RIP Black Moses

Via CNN:

Soul singer and arranger Isaac Hayes, who won Grammy awards and an Oscar for the theme from the 1971 action film "Shaft," has died, sheriff's officials in Memphis, Tennessee, reported Sunday.

Relatives found Hayes, 65, unconscious in his home next to a still-running treadmill, said Steve Shular, a spokesman for the Shelby County Sheriff's Department.

Paramedics attempted to revive him and took him to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after 2 p.m., the sheriff's department said.

No foul play is suspected, the agency said in a written statement.

...

The theme from "Shaft" will be rolling out of a million computers tonight, as is right and proper as it's not just a phenominal song but a cultural touchstone.

So for something from a little deeper in the pews, this is Ike's luscious cover of "Walk On By" from "Hot Buttered Soul":

Make believe you never see
the tears I cry
So do me a favor
and walk on by

Bad weekend - Isaac and Bernie.

There'll be some good music and laughs somewhere.

Hot Buttered Soul was one of THOSE albums.
Like Sgt. Pepper.
Like Pet Sounds.

I finally got to see Mr. Hayes in '98 or so. A small park in South Sacramento, 1,500 or so . . . Mr. Hayes had agreed to perform for free to help out the black neighborhood alliance reclaiming 'hood . . . this was the annual celebration of their changes . . . Mr. Hayes DID that kind of thing . . . his whole band and HE, were phreakin awesom . . . and he did a 20 minute version of Walk On By, too . . .

He sure changed music in his time . . . and albeit it was thru the use of keys and machines to replace live horns and musicians, he shaped a sound that's as classic as anything Barry Gordy or Phil Spector shaped . . .

RIP Mr. Hayes, you were grand while you were here and you did good for others . . . that's some serious noble shit right there . . .

Glad you represented for Mr, Hayes, Drifty, thanks.

okay, that's it. Stop! Just Stop IT! Death. You SUCK! You muthafff..

okay, I'll shut my mouth.

damn. Bernie Mac and Isaac Hayes.

two people I've never known personally, but have admired from afar for the singularity of awsomeness they brought into this world. Made jokes and music that just made my heart bounce, bust a gut, and if real lucky, fall in love.

fuck. had to say it. FFFUUUCCKKK!!!

People. All you beautiful, wonderful, creative, insightful, shining like crazy diamond people.

PLease, stop dying.

I know. Death is everywhere, the leveler. Unpretentious and uninterested in time, date, place, proximity to justice. But I think lately, Death, you've been a bit of.. well, an 'OverAchiever'.

And that ain't right, no sir.
Not right at all.

Damn shame about Issac Hayes, and immediately on the heels of Bernie Mac's passing, too. It never rains but it pours, eh? Death can be a greedy bitch at times.
