For the benefit of future historians, these two paragraph from Bill Daley's 2009 New York Times op-ed --

Keep the Big Tent big

By William M. Daley
Thursday, December 24, 2009

...
All that is required for the Democratic Party to recover its political footing is to acknowledge that the agenda of the party's most liberal supporters has not won the support of a majority of Americans -- and, based on that recognition, to steer a more moderate course on the key issues of the day, from health care to the economy to the environment to Afghanistan.
...

The party's moment of choosing is drawing close. While it may be too late to avoid some losses in 2010, it is not too late to avoid the kind of rout that redraws the political map. The leaders of the Democratic Party need to move back toward the center -- and in doing so, set the stage for the many years' worth of leadership necessary to produce the sort of pragmatic change the American people actually want.

-- are what sealed the deal.

That and his last name.

Lastly, if anyone want to take a wild stab at what the subject of David Brook's next column might be, some people say that, buried in the expected gush of Centrist, Daddy-figure-worshiping platitudes, the careful reader will find the phrase "Back when I was a cub reporter for the City News Bureau in Chicago..."

Others disagree.

"Well Mr. President we've drawn up a list of candidates for the chief of staff position."

"Good, remember, the pick must absolutely alienate the Democratic base and grassroots supporters."

"We know sir, hippie punching DLC centrists only."

"Plus I want to make sure I'm vulnerable to critiques I'm too close to the finance industry."

"We've got a range of investment bankers, financial sector executives and people with experience on wall street lined up, so no problem there."

"We also need to make sure they're neither particularly talented or competent. Someone who got their start through nepotism and failed upwards would be ideal."

"Well sir, that rules out... no no that doesn't rule anyone out."

"Good, good, finally, I also want to leave myself open to republican charges that I'm a corrupt Chicago pol."

"In that case sir, I think you'll agree there's only one real choice..."

You said it, and more importantly, you drew it. Digby highlighted that piece, too, and had some more on Daley's role in the Florida recount. (If you haven't seen it yet, it's worth checking out.)

After reading Daley's paragraphs, I looked around and noticed that I literally was in the center of the room.

He's a miracle worker.

Wait a minute, didn't they already try the whole "centrist" thing? And that's a large contributing factor in the massive Democratic defeat in 2010?

So Daley's article waaaas... dead fuckin' wrong. I'm sure his advice will be "If you govern a liiittle bit to the right of Iran, then the right wing might cozy up to you."

You know, I try my damnedest to avoid being "conspiratorial" but.. Jesus, man. Obama's making it hard for me. I'd have to study at Christine O'Donnel Academy for YEARS to be that bad at politics.

And the "conspiracy" part comes in when I don't think he's bad at politics, I think he knows exactly what he's doing. That this isn't some mistake, this was the intended end game.

That our two political choices are right wing, or oligarchy.

Anymore, "centrist" means smack dab in the center of DC. Fuck the rest of the world.

The Republicans are the Party of Wall Street.

The Democrats are the Other Party of Wall Steet.

Now do you understand politics?

I doubt its a coincidence that Obama's former COS is running for Mayor of Chicago. Sounds like someone made a brilliant deal. Or just a deal.

The only way to save the Nation is to give the oligarchy rope enough to hang itself. Give it what it wants and it will screw the pooch so badly that even the mouth-breathers will take notice. Therefore:
