Could someone explain to me the appeal of watching a movie or video clip when it's roughly the size of a matchbox? Are people so desperate to feel "plugged in" that they'll go blind looking at the tiny screen?

It's also the attraction of having your entire record collection in a package that's approximately one half inch thick. Every. Single. CD. That. You. Own. What's not to like about that?
And screw the video. Everybody knows that this is crap for video. I'm still looking for the box that connects your PC with your TV via AirPort, so that you can use your PC as a DVR, and so that you can download and purchase video to play on your TV. I suppose that even a salesman like Jobs hasn't jawboned the studio bigwigs into that sort of setup yet. Just give him time.

Checkout the input/outputs as it can be connected to other devices... I think more important than video is the calendar, contacts, MUSIC and file capabilities for just $299. I could never see the need for a PDA but this with the Mpeg player option hits me as a good thing. I doubt I would even think to use the video capability.

I own 4,500 CD's. About 600 of them are operas (I count the 4 CD's in a Die Walkure as one). Most of those operas are 2-3 CD's and, in the case of the many Wagner recordings I have, 4-5 CD's. There's no way that even 1/4 of my collection could fit on that.
And they're not made for operas or classical music in general. I have some opera CD's that have 40 cue points on a disc. What a nightmare to program.
What happens if you lose the thing? Or it gets corrupted? If you're like a friend of mine who bought one, dumped his collection on to one and got rid of all his CD's, you're screwed. No thanks, I'll stick to my CD's and Walkman with a nice pair of Sennheiser earphones.
When they can stream digital stuff directly in to my cerebral cortex (something that Robert Moog was working on when he died), then I'll be impressed.
Oh and fuck the White Sox.
I splurged on an iPod (30 GB) a few weeks back. (For me, a good part of vacation fun is taking along a fancy new tech. device to play with.) I like it quite a lot--arguably one of the coolest-looking items I've ever owned. But it's not something I feel comfortable taking everywhere--ironic, given that portability is the main selling factor. For one thing, the finish and the screen scratch if you breathe on them, making buying covers/holders mandatory. Anything that delicate is bound to break faster than it needs to at some point (and given my rough-and-tumble mode of living, that point will be surely be sooner than later--:). There are few things that kill the joy of owning something faster than constantly being afraid it's gonna break. In addition, it attracts more attention than I like (something I didn't buy this for and didn't even think to factor in. Shoot, I would have thought these things had been out there long enough for a lot more folks to have them--especially given how behind the curve I usually am--g!) CD players are the norm 'round my hood, and I'd much rather continue toting my nicely-rugged Sony CD player to the laundrymat/cafe/park/wherever and enjoy my wanderings than to have to worry about my music player. And, finally, the idea of having to put all my music on the Pod is too daunting--and risky. With my luck, the dern thing would corrupt the minute I tossed my CDs/tapes. And I'd have to spend money to get stuff to transfer my tapes to my PC. So, as it stands now, my iPod lives happily in the living room, giving up a soundtrack for my writing and satisfying my aesthetic cravings. :) And it reminds me once again that one of the dangers of having a life full of high-end stuff is that one's life often becomes about maintaining it, not living.
And stop those human sacrifices.
