Short People

Got no reason to live.

Pssst. That Joe Max fella has another slideshow/movie dealie here that you would be well-advised to check out. Pass it on, but be discrete: a certain fascist telecom organization may be watching. And if you make those moving picture thingies, shit, give this man a j-o-b blocking and storyboarding. Do, and I'll punch up the script for scale.

And maybe its because it’s Sunday, or this particular Sunday is also such a melancholy anniversary, but Joe’s video got me thinking about Short Person Number One.

Jesus Christ.

Somewhere in New Orleans, Jesus died again.

A poor, brown man who died cruelly, alone, abandoned by powerful men who -- believe it or not -- weren't Demon Atheists or Evil Humanists.

Oh my no.

Not men who stand neutral on the subject of Religion. Who strive to keep the public square Secular so that those of all faiths, or none, can flourish.

Oh my goodness no.

The men who run our Federal Government, our Congress and our Courts make it a point of nauseating, overweening pride to let all and sundry know at every opportunity that they are blessed and highly favored by Almighty God. Bloated Christopath monsters who run explicitly on the platform that God loves them and hates fags and feminists and other ungodly Usual Suspects, because God is a White, pro-War, uber-Capitalist, American Conservative.

Men who call for political assassination in the name of God.

Who blame classroom massacres on teaching children Science.

Who positively leaped to blame 9/11 on gays and the ACLU.

And since NOLA was their wettest dream come true, it’s hard to understand why they’re hiding from it?

These are people take to their crusty beds every night having gotten down on chubby knees and prayed like Hell for Hell on Earth.

Who view the deaths of sinful billions at the hands of their Chick Tract, Nuclear Zeus of a god to be a wonderful thing. An end towards which they should bend every effort.

This is the Party run by men who are explicitly pro-Armageddon. A Party that is run – run! -- by gruesome, soul-dead, wind-up shitboxes like Tom DeLay, who believes that American foreign policy in the Middle East should push events in the direction of Judgment Day whenever possible. Run by a President who launches his Post Modern Crusade by ignoring facts when they fly in the face of simpleton theology, and the advice of real, expert human beings, in favor of the voices of his Higher Father in his head.

So what was Katrina but a glimpse inside Jerry Falwell’s deepest midnight masturbatory fantasy? A little patch of Heaven that James Dobson begs his Deathgod to visit on our fair, green world every single fucking day?

Hell, it even came with a not-so-dry-run of The Rapture, where the Economically Righteous were spirited away to Glory...and “those people” were Left Behind to tender mercies of flood, thirst, disease and gators.

These are the men that run America, and in a few days the body of the man they call their Savior will be found trapped in an attic or under a bridge. A poor, brown man who died cruelly, alone, abandoned and will be buried -- unnoted and unnoticed – in a pauper’s grave.

Years from now, the sheriff who will find him, and the coroner who will tag and bury his body will remember him for one, singular feature.

“His face,” they’ll say. “It wasn’t angry and it wasn’t scared. It was just...sad. So unbelievably sad.”

And they will not know that the Risen Lord died to the sound of foul water lapping all around him. To the distant helicopters and screams that tapered off into prayers that finally tapered off into silence.

They will not realize that He died knowing full well that He had told His Faithful – unambiguously -- in the very Book that Dobson pounds so freely and on which Bush took his oath as he was sworn into office twice, that "Whatever you neglected to do unto one of these least of these, you neglected to do unto Me!"

They will not understand that He died heartbroken, wondering how much clearer He could possibly have been.

Great post. The new video, well, it rubs me the wrong way.

Sorry, but in my opinion the whimsical tone of Randy Newman's classic is inimicable to the tragedy of the photos, and diminishes the enormity of the tragedy... which, by contrast, your blog entry here captures.

"Us and Them" worked. It's a scream of anguish about the nightmare of history... and was appropriate to the images.

"Short People" just comes up short. It's in the wrong key.

I'm looking for the right word -- transcendent, stellar.

These pseudo Christians should be called "ians" -- because Christ is nowhere in their religion (or moral system). They jump from the old testament to the rapture without even a nod at Christ.

Buddy, Leon Podesta just reminded us that "values" is the GOP strong point, so fighting against Justice Roberts would be hopeless. 'Cause one thing that the entire DC power structure agrees on is that "values" is some flammable shit, and if someone, anyone took "values" outta the "hate them homos and, ahem, inner-city trash" reservation and started talking about "money changers in the temple" and stuff, things could get out of hand muy pronto.

The Pharisee Party rules America and no matches are allowed in their house.

I appreciate and respect your opinion, Malacandra. I think it deserves a response.

Irony is the theme, as it was with Newman's song taken all by itself.

I recall that when that song came out, Newman was criticized for the same reasons, and for other reasons as well. It was a song about prejudice, cast in a whismical but satirical tone that many said made light of the very real evils of bigotry and hate.

And he was also denounced by some people of short physical stature for writing a song that made fun of them. Some folks are just dense, I guess.

Sometimes a scream of anger is the proper response to such blatant evil. That was "Us & Them". Sometimes we have to shake our heads and seek the release of smiling through our tears. This is "Short People." As Cotton Mather once observed, "The devil cannot abide being mocked."

My wife (my most merciless critic who gets to watch the daily rushes) said she didn't know whether to laugh or cry, and ended up doing both -- but that's what makes it work. I think I stayed true to Newman's spirit of the original, and I hope someday he'll get to see it -- and hopefully agree with me.

And Drifty, thanks again for the forum. All through the making of the video I kept recalling those words of the unpretentious carpenter from Nazareth, the very same words you ended your essay with. You got it, brother. You got it exactly.

I encourage those who enjoyed the video to download it and see that it doesn't dissappear under the hammer of corporate censorship.

Joe,

I respect you too. And your skills.

I also am a great fan of "banishing with humor". And I love even the darkest of satire: Twain. Voltaire. Vonnegut. One of my favorite movies, "The Ruling Class", is often judged to be too dark by most of the friends I recommend it to. But I don't know that "A Modest Proposal" would have worked as a film, either.

Randy Newman was accused of insensitivity by people who didn't see his song as an attack on prejudice itself. I think that's just dim, especially given his bridge. Anyways, I appreciate what he's doing in the song.

And it's certainly not hard for me to enjoy humor that is ripping into the folks who I think are responsible for much of the needless suffering in the aftermath of Katrina.

It just felt to me (and this is my personal reaction only and others will, and certainly do, respond differently) that these particalar lyrics, and this particular music, when juxtaposed with the photos of the victims... had the unintended effect of apparently trivializing the victims.

I would not have had the same reaction if you had used "It's Money that Matters" as the soundtrack, for example. That would have been a contrast of the crassness of materialism with the human lives destroyed by calamity and poverty... I think it would have been an effective statement.

But "Short People" is a song of scorn, and petty scorn, at that. It makes fun of hated people... to show the idiocy of making fun of hated people, certainly... but nevertheless, that's what's going on while we're presented with pictures of people who have just had their lives destroyed... and left to their own devices by a government too callous and incompetant to intervene.

I know that derision wasn't your motivation. But as Sir Donald Wolfit famously said on his deathbed, "Dying is easy... Comedy is hard."

Using those gut-wrenching photos as part of an indictment that holds up to ridicule the lack of conscience of the powerful... we'll that wouldn't have bothered me one bit... but it felt like the proper object of derision was too far removed from the scene of most of this video.

But I really, really did love "Us and Them". :}

Life is the Cross, and we are all nailed to it. People who think that suffering is for others are already dead.

Be gentle with the Falwells and the Robertsons and those that unthinkingly follow them. As much as they may smell, it is the odor of their own spiritual death.

I never realised how important a good bed was until I got a bad back.
Over 1,400 members of BackCare, the national organisation for healthy backs, responded to our Back Your Bed survey - the first of its kind to explore the views on beds of those who suffer from bad backs and the experts who treat them.
SUMMARY OF THE BACK YOUR BED SURVEY RESULTS
Buying a good bed is one of the most important purchases you can make when it comes to back pain relief. Nine out of 10 say their bed is more important to them since they developed back pain; 98% agreed that a good, supportive bed could help a bad back. 82% of experts felt that the right bed could help prevent back pain.
"If you cannot rest properly and sleep well, this hinders recovery from back problems."
A firm, supportive bed, not a hard one, can do wonders to ease and even prevent bad backs. Only 22% of sufferers had bought a bed classed as orthopaedic; while 28% describe their bed support as medium. Only 6% of experts would recommend an orthopaedic bed to patients.

Three quarters would be prepared to spend more than 500 on a new bed: compared with just 36% of the normal population. Nearly one in 10 would pay more than 2,000 for a new bed to get the comfort and relief they need.
Back pain sufferers are twice as likely as the rest of the population to own a new bed - 50% have beds that are less than five years old compared to the national average of 24%.
88% are satisfied with their choice but 16% said they would get a better quality one next time; while 9% would opt for something firmer; 5% said they would choose a softer bed and 4% wanted a bigger one.

Sufferers are three times more likely to replace their beds when they no longer feel comfortable (65% compared with just 20%).
31% own a king size bed compared with 11% generally. Separate mattresses zipped together are also popular with couples whose support needs differ or who are easily disturbed by their partner's movements. top
So worth considering when buying a

A bunk bed should have guard rails that have no more than three and one-half inches of space between the rail and the mattress. This will prevent children from falling through the space and potentially injuring themselves. If necessary, you may need to install extra boards if the space between the guard rail and the mattress.
