I could do dozens more, but these two make the point
Began with a clear mission.
Continues to be profitable and influential.

Good Intentions Are Not Enough

Well, when institutional media's in the tank for the political and (pseudo-)religious perspective you're pushing, it's a little easier to stay above water. When right-wing outlets are getting boosts from moneyed interests that want Americans misinformed, they tend not to wither on the vine.
What I really hope is that you (DG) and BG get to live long enough to see the media landscape in the US completely and fundamentally change. I have no idea what that looks like; it's not like all the little grassroots blogs are going to aggregate and become Blogthra or Blogzilla. But I do believe it's going to happen, and I hope you get to be there.
While I agree whole heartedly with the above comments by Anon and I wish DG and BG a long a continued long and happy life I have no faith that the media landscape will change.
"There is a right and a wrong in the universe and the distinction should not be hard to make."
It's easy to see the difference between the GOP and Democrats but the MSM just can't bring itself to tell the truth that the GOP is plotting the next coup (and much more) in plain sight.
The press all of it changed when corporate ownership decided that news is a commodity like anything else that can be bought and sold and it should like anything else make a profit. Mike Royko famously referred to Rupert Murdoch as "the alien" when he bought the Sun Times and he eventually went to the (ugh) Tribune which was unthinkable at the time. Today there is no voice like Royce's in any newsroom. Every employee at all levels of the media landscape are complicit.
The solution? Give money to Drifty. I did. And give money to TPM and any other blogger aggregator that is not on the take. (Full disclosure I grudgingly also subscribe to the Sun Times. Local journalism is barely hanging on. And I am this close to getting Mrs SSGT to drop the NYT.)
