American Family Association boycotting Ford Motor Co. over gay issues

DETROIT (AP) -- A conservative Christian group launched a boycott against Ford Motor Co. Tuesday, saying the second-largest U.S. automaker has given thousands of dollars to gay rights groups, offers benefits to same-sex couples and actively recruits gay employees.

"From redefining family to include homosexual marriage, to giving hundreds of thousands of dollars to support homosexual groups and their agenda, to forcing managers to attend diversity training on how to promote the acceptance of homosexuality... Ford leads the way," American Family Association chairman Donald Wildmon said in a statement.

Ford responded that it respects its customers and employees.

"Ford values all people, regardless of their race, religion, gender, sexual orientation and cultural or physical differences," Ford vice president of human resources Joe Laymon said.

Laymon added that other automakers -- including General Motors Corp. and Chrysler Corp. -- provide benefits for same-sex partners and market their vehicles to the gay community.

"It is one of the things that makes us proud to be part of the auto industry," Laymon said.

Tupelo, Miss.-based AFA said it e-mailed an announcement about the Ford boycott to 2.2 million supporters. AFA special projects director Randy Sharp said nearly 55,000 people had signed a pledge supporting the boycott by Tuesday afternoon.

Sharp is upset by Ford's marketing tactics in gay-oriented publications, including offering to donate $1,000 to the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation for every Jaguar or Land Rover sold.

"Ford is willing to do something they have refused to do for any other group," Sharp said.

This boycott will fail, but serves to limn yet again the true face of the Gorgons that rule the Republican Party these days.

And point out yet again that, not since Ray Milland snuggled into Rosie Greer’s ass-crack to make “The Thing With Two Heads” has there been a more bizarre, unnatural and badly-acted union than Moderate, small gummint Republicans trying to pretend that the Shining Path Republicans who now completely own their party, really don’t.

Or really aren’t there.

Or really aren’t serious.

Please remember, Don Wildmon has been a fixture of the Republican Party for over twenty years. Harlan Ellison was writing essays about him and his filthy fellow travelers like Jerry Falwell in the late-70’s and early-80’s. They and their profoundly hateful, bigoted ideology have been feted and flattered, cozened and cuddled and enthusiastically embraced by the GOP.

The one thing they have never been is repudiated by the Moderates. Kicked to the curb and told that their brand of Wahabi Christianity was not welcome in the Party of Lincoln.

Because the scabrous whores of the Center know they could not ever win anything without riding in the Bitch Seat of the Fundy Right and so, these gutless, unprincipled, willfully blind, morally bankrupt jizzbuckets of the Center climbed right on and went zooming off to electoral success...and back to the 13th Century.

But it comes at an awful price. Like a chronically abused spouse buried alive in fear and denial, the Center wakes up every day with bruises and broken bones and the taste of its own blood in its mouth, and then rushes off to make pancakes for their tormentors.

They absolutely hypnotized themselves in fear of the Straw Boogieman – the Evil Liberal Press/Hollywood/Democrats – and forgot the fact that they themselves had invented this fantasy to scare the rubes. So while they hunkered down and screamed for help against the Terrible Liberal Onslaught (by which I guess they mean balanced budgets, peace, prosperity, compromise, tax reform, welfare reform, GATT, NAFTA, and all the rest of the eternal conservative wish-list that they were handed by Arch Liberal Fiend William Jefferson Clinton...who, for his trouble, was hunted like a wounded animal and impeached by the banshee-shrieking Zealoti GOP) that never came, the scum of the Ultra Right walked in through their unguarded front door and took their party away from them.

They let devils into their beds, and now they’re fucked.

To admit even to themselves what they have allowed to happen – to admit that Bush may have lied even a little bit – is to put their entire self at risk of implosion. Like the Fundamentalists they mock behind closed doors, and prostrate themselves before in public, they have trapped themselves into a corner from which the can’t escape without coming to terms with fact that they were wrong – horribly, monstrously wrong – and their political ideology does not allow for that possibility.

To face the fact that Bush lied to them, even in the smallest particular, is to begin to ask questions about how Presidents should be treated when they lie – based on standards that they themselves established six years ago. To admit error of any kind is to start down a road that they themselves plowed and paved; a road that inexorably leads to impeachment and humiliation.

These people could take their Party back from scum like Wildmon and Falwell, Robertson and Dobson, but to do that means confronting the Truth and taking Action base on an honest assessment of Reality. Until then, Truth, Honest Action and Reality itself are their implacable enemies. Until then, they are forced to contort themselves ever more into postures that would make professional autofellators blush with envy, to hide from the ever louder, ever bloodier and ever more terrifying consequences of their complicity.

Until then, they are slaves.
