The format was an abject failure.
The "moderators" were an embarrassment.
The questions were straight from the GOP Talking Point PEZ Dispenser. Which is no surprise given who Jeff Zucker hired to run political coverage for CNN:
CNN Is Criticized for Hiring Trump Administration Aide as a Political Editor
Sarah Isgur Flores, a Republican spokeswoman who worked most recently for the Justice Department, has been hired by CNN to help with the network’s political coverage, propelling a Trump administration official directly into a news role for a top cable network.
Her hiring as a “political editor,” not a commentator, led to internal and external criticism of CNN for placing a Republican political operative in a position to help guide daily political coverage, including 2020 presidential campaign news.
In an internal memo on Wednesday announcing the hire, CNN’s Washington bureau chief, Sam Feist, said Ms. Isgur would spend the first few months getting to know CNN, and then “play a coordinating role” in covering politics.
“We’re thrilled that Sarah is coming to CNN,” Mr. Feist wrote. “She brings a wealth of government, political, communications and legal experience to our team.”
Ms. Isgur recently worked as a spokeswoman for the Justice Department, including for Jeff Sessions, the former attorney general whom President Trump fired in November, and for Rod J. Rosenstein, the deputy attorney general who has overseen the special counsel’s Russia investigation. She sent a goodbye email from her Justice Department account on Friday.
She previously worked as a deputy campaign manager for Carly Fiorina, a Republican who ran for president during the 2016 election...
And the post-debate coverage from both MSNBC and CNN was jaw-droppingly tone deaf, suffocatingly smug and just plain stupid.
The entire exercise has been an object lesson in journalism failing in its primary duty to democracy: to inform the public. The more I've thought about this, the more insidious it feels. Tonight we are in for a repeat performance. Brian Williams understands TV, nothing else. He knows how to tilt his head and jaw to look like a movie star delivering the news. To let him frame the debate is malpractice. https://t.co/jLk2B8ZJpi— Jay Rosen (@jayrosen_nyu) July 31, 2019
So will any of this change anytime soon?
Nope.
Behold, a Tip Jar!

TV is a rightwing PAC (political activism center).
TV should have to file with FEC the dollar value of donated airtime to partisan politics.
Rightwing hatetalk radio donates dollar-value to partisan political ads, also.
Not just a CNN Festival bowl of inanne-ry.
DNC had a lot of say.
Every candidate can answer questions how they want or even answer with a non answer. using the time to make a statement on anything they preferred.
It is just too difficult with so many candidate with 15 second explanations that fully covers every detail of health care (for instance). Which allows everything not crammed into that 15 second answer. As "game" at open season.
My leaning preferences are narrowing on the candidates.
I find the sokle issue candidate on Climate Change as my choice for EPA or a climate change czar.
Although Harris is in my narrowed down list. I can se her as our US AG to not just straighten out the DOJ but put it back on course wit the people and make strides .
Buttegeudge is a strong White House spokes person who can coin the phrase and capture the framing in words like, "If Democrats propose socialist leaning policy, GOP will name call us socialists and if Democrats call for moderate center right policies. GOP will call Democrats socialists".
Here is my right wing head exploding proposals that first started as fun and later has gained more legitimacy for me.
Dept of Climate change.
Thing is, They can beat up on Joe, The Coulter geist zombie replacement Tomi. Can slut accuse Harris.
In my desperation, if the Tulsi is nominated. And she is actually at the very bottom of my list.. She gets my vote.
So please folks, be responsible in the primary and give me a shot at voting for one of my top 4.
"She previously worked as a deputy campaign manager for Carly Fiorina..." That alone should disqualify her as assistant toilet flusher at grand central station or as a wet finger in the air wind direction guesser on any weather segment on any local "news" program.
When it finally gets down to Harris, Warren and two other finalist I'll start to listen to a debate otherwise I'll take "extreme climate change weather in the Midwest for $50 Alex." Also I would prefer the people asking the questions to be Driftglass, Bluegirl, Paul Krugman...in the later smaller debates.
Excellent comment on the state of affairs of the so called debates. Back in my early years I worked with a guy with the last name Bates, so naturally we would on occasion refer to him as Master Bates...it appears to be close to describing CNN's current state of debating non functionality.
Off topic:
I understand Mitch McConnell doesn't like being called Moscow Mitch, so here goes: Moscow Mitch, Moscow Mitch, Moscow Mitch, Moscow Mitch, Moscow Mitch, Moscow Mitch...na na na na na...Moscow Mitch is a Moscow Mitch. Geeze Mitch don't have a Moscow cow dude.
Sincerely with all the lack of respect I can muster Mr. Moscow have a cow Mitch, and all the aluminum you can stock pile up your keester.
