Reject his spawn.
It is very sad when fathers disown their children.
Very sad.
The guy in the picture is Richard A. Viguerie, who I don’t know from Adam’s off ox, but when he speaks about himself in the third person – as crazy people often do – he points out that he “pioneered ideological and political direct mail” (which is sorta like bragging about being the “Patient Zero of syphilitic stinkfoot!”), “the funding father of the conservative movement” and an assistant builder of “dozens of conservative organizations.”
Also in his CV is “Moral Majority cofounder” which, again, is like ballyhooing that you brought plague rats to Europe: something the “nice people” wouldn’t tout in the ‘ol resume. Still I’m sure it wowed the acutely-angled-brow, “Ain’t it a hoot that Ann Coulter called John Edwards a faggot” crowd at the annual Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) hate fest in our nation’s capitol.
Which I’m aware of because the other thing that I know about Richard A. Viguerie is that he sends me emails every so often for reason’s which remain mysterious but I’m sure may involve transposed email addresses, or pranksters, or a staffer who was a little too distracted by flocking his tiny Christmas tree to Ann Coulter hateporn to double check the mailing list.
Regardless of how it came into my hands (And not mine alone. Apparently the inimitable Digby also got this missive. And then, as they say, hilarity ensued.) it made for fascinating crapper reading.
On the one hand, I kinda feel for the guy. He is straight-up furious at Republican leadership for the messes they made.
On the other, ever-so-much-larger hand, like Preznit Drinky having his nose rubbed in the disaster in Iraq, he barely acknowledges that he is the fucking author of the horrorshow from which he is now angrily backpedaling, and his prescription for the problem is to double up the dosage of poison that caused it the first place.
Here are some lovely snips from “Strategies for a Bold Conservative Future” --
Conservative Political Action Conference -- Regency Ballroom -- Omni Shoreham Hotel -- Washington, D.C. -- Thursday, March 1, 2007 (which Richard A. Viguerie’s 3rd Person Omniscient Voice tells us was “repeatedly interrupted with enthusiastic applause", and "he received a standing ovation at the end”):
To have a successful future, it helps to understand the past.
First, let’s understand that conservatives and conservatism did not lose last November.
The election loss was a direct result of the Republican Party and its leadership in the White House and Congress moving left.
See. Isn’t that clever of him!
Right off the fucking bat, its not that the GOP has simply become corrupt or insane by fulfilling their dogma.
Not that the racist and Christopathic Right haven’t just followed the logic of their monstrous ideology to its predictably fatal, disastrous conclusion.
Not that New Orleans and Iraq actually represent the apotheosis of the Newt Gingrich/Karl Rove/Jerry Falwell Modern Conservative values – a complete cessation of meddlesome government oversight and responsibility, a complete collapse of a strong press who hold the powerful to account, and a “shoot first and then shoot anyone who ask questions later” foreign policy.
In other words, it’s not that they won and then did exactly what they said they were going to do – bankrupt the treasury to prevent Evil Liberals from spending it on the poor, ruin the military because Conservative don’t give a shit about intelligently protecting anything past their own back yard, and turneing our international good name into a burning shithouse around which they dance.
No, it is because – as so many, many other have predicted – once the chickenhawks start to come home to roost and the world could clearly see that a Conservative's touch turns everything to offal…they will run squawking from their Leaders whining that they weren’t Conservative Enough.
That they are “moving left.”
Bwahahaha!
Richard A. Viguerie continues.
…
In other words, the Republicans’ real message was: “We didn’t want the Democrats spending the money, but now that we are totally in charge, let’s blow the door off the bank vault, and let’s spend and spend and spend our children and grandchildren’s inheritance.”
ALL FOR THE SOLE IMMORAL, CORRUPT PURPOSE OF HOLDING ONTO POWER.
And how appropriate that it turned into ashes in their mouth.
In January 2001, for all intents and purposes, the Republicans in the White House and Congress adopted a one-word strategy to govern.
And that one word was BRIBERY.
In essence they said to the voters ‘you’ve got votes-we’ve got money-let’s talk - let’s deal.’
The illegal corruption of Duke Cunningham, Bob Ney, Jack Abramoff, and Mark Foley is not a serious problem for us, our children, or grandchildren’s lives.
They’ve been caught and punished.
But far worse crimes have been committed by the politicians who are still sitting in their Capitol Hill offices. I’m talking about the legalized theft of trillions of dollars these politicians have stolen from the children of tomorrow – in order to buy votes to stay in office today.
Therefore conservatives, our #1 need going forward is for new leaders.
Conservatives are like the Biblical Jews who had to wander through the desert for 40 years until that generation of immoral corrupt leaders had passed away.
As conservatives, we’re not going to get to the political Promised Land until we also get new, uncorrupt, principled leaders.
…
My strong recommendation is for conservatives to stop being an arm of the Republican Party and become a 3rd Force, but not a 3rd Party.
The left has had enormous success by building strong 3rd force groups and coalitions.
The left has hundreds of environmental groups, consumer groups, civil rights groups, feminist groups, and homosexual groups, etc., etc.
And these groups have their own agenda, their own members, their own money, and most importantly they operate independent of the Democratic Party
Conservatives must do the same.
…
Oh, please, please, please go fuck yourself with a steam hammer
You, Richard A. Viguerie, bragged not ten paragraphs ago that you “pioneered ideological and political direct mail”. That you are “the funding father of the conservative movement”.
You, won, Richard A. Viguerie!
Don't you remember your own Victory Slogans? From 2000? From 2004?: “We won. You lost. Get over it.”
You won, Richard A. Viguerie. You won. You were taken up on to the mountain top, shown the Kingdoms of the Earth, and you said “Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!”
And you won, thanks precisely to that coalition of Klansmen, religious bigots and billionaires you guys spent last thirty years building.
You now have your own well-funded think tanks that crank out…cranks. Pasty little veal cutlets full of sound and fury and a million excuses why they…uh…can’t…uh…y’know…serve in…uh…Iraq.
Which, according to you Conservatives, Richard A. Viguerie, is the most important human conflict since the Battle of Tours.
You have your own, massively well-funded fake Media. You bankrolled the takeover of PTAs and Library boards from coast to coast so that the Jebus Youth wouldn’t have to have their beautiful minds unbecalmed by actual history, science or literature.
Your minions illegally redrew voting districts in Texas to hang onto your Majority.
You have your own newspapers.
You have your own publishing houses that keep the job-lots of creepy, fascist “literature” your brain caste extrude on best seller lists.
Your own lavishly financed counterfeit Christianity complete with its own well-fed perverts running the scam, its own satellite network and its own GOTV machinery.
And having run the fucking table, your prescription for Conservativism is this:
We need to greatly increase the size and number of principled conservative organizations.
...
And your threat is this:
Let’s withhold support from all Republican National Committees because they spend our money in primaries to defeat conservatives.
Let’s withhold support from most Republican elected officials, supporting only those few principled conservatives
Let’s challenge in primaries all establishment big government Republicans and Democrats at the National, state, and local levels.
…
I don’t know about you, but I’m angry and I feel betrayed, but fortunately there are things we conservatives can do to become a governing majority in America.
However, it’s not likely to happen quickly, certainly not by 2008.
One of the strengths of the conservative movement is we’ve always approached politics as a marathon, not a sprint.
It may take 6-10 years for conservatives to be able to govern America.
…
It is very sad when a father disowns his children, which is what Richard A. Viguerie and others are doing.
Like our Iraqi Debacle, Richard A. Viguerie and others like him built their movement by their own hand from their own ideological blueprint. Brick-by-brick, they created George W. Bush, Dick Cheney, Rush Limbaugh and Jerry Falwell and all the rest of their rogues gallery, and now have the nerve to go all Victor Frankenstein on their breedlings.
To swear that, next time, their Monster will be perfect!
I didn’t actually hear Richard A. Viguerie CPAC speech, but I gotta think it sounded a lot
like this…
And as in “The Lion in Winter”, Richard A. Viguerie cannot see that he and his ideology are the problem, and that they will always beget mutants. Instead he believes that the solution to his movement’s troubles is to whelp yet another litter of Conservitard zombies.
Instead of looking within, he cries for a new wife.
Henry: A new wife, wife, will bear me sons.
Eleanor: That is the single thing of which I would have thought
you had enough.
Henry: I want a son.
Eleanor: We could populate a country town with country
girls who've borne you sons. How many is it? Help me count the bastards.
Henry: All my sons are bastards.
All your sons are bastards, Richard A. Viguerie.
And they always will be.

anyhoo, I really laughed at the "Adam's off ox" reference there.
peel me off the floor. yeah.
"bankrupt the Treasury to prevent Evil Liberals from spending it on the poor..."
When I was first becoming conscious of politics [during and after Watergate] I thought conservatives opposed the welfare state because they sincerely believed it would bankrupt the country, thereby creating more poverty than it eliminated. It took me years to realize that they simply, irrationally, UN-Christianly HATED THE POOR. I still don't quite understand why they do, although I know that it partially comes from the popular myth that the majority of recipients of welfare programs are nonwhite [in truth, the majority of such beneficiaries are white Anglo citizens, and that has always been the case].
Of course, in using the term "welfare", I am speaking of welfare for the common citizen. The Right has always favored welfare for corporations and wealthy citizens, much of it disguised as "defense" spending.
We wouldn't NEED much of even LEGITIMATE defense spending if our government avoided foreign interventions, as the Founders intended. However, US and multinational corporations profit from stealing the labor and resources of the Global South [formerly known as the Third World], so our government, being a wholly-owned subsidiary of the aforementioned corporations, thanks to that marvelous mechanism of legalized bribery known as "campaign contributions", maims and kills brown people for resisting enslavement to corporations, and supports those treacherous despots and henchmen among the brown peoples who are willing to jail, maim, and kill their own kind for a share of the corporate loot.
I reckon 99% of those foreigners who hate us now hate us primarily, if not solely, for that reason.
If we, the sane, ever get this country back from the pseudo-conservatives and their corporate masters, we must return to the peaceful foreign policy of the Founders. ["pseudo-" because there is nothing truly conservative about messianic foreign policies and budget deficits the size of Jupiter.] Selah.

It's just scary how much that guy looks like Red Forman from "That 70's Show".
I was justabout to say it, too, Loveandlight!
I can hear him now...
Eric: Bad things keep happening to me, like I have bad luck or something.
Red Forman: Son, you don't have bad luck. The reason bad things happen to you? is because you're a DUMBASS.
Skunqesh: That conversation would fit in the real world with Dubya as Eric and Bush Senior as Red.
...callin them BASTARDS

one more for the road:
Red Forman: Without rules, we all might as well be up in a tree flinging our crap at each other.
C'mon Driftglass,
I'm calling you out for the giant NON-SEQUITOR you've authored here.
Even a cursory reading of history would show that Viguerie has NEVER been a Bush supporter, not GW nor his pappy.
He's been one of only a few conservative figures that consistently (since mid 1980s, way before 'read my lips') and courageously have debunked the Bushies' claims to be principled conservatives.
Hanging the Bush presidencies on Viguerie is just misinformed. He's been saying the same thing about the Bushes for twenty years.
anonymous,
Here you go:
"Right-wing direct mail guru Richard Viguerie declared, "Conservatives are thrilled that Bush, a centrist, establishment Republican, has selected a solid conservative to balance the ticket." He went on to address Bush's strategy to keep both the right- and moderate- wings of the party on board: "Dick Cheney looks like 'them'(establishment republicans) but he sounds like (and is) one of 'us' - a principled conservative."
National Review editorialized, "The Republican ticket is now exquisitely balanced: a man of the center who doesn't alienate the right has now chosen a man of the right who doesn't alienate the center." In short, according to a well-known conservative quoted by Robert Novak, Cheney is "[GOP Whip] Tom DeLay with table manners."
Cheney's dark heart and deranged ideology are twin Conservative the engines that elevated the Bush Presidency from mere bumblefuck incompetence into arguably the worst, most disasterous administration in American history.
And Viguerie's brief against Dubya is that he isn't more Cheneyesque.
To win, the Cons chose to blend Klansmen and Theocrats into their electoral smoothie, and people were warning that this was where Conservativism was heading as far back as the 80's.
So I call bullshit right back.
All Viguerie is doing is co-opting the oldest, most delusional Marxist alibi for of Communism's sins -- that Communism Cannot Fail; Communism can only Be Failed -- and dressing it up in Conservative clothing.
All,
Red Formen killed people in Korea.
I would not mess lightly with him
All Viguerie is doing is co-opting the oldest, most delusional Marxist alibi for of Communism's sins -- that Communism Cannot Fail; Communism can only Be Failed -- and dressing it up in Conservative clothing.
It often occurs to me that "Movement Conservativism" has gotten where it has by imitating the "American Communist Conspiracy" that existed mostly in their fevered imaginations. I think a case can be made that Movement Conservatism is something of a departure from the traditional variant. If I were to give Movement Conservatism an accurately descriptive label, I would call it "plutocratic reactionism", as clunky and neo-Marxist as that sounds. But I would still ask Viguerie why he didn't see where things were going twenty years ago if indeed he would claim to be "the real deal".
[[his prescription for the problem is to double up the dosage of poison that caused it the first place.]]
OK, if insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result, what's doing the same thing over and over but doubling the stakes each time?
(Other than a geometric progress of insanity, of course.)
