. I want to believe one exists.
It may be useful to point out that Obama derangement syndrome and Clinton derangement syndrome are in fact two descriptions of the same disease: Democrat in the White House derangement syndrome. The republicans from day one of the Clinton administration spent literally millions of tax payer dollars perusing him for a laundry list of imaginary offenses far too long to list here, only to at long last, nail him to a tree for the horrible act of lying about having consensual sex with another adult. It boggles the mind that this "slinging crap at the wall until something sticks" approach to politics has now become the standard operating procedure for republicans. There is no comparison: One side does it ALL THE TIME!, and the other side does not.
I suppose it won't do me any good to say I'm one of those that believes that there was something fishy about what happened on 9-11. Personally I don't believe that it is a fair equivalence to say people who question the official story of 9-11 are the same sort of crazy as those on the far right. There are leftists who want to push for a complete societal change with a resource based economy. That is much more extreme than those who have legitimate questions regarding some of the events that happened on 9-11. I'm sorry myself and others who believe the official 9-11 story is suspect embarasses you.
Jason, On the contrary, I believe there is a lot that it "fishy" about the official story of 9/11, and would love to see the inconsistencies and criminal incompetence around those events investigated. OTOH, I also believe there are a million miles between that legitimately angry skepticism and the "inside job" crowd who speak of the intimate details of secret cabals in such loud and definitive certainties.
Also, for the record, I know all 17 of those "leftists who want to push for a complete societal change with a resource based economy" and other than all being over 90 and kinda gassy and forgetful, they're all very lovely people :-)

Beware the cult of the offhand comment.
There isn't an Obama Derangement Syndrome. It's just wingers being wingers. But there definitely is a Clinton Derangement Syndrome.
And 9/11 truthers is the only example of crazy leftists there is. A category doesn't exist if there's only one thing in it.
So Driftglass is Jean Reno's twin? Cool...
deering - yes he is!

Sorry to hijack your thread, DG!
