From Wikipedia:
"If you say in the first chapter that there is a rifle hanging on the wall, in the second or third chapter it absolutely must go off. If it's not going to be fired, it shouldn't be hanging there."--S. Shchukin, Memoirs (1911) on
Anton Chekhov's foreshadowing rule

When dealing with crazy/crotchety old white guys, it's safe to assume that a significant component of their mental malfunction is male menopause. Therefore, it is absolutely a wise move to complement them on how nice their gun looks.
I think you meant "flout" there, but OK.
Come on, Hatch is always flaunting his ignorance.
And she has made her way in the world by playing up to "crazy/crotchety old white guys" as well as the crazy young guys.
She's perfect for Obama!
Love ya,

This was just Hatch's clever way of ensuring that Kagan is on the right's side of gun control. More's the pity that she had to describe the clunky POS as "gorgeous."
I would have been much more impressed if she had asked, "may I?," taken it down off the wall and pointed it at him.
Just for effect, y'know.
