Why is America in trouble?

One, simple reason.

From The Guardian UK:

Talk show host signs $38m deal

Rightwing radio talker Rush Limbaugh has signed a $38m (£19m) a year contract to continue with his vitriolic brand of conservative politics, making him one of the highest-paid media figures in the US.

The contract - said to run for eight years -with Premiere Radio Networks and Clear Channel Radio ensures Limbaugh will remain a force in US politics for years to come. The figure was reported yesterday on the New York Times website.

Limbaugh is one of the most popular radio talk show hosts in the country: an estimated 20 million listeners tune in to roughly 600 stations nationwide to hear him mock liberal politicians and denounce political correctness and feminism.

...

America is in trouble because we have waaay too many stupid people and they have capsized our ship of state.

America is in trouble because, in America,

A bag of tainted meat...

Can be paid 1/3 of a billion dollars...

To tell an army of moon-faced trailer trash...

That bigotry and pig-ignorance...

Are patriotism's highest virtues...

For three hours a day...

On 600 stations coast-to-coast...

For the next eight years.

Yep, pretty much sums it all up.

Correct me if I'm wrong (I'm no math genius) but 1/3 of a billion dollars would be more like 380 million, right?

And 38 million is more like 1/30th of a billion?

Regardless, I agree with the sentiment completely.

I'll never figure out how his addiction and law-breaking can be overlooked by his self-righteous and fearful listeners.

I guess the need to hate and blame someone for their troubles trumps all.

Kevin O,

Your math would be correct if this was only a one year deal for Rushbo. But it is for 8 years, so we have a total of $304M dollars. In addition there is some type of signing bonus, though how much is unclear.

The right wing bloggers have been running around with erections saying it is a "9-figure bonus" (over $100M) on top of the $304M contract. It may be less.

Either way, he's within shouting distance of $333M - or maybe well over it.

Disgusting, but there you have it.

it'll be nice when the next president raises the marginal income tax rate for buffoons like Rushbo up to a fair(?) 70 or 80%...

think of how many schoools for abused little boys or drug rehab centers for pill poppers the govt could build with the $250M in tax revenue generated from Rushbo's outrageous salary...

On the other hand, if you can wind him up enough to say "N*gger" or "b*tch" or both within the first 6 months, his contract is void. Not as easy it sounds, alas. Try it on November 5th.

Whoever signs the checks must figure Obama's going to win in November so things are going to start picking up over in right-wing wackaloon, hate-everyone-who-isn't-a-white-male land. Limbaugh's glory days were the Clinton years; I heard (and would like to believe) his ratings have been steadily dropping with aWol in the White House.

The biggest part of the problem is the concentration of the media (radio, television, newspapers) in so few hands. That's another issue the next president can work on.

Well, between his reich-sanctioned junkie privileges and the fun things that can befall sex tourists, just maybe he'll be blowing Father Coughlin and Joe Goebbels in hell before that contract's up. I like to expect the best.

It is a disgrace. I spent the 5th of July with my family- all big listeners and lovers of that fatuous fuck.

I can say fatuous fuck here can't I?

I hope so. I have now said it twice and if I don't shut up a third one will come out soon.

his deal is more like $400 million

there is only one way to fight this --- right to his advertisers and just threaten to not use their products

a small step, but nonetheless a way to start

If you were the kind of person who paid attention to reality, with its messy 'facts' and evidence', you wouldn't be listening to Rush in the first place, except maybe as a masochistic anthropological study.

Rush is the gap-toothed white trash loser's kkkargo kkult, comforting them with a warm blanket of hate in a scary, changing world they can't handle, full of nonwhite people who are, unjustifiably in their view, more intelligent and capable than they are.

You don't dare question the Big Protecting Daddy, or point out his blatant flaws and hypocrisies, lest the spell be broken and he ceases to provide you with magical protection.

So they will continue building control towers and radios out of bamboo and straw like some latter day Gilligan's Island, praying for the day when Rush will smite their neighboring tribes and deliver the effortless, endless bounty they have earned with their blind obedience.

Could someone just list his sponsers for me. I don't think I could stand to listen.

OOOOOOHHHHHH deliver us from hell! F'in Limbaugh! There's a reason the walls around him lean in, he sucks!

nan, I fixed your sentence: going to start picking up over in right-wing wackaloon, hate-everyone-who-isn't-a-white-STRAIGHT male land
