Woman who tried to kill Ford released from prison

HOUSTON (Reuters) - Lynette "Squeaky" Fromme, who tried to assassinate President Gerald Ford in 1975 and was a follower of mass murderer Charles Manson, was released from a Texas prison on Friday after serving her sentence, the Federal Bureau of Prisons said.

Fromme, 60, had been serving a life sentence for the assassination attempt but was eligible for parole almost 25 years ago. She had waived her right to parole previously and chose to remain in prison.

...

Fromme had told her defense attorney she staged the attack on Ford because she "wanted to get some attention for a new trial" for Manson and members of his group.

Whether Fromme deserved her exit visa from the House of Many Doors or not, I suspect that if the woman who darned Charlie Manson's socks and then went on to jam a gun in a President's face had looked more like this,

they would be keeping her in stir until the end of time.

At least she had the good taste not to try impressing Jodie Foster.

Angela made out fine for herself, tenured at Santa Cruz and now retired to a life of activism and speakers' fees. A comparison to Leonard Peltier, an American Indian convicted (in what many call a show trial) of killing FBI agents in a shootout, who 33 years later does still rot in jail, would be more fitting.
