long john was one of those guys like mayall that most of the folks who would later make up the "british invasion" all worked their way through. the "john" of elton john came as a tribute to him. booogee woogee indeed.
The Brit Invasion pop groups had LOTS of inspirations amongst MANY regional influences.
Long John, and Mayall, are certainly two.
Before them, Alexis Koerner, Lonnie Donegan, and others.
But never to forget, it was the American blues, contry and R&B artists who really got to the Brits, and influenced everyone from the early Beatles, Stones, Fleetwood Mac and yes, Mayall and Long John.
What an era that was back and forth over the pond.
