I smoked for a number of years.

Now I don’t. Haven't for a long while, but I still light up in my dreams.

Don't let anyone kid you: you can buffer it, but quitting for me was every bit as much the sweaty, hellbitch of a nightmare that everyone says it is, and I failed at it many times.

Many, many times.

Then I succeeded, and to be perfectly honest it was mostly because the day came when I decided I didn’t want to die of something stupid.

I was a considerate smoker -- didn’t blow it in your face, took it outside if it bothered you, and (almost) never used the world as my ashtray. I figured if you smoke, you should at least not shit things up for others.

If you smoke, you should quit. Thus endeth the sermon.

There is no sermon, and I didn’t become an Evangelical Ex-Smoker, because I despised those people when I was hooked. However, it is also true that the ambient pressure of living in a world where smoking was considered a dirty, stupid habit helped me stop.

Why bring this up?

Because political affiliation is a lot like smoking, and the Moderates I know are a helluva lot like the addict who simultaneously knows better at some level...and yet doesn’t want to believe that the blood they cough up into the sink has anything to do with the poison with which they fill their lungs.

They want to climb up on the laps of the likes of Limbaugh and Hannity and Coulter and O’Reilly -- the Political equivalents of the Assassin Executives of Big Tobacco – who assure them that it’s really OK. That their product isn’t really dangerous. Isn’t lethal. Isn’t killing them and everyone around them.

The rationalizing of the Moderates I know is also identical to the rationalizing of a smoker.

“Everything’s fine – I don’t need to quit.”
“You’re full of shit – I don’t need to quit.”
“I have things under control – I don’t need to quit.”
“I feel great – I don’t need to quit.”
“Get offa my achin' back, dickhed. There is nothing wrong here. I don’t need to quit.”

And after many years of this call-and-response, the smoker coughs up a lung...and the Moderate finds that his Party has been completely consumed by a metastasizing Christopathic Cult.

And then comes...

“Well, since it’s too late now, I might as well keep smoking!”

This same perverse fractal repeats itself again and again most noticeably in the Republican Party Line on Iraq:

““Everything’s fine! Everything’s Great! Greeted as Liberators! Mission Accomplished! What resistance? Just a few Regime Dead-Enders! Bring ‘Em On.”

And now that the Administration’s lies are bleeding out right and left...

“Well, OK, maybe we’re fucked, but Bwahahaha! It’s Too Late Now! So let’s just Keep On Smoking!

I’m a pretty bright guy and getting right up in my grill was never going to work on me: I was too facile a debater and too quick a counterpuncher to let any Evangelizing Ex-Smoker land any blows, even though they were right, and I was dead wrong.

What did work -- what did gnaw at me -- was raising the ambient temperature. Creating a pervasive atmosphere where it was just a given that smoking was stupid.

And while I will continue to joyfully pimpwhip asshats like Brooks and Hume and Malkin, I do not expect them to change their deeply entrenched and deeply dishonorable positions one little bit, which ironically is precisely why I continue to have great hopes for the future.

Because the more they blather arrant idiocy that is shown to be arrant idiocy by the headlines every morning, the more the ambient temperature climbs.

The more Scotty McClellan tries to dirty-dance Bush out of his own words as those words putrefy right before our eyes, the more they look exactly like Tobacco Executives – standing before a veritable Everest of documents showing them to be liars – still swearing that they had no idea that those coffin nails they’d gotten rich selling to children were any more dangerous that mother’s milk.

And somewhere out there it’s 2:00 a.m. and a Moderate lies awake, watching this unfold. Having spent years smoking down Republican lies by day, he is reaching the point where all of the pretty dogma he has been trained to believe is no longer sufficient to explain away the blood he coughs up at night.

Not in great numbers yet, but by one's and two's, they look at their Party and what a monstrous thing it has become at the hand of the liars who have seized it, gutted it and dance on it’s grave, and they ask themselves:

“Do I really want to die from something this stupid?”

This is an exerpt from Septembers Harpers:
[Advisory]
THE LITTLE RED PACK
From essays and testimonials on tobacco information websites run by the Chinese Government.
People often ascribe the inability to quit smoking to a weak will. In reality, it is well known that many great men smoked, like Churchill, Mao Zedong, etc. The smokers all around us now are also people of outstanding character. They have a great deal of determination and strength. They have courage that they show in the face of unforeseen events-a courage that many nonsmokers are unable to muster- is unforgetable.
TESTIMONIAL:
Smoking gives you the feeling of having company. Many people think that friendship is an external thing; in reality, your own actions can become your companion. I used to travel to lots of places by myself, going everywhere under the sun. By the time I was 25, I had covered nearlty the whole country. On the road, I was really lonely, so I started to smoke. Of course, smoking gradually became other things for me with time. When my life becomes a frantic rush, I light up a cigarette and walk calmly for a while. Smoking is itself a sort of mission-not because of the way cigs are used but because you grow accustomed to relying on them. It us just like how when you leave home, before you marry, you miss your parents, but later you miss your husband of wife. How could I not smoke?

Love your site, keep up the good work

Somehow my favorite column by Molly Ivins (post 2004 election) ties in very well with this. Mostly with the consequences of Doing Something Stupid and Dangerous sticking with you until you stop doing it. For your edification and entertainment.

No, I'd prefer to die from something stupid like the time I had no health insurance, peritonitis and an undiagnosed ruptured appendix (which had caused the peritonitis) and they ushered me out of the hospital so I wouldn't rack up the medical bills. I lived for 10 days with the ruptured appendix, but I would have preferred to die from something stupid like that, I'm sure.

I think it's amusing (and I predicted this) that everyone commenting on this post comnpletely lost sight of the real point Driftglass was making. The anecdote about smoking was merely a synecdoche in an analogy that he was drawing. Now the actual point of the post was very, very true and ought not be forgotten: Most people would rather fight than switch their political affiliations. In fact, I'd say that the percentage of ex-smokers is even higher than that of people who had jumped ship and mustered for duty on another.

This draws on something interesting: My mother-in-law, avers my wife, recently told told her daughter that she's not so keen on George Bush, anymore. Was it Cindy Sheehan or the war on Iraq, I asked?

No, was the answer: My MIL, who still supports Nixon with the fervor of Archie Bunker, has stopped supporting Bush because she's finally realizing that he's just too fucking stupid.

True story, I swear to God.

So, even in her dotage, my MIL doesn't want to die supporting someone so stupid.

And if that doesn't give me incentive to quit smoking cigarettes, nothing will, because it must hurt like hell for that old Republican bat to pubicly admit that.

Ladies and gentlemen:

The ghost of Dr. Thompson posts in this blog. I'm now convince.

Didn't mean to add to any static factor. Driftglass always writes top posts. And I understood the analogy and in some ways it was a good one, and I should have left it alone. But what had seized my brain was that politics and the prevailing culture tend to feed out the "life is fair" line and that everyone's given the right and same building blocks and if you work them the right way, then life is fair and the consequences are good. If you just exercise the way you should (which works well if you have health care, and don't grow up in a toxic dump that the govt said was green, and if you don't have genes or environmental factors, whatever, that slam you with illness that gets even the cleanest of us), if you just invest right (if you have the money), if you study and work right and get the good job (and hope your pension isn't stolen), the future, you are told is wide open and for everyone. And then If things don't turn out well for you the moral factor is levied, you have done something that is the Achilles Heel that has snipped your future and landed you flat in the land of no bootstrap pull-up. And though I knew the intention of the analogy, I for that reason I guess went flying off into what may be seen as a left field and is. Because the life-is-fair-and-failure-is-moral is not just a Republican virtue. It's found romping everywhere. I was thinking about all the people who did vote Democrat and were rewarded with the Bankruptcy Reform Bill. This bothers me. Sure, the Republicans are monstrous. But, hell, what the Dems have been throwing at us under the protest that you save up your points for fighting only what you know you can fight in some dusky future, is insane. And the Bankruptcy Bill, for instance, what it does to families who have been devastated by things such as illness, failure of Dems and Republicans to address health care concerns...well, like I said, I suppose I should have left the analogy alone. But I had a kind of seizure there. And it seems I just had another one. Better stop now before I totally fry my brain with another irrelevant spasm.

"Do I really want to die from something this stupid?"

Precisely. They will come, one by one, and two by two, back from the precipice...

And we will together pull back the curtain.

Unfortunately, I feel certain many will suffer in doing so, but all will understand it's need.

I really must say this is one of the most beneficial blogs I have ever come across. I am not just saying that to kiss up to you! I am doing a research paper for my master degrees and spent the last 10 hours (and 12 cups of coffee) researching this area topic. So many blogs have generic information but yours is different. I can actually apply some of this information to my works. No worries I will give you credit in my references. I took it upon myself to put you in my favorites and will visit back to let you know how my grade ends up. Many thanks!washington home owner insurance.
