Snowflake Babies

Sing Songs of Love

Found these matched gems back-to-back at Steve’s House of Plain Speaking.

First, his commentary on reports that the Green Party in Pennsylvania may – hold onto your hats! – be a stalking horse for the GOP.

No, the Green Party is run by the dumbest set of motherfuckers since Doug Feith and his crew.
Does this assclown Romanelli think he's playing the GOP? Does he?

This kind of stupidity is the reason that the Greens are a joke. Yeah, Bob Casey is to the right, and he's not getting my money, but Santorum has to go. It's just that simple.

They're like runaways turned out by their pimp boyfriend who "needs the money". They're too dumb to realize how they're being used. Do they think they're going to "get their message out"? Do they think they're outsmarting the GOP?

The Dems aren't left enough for them, so they go to the right. Logic right out of Stalin telling the German communists to not fight the Nazis, because things would get so bad that the communists would eventually win. Jesus fucking christ. What idiocy.

Here's the deal: politics as temper tantrum suck. People need sane people in office more than you need to feel right. I could give a shit about Bob Casey, but Santorum has to go. My lab partner is a monkey could do a better job than Santorum.

Well color me shocked: that in Sin City – which is where we ALL live, baby, and don’t you forget it – the idea of soiling their starched ideological flounces so terrifies The Pure that they believe handing the world over to the vastly-greater-of-two-evils is preferable, because it hastens the day the whole system’ll crash.

N’then we’ll take the fight to the streets, dude!

N’then...something something...and a fucking miracle is passed...and we get Walden III with hot chicks and hash for everyone!

Or at least that’s how I used to feel.

I used to think that of COURSE that’s not how the real world works. Or has ever worked. Ever. At any time. Under any circumstances.

I used to mock such thinking as lazy. As a cheap, sugar-high-quick course taken because the hard-scary-long-duration-low-reward answer requires too much patience and persistence.

Because from here it is so bitterly, ironically obvious that the Pure jump down precisely the same rabbit hole side by side with the very people they despise -- the Fundies, the Fascists and maybe the Commies. And they do it for precisely the same reasons. Each in their different colored togs, but each drunk off the same bottle: that through some kind of supercool, Blowed-Up-Real-Good controlled demolition of the status quo, they will lead the survivors of the dust and slaughter and will Create a Better World.

Of course, there will have to be sacrifices. (Translation: A whole LOT of people are gonna hafta die before we get to the Rapture/National Socialist World State/New Communist Man Utopia)

Except, of course, that there are several billion regular people who would much rather you not play ducks and drakes with their lives. Who would just like to not have their governments and corporations kill them. Who just want to raise their kids and breathe the air.

And except, of course, the dust never clears. The carnage never stops. The New Order never rises; it just gets worse, as the OCD Pure keep trying to cleanse it all with their particular brand of holy fire.

But this by Billmon (also via Steve Gilliard) opened my eyes and spun me right round, baby.

Right round!
...
So here's my confession: At this point I really don't give a flying fuck whether the Democrats take the House or the Senate back. No, wait, that's not true. The truth is I hope they don't. It wouldn't save us from what's coming down the road, in the Middle East and elsewhere. It wouldn't force President Psychopath to change course or seek therapy. But it would make sure that the "left" (ha ha ha) gets more than its fair share of blame for the approaching debacle.

That may well be the natural role of the Democratic Party in our one-and-a-half party system, but I don't want any part of it any more. Which means that when I say it's a bad sign (consensus opinion always being wrong) that Charlie Cook now thinks the Republicans are likely to lose their House and/or Senate majorities in November, I just mean that it's a bad sign for the Democratic Party and its professional hangers on.

For the rest of us, and for whatever is left of this country's soul, it doesn't really matter. We've already lost.

Of course Steve give the usual, muscular Liberal rebuke to that kind of talk with this kind of talk with this kind of talk…

...
It's easy to sit back and say nothing will happen to Bush, because nothing will happen to you. But if you're fighting with the VA . it fucking matters. If your kid is in Iraq, it fucking matters. Fuck the shit which comes with Bush, there are people who need the help, even minimal help, a Democratic Congress can provide.

A lot of nice, middle class progressives forget that the fight isn't for them. You think for one second I believe Ned Lamont knows what it's like to be working class, much less working class and black, living in a New Haven housing project?

What I know is that Joe Lieberman turned his back on those people and put his foot on their necks in so many ways I've lost count. It's their kids dying in Iraq, coming home to a fucked up VA, not getting their benefits.

At least Lamont wants to listen and Lieberman stopped long ago.

You better remember that if you see a vast sea, there are some folks drowning and the question is whether you save them or leave them to their fate.
...

Which may have persuaded me back in the day, but now I realize that even though no one in their right mind expects moral purity and ideological congruence with their garbage man, teacher, doctor, journalist or pastor…in politics it is perfectly reasonable to demand faultless adherence to my unique set of principle or priorities.

That although a rule-of-thumb, “good enough” strategy is usually good enough for the way we deal with practical problems in the real world – where we constantly have to triage our problems and ration our time -- in politics only an unbroken record of all-holes-and-both-hands chastity will suffice. You must be hand-glove with me from the Persian Gulf to pot to the FCC: anything less is an insult to the Glorious Cause!

Which is why I'm voting straight Snowflake Baby ticket this Fall and in '08.

Because when it comes to contests of sinlessness and flawlessness, no one can beat a Snowflake Baby. And anyone who is not perfect and pure is equally as bad as everyone else who is not perfect and pure.

And once we hand every instrumentality of power over to thugs, I’m sure the ensuing Dark Ages will be so fucking awful that one day what’s left of the people will rise up from their misery, hunger, Family Guy reruns and exhausting labors. They will charge the wire, and swat the gunships from the sky with, uh, something something...righteousness.

Then someone will pass a fucking miracle and sweep the Snowflake Baby Party to power. And the old world shall pass away, and all shall be made new again, and from then on it’s just babes and hash.

So as election day draws near, please remember the Snowflake Baby Party motto:
"Pol Pot and Paul Lind -- both equally worse than a Snowflake Baby."

i'm leaning in the "no goddamned incumbents" direction. of course, living in a red mormon dominated state all our incumbents basicly suck. snowflake sounds good to me. something clean and cold, like a beer ad.

Hey, man, remember what the Naderites said in 2000.

Things have to get worse before they can get... worse some more.

But then, after that, things really have to get worse before they... get really, really, bad.

and of course they'll all vote green!!!

You just gotta have faith in the hegelia... no the historical necessit... wait I mean the power of jesu...

At last, a party I can participate in without wearing a lampshade.

I just hope they don't expel me if I spill my brandy or light a cigar.

The Minstrel Boy,
I lucked out: most of my incumbents are decent at the national level.
Locally we need to clean the stables out.

justathought,
The reasoning was, "If you gimmie your 50 million votes and I add them to mine...then we'll have 50.0001 million votes! Then we can get some shit done."

Kevin Hayden,
Just don't light your brandy.

Steve's "Pugil Stick Training" pep talk was sorta the icing on this bloggy cake. The gist: when sparing, knock 'em down till they can't get up, not 'won't' get up. How true, how true.

There's been much splintering of the democratic party, and maybe it's for the best. The Vichy are the casualty of too much power for too long. The Kept Veal element of it will always love it's master, no matter how much BBQ sauce it bestows upon it's soft succulent backside. That small fringe element (progressives) that still somehow gets up off the floor, and decides 'no more Mr/Ms Nice Herbivore, no more Omnivoer, I'm goin CARNIVORE on yer sorry ass, NOW!' is the one that's gonna come screaming out of the ashes.

I hope. :-P

But you guys forget something important: your own party has 100% sold you out. Hillary? Please-her main complaint is we didn't bomb and maim enough Iraqis. The national Democratic Party leadership? tripping over themselves to "support" Israel's quixotic campaign to "eliminate Hezbollah (which they couldn't do after 18 years of controlling southern Lebanon) by bombing civillian infrastructure and Christian enclaves and U. N. observation posts.

I'm sorry, folks. Lesser Evilism has given us people like Harry Reid and Joe Lieberman and Hillary Clinton. It's either an 1856 moment, or the Republic is doomed. As too many of you seem to be eager to still throw your support behind a bankrupt party bereft of ideas, I'm voting for the "doomed" myself. Oh well. No kids, and I'm an unhealthy mid 40s, so hopefully I won't see the results of a political system whose "choices" are insipid corporate drones and right wingers like Casey and Hillary and Lieberman and Kerry and the whole crew of lickspittles.

I'm pretty convinced at this point that our whole way of life is headed for a huge and major crash that only incidentally has anything to do with such concepts as "Democrats" and "Republicans". But I still intend to vote for Democrats simply because the Republican Regime has become such a gods-awful kakistocracy that they're definitely not the crew I'd rather see in charge as we circle the drain. Democrat politicians are at least willing to be reasonable. How much that will actually help us remains to be seen. At the very least, I don't see how it could make things worse. (I'm just Little Mary Sunshine this morning, aren't I?)

And another thing about the Greens is that (at least I've heard), they're very much given to the very sort of "Judean Popular Front" factionalism that has paralyzed the far left for the past century or so. That same factionalism would have prevented the Marxist revolution in Russia (the party split between the Bolsheviks and the Mensheviks). It was just that Lenin's willingness to get Russia out of WWI whatever the cost was what won the day for the Bolsheviks. That and their utter fanatical ruthlessness.

Well...I will actually probably vote for the dems, too. I'm not quite at the "Stop me before I vote again" level, but I feel the same sense of impending doom. As for Stevce Gilliard's arguments that it does matter: who killed welfare as a real, ongoing base of support for people (Clinton). Who shoved through NAFTA (Clinton). Who killed upwards of 500,000 children through sanctions (Clinton).

Hillary would probably be worse, because she is even more careerist, even more callous, than The Great Empathizer.

Stop Right There. Hillary is NOT the National Face of the Democrats, and I for one am sick of her being the benchmark everyone sets when they try to make a point about How The Dems Are Just As Bad. Jezuz Louise. If people really have THAT bad of a memory that they cannot discern the difference between the way life was in 90's and how it is in the 00's then they deserve the insanely corrupt government we get under Total Republican Rule. And no, I do not revere Bill Clinton, he made mistakes, but dammit, we were not in the danger of anhilation then that we are now! Some people need a big old helping of wake the fuck up.

Yeah, people who think Democrats give a shit about their liberal base. People who think that principles always give way to triangulation. Yes, necessity requires a Democratic vote to preserve some small speck of honor and hope for this country. That does not mean we should not be organizing people every day to clean house within the party. The Republican rat bastards have got to go, but any Dems who collude in furthering the War on Terra have got to be kicked hard in the shins as well.
