Conservatives Talk To American Teens

About

Immigration

Policy

I must have fallen asleep during the intermission, but weren't the absolutely unfettered and unregulated forces of greed, selfishness and Darwinism supposed to solve all of our problems by now?

Yes, they were. "Free" trade and totally unregulated, unsupervised corporations were not only going to make us all fabulously wealthy, they would regulate THEMSELVES!!! There would be no need for a damned GUBMINT bureaucrat getting in the way of those honest, conscientious corporate executives! They'll do the right thing!

People in West Virginia and all around the Gulf of Mexico can tell you how well that's worked out for everyone.

..and don't forget the real Reagan: I first heard this ditty (tossed from actual Reagan sound bites) when he was the nominee in June 1980 (on my local public radio station, when it actually was public, before Reagan cut public broadcasting funding and brought commercials to it.)

...And kids today believe the Reagan hype -- geez. Dribbling, senile old fool....

This is one of the conservative myths that I rail against all the time: They're reduced to basically saying that if you look at our country and squint just right and hold it kinda sideways and catch the light just right, it's kinda sorta basically as good as it was before Reagan took over.

That's really the best they can do. And I ask them, "Weren't things supposed to be BETTER?"
