Meanwhile, on the “B” Ark…

This from the NYT...

August 31, 2005
Teaching of Creationism Is Endorsed in New Survey
By LAURIE GOODSTEIN
In a finding that is likely to intensify the debate over what to teach students about the origins of life, a poll released yesterday found that nearly two-thirds of Americans say that creationism should be taught alongside evolution in public schools.

The poll found that 42 percent of respondents held strict creationist views, agreeing that "living things have existed in their present form since the beginning of time."

In contrast, 48 percent said they believed that humans had evolved over time. But of those, 18 percent said that evolution was "guided by a supreme being," and 26 percent said that evolution occurred through natural selection. In all, 64 percent said they were open to the idea of teaching creationism in addition to evolution, while 38 percent favored replacing evolution with creationism.

The poll was conducted July 7-17 by the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life and the Pew Research Center for the People and the Press. The questions about evolution were asked of 2,000 people. The margin of error was 2.5 percentage points.
John C. Green, a senior fellow at the Pew Forum, said he was surprised to see that teaching both evolution and creationism was favored not only by conservative Christians, but also by majorities of secular respondents, liberal Democrats and those who accept the theory of natural selection. Mr. Green called it a reflection of "American pragmatism."

"It's like they're saying, 'Some people see it this way, some see it that way, so just teach it all and let the kids figure it out.' It seems like a nice compromise, but it infuriates both the creationists and the scientists," said Mr. Green, who is also a professor at the University of Akron in Ohio.
...

Except, of course, for the simple fact that there is no debate.

Creationism is, and always has been, superstitious drivel, and no scientist of standing anywhere has two kind words to rub together on the subject.

Intelligent Design is simply cladding the ignorant Theotardery of Creationism up in stealth technology. It is a "Dinosaurs Wore Hats" arguement.

Well can you prove they didn't?

And since you can't disprove that dinos wore chapeaus (which would, in turn, imply a Supreme Hat Maker behind it all) why can’t we slot this sassy, new Borsalinosaurus Theory in between the Theory of Evolution and the Flying Spaghetti Monster Theory...and then let the kids decide what they want to believe.

Brilliant!

Let’s let eight-year-olds decide what’s “Science” and what’s not while Reverend Righteous T. Pecksniff stands behind the “Pterodactyls in Berets” diorama at the Science Fair and tells impressionable Little Jimmy that if he doesn’t believe in the Divine Milliner he’ll burn in a Lake of Fire forever.

This is simplicity itself: The Reverend Righteous T. Pecksniffs of the world need to keep Little Jimmy stupid, because without stupid people, the Reverend Righteous T. Pecksniffs of the world would have no followers. In this way they honor their "B" Ark ancestry.

Oh, you're Unfamiliar with the “B” Ark?

Go read “Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy”.

I’ll wait.

Busy?

Well…OK.

This from Wikipedia should explain the reference (“Wikipedia”; available from at your local pharmacy. If your local dry-goods vendor or tavern owner doesn’t carry “Wikipedia”...ask him why? That’s “Wikipedia”. Ask for it by name. )

Golgafrincham, home of the Great Circling Poets of Arium, decided it was time to rid itself of an entire useless third of its population, and so concocted a story that their planet would shortly be destroyed in some great catastrophe.

The useless population (consisting of hairdressers, tired TV producers, insurance salesmen, personnel officers, security guards, management consultants, telephone sanitizers and the like) were packed into the B-Ark, one of three giant Ark spaceships, and told that everyone else would follow shortly in the other two.

The other two thirds of the population, of course, did not follow and "led full, rich and happy lives until they were all suddenly wiped out by a virulent disease contracted from a dirty telephone".

The B-Ark landed here.

And after a long day of gene-pool contaminatin’, Dubya votin’ and teaching their whelplings that snake-handlin’s every bit an scientificable as moon landin’ (which was prob’ly faked up by them Jebus-Hatin’ Hollywood Liberals, ‘cause everyone knows God live on the Moon) at least the Red Dirt Republicans won’t lack for entertainment

'Dukes' Sequel In The Works
Original Cast Has Committed
Aug. 30 - Don't put those Daisy Dukes away quite yet, a 'Dukes of Hazard' sequel is now in the works. The original cast has already signed on for the movie.

Sheesh.

Max Rosentreter, religion can be taught, BUT NOT in science classes. A scientific law or theory can be proven false and changed by experiments that can be replicated. That makes science fact and proof based. Religion doesn't have facts or proofs, religions have beliefs. Beliefs that appeal to some people, and not to other people.

If schools were doing a better job teaching readin and writin, then religions could be taught in school as literature, mythology stories, and comparative religions like the FSM, witchcraft and Islam. Our schools don't time to do that now, sorry.

If preachers want to come into schools and teach biology, then educators should go into churchs and teach evolution.

Maybe God sends hurricanes against people for being deliberately stupid.

what many people doesn't get is that science is not democratic. It doesn't matter whether 98% of the population believes in creationism or not. Science deals only with theories that can be proved (or disproved) not opinions.
Galileo was almost burned because he said the earth revolved around the sun, but guess what, he was right no matter what the bible said

I am amazed at the creationists' total blindness to Java Man, Peking Man, dinosaurs, whooly mammoths, igneous rock, etc.
But what would I know, Drifty. I'm still howling about the shit and the pony!

The universe as we know it is created by the non-stop copulation and orgasmic outflow of Shiva and Shakti. That is Creationsism. Teach that in the schools.

Oh, it's not in the Bible? So it's the Bible you want taught in the schools? BZZZZZ Wrong answer! See US Consitution, 1st Amendment. Yes, 1 comes before 2. You want #2, you have to accept #1.

A little nitpick. The story of the B-Ark actually happens in "The Resturaunt at the End of the Universe".

Just a little nitpick :)

Most people can't tell when the American Civil War was fought, or the Revolutionary War; and I'd bet most can't tell when the War of 1812 was, either. Should the teaching of American History be changed to include such variances?

let the kids figure it out?
Well OBVIOUSLY they can. That's why they go to schools, to teach...oh, wait. I'm wrong. Kids say the darndest things.

ps. Stop with the HHGTTG or your gonna end up in a lot of searches :)
No, really, I appreciate it.

Actually, there's no point in referencing the B-Ark story.

"England, home of the English, decided it was time to rid itself of an entire useless portion of its population.

The useless population (consisting of Puritans) were put on ships and told to get the fuck out."

Same ending.

a little snippet for the moment:

"I do not feel obliged to believe that the same god who has endowed us with sense, reason and intellect has intended us to forgo their use."
—Galileo
"Galileo is a hero - a sort of spiritual father - to many scientists because he dared stand up to the anti-science culture of his day."
From 'Galileo's stepchildren'
Gregory A Petsko

Galileo Galilei
Excommunicated 1633.
Reinstated 1992.
Chew on that for awhile.

Fans of sense, reason, intellect, and tragic comedy might enjoy the original blog of science blogs, Prof. Bob Parks "What's New"

Here's the latest salvo from the Christopaths, from the Daily Californian at UC-Berkeley:

"Christian Groups Sue UC Over Course Requirements"

Basically, they want their homeschoolin' courses on Flying Spaghetti Jebusism to be accepted for history and science requirements of incoming high school students by the University of California.

http://www.dailycal.org/article.php?id=19254
http://www.dailycal.org/article.php?id=19245

Their "textbooks" are published by Bob Jones "University", and UC rejected any course cirruculum based on those "textbooks" for admission.

UC is fighting the lawsuit. You might want to take a swing at this in your blog, Dr. Driftglass. They could use the help.

Really?
The useless population (consisting of Puritans) were put on ships and told to get the fuck out."

I was "taught" to "think" people chose to leave.

My bad...
that's what happens when kids figure things out I guess.

Really, kicked out?
