Sunday Morning Comin' Down

The GOP, as you know, are the "some of the people" who, as Lincoln observed, can be "fooled all of the time. " Literally.  All of the time.  They are that fucking lost.

But to be willing to be played for absolute chumps decade after decade, can't be a half-ass thing.  You have to really commit to it.  You have to go all-in on being a voluntarily brainwashed meathead, which means as you inevitably sink deeper and deeper into the ravages of lies and depravity that your lifestyle demands, you not only have to burn down and wall off everything that might cause you to catch an unflatteringly reflected glimpse of your malignant idiocy, but you have to learn to take a kind of smirking delight in being seditious, paranoid asshole.

It's got to get good to you, as the kids say.

And a mob of 63 million who are just that far gone -- who laugh as they set everything on fire because at long last the only thing that can assuage their contempt for Reality is inflicting misery on others -- is what the GOP has become.  Top to bottom.  Side to side.  From sea to shining sea.

And having spent years very profitably deflecting and denying and equivocating their was around the obvious fact that the GOP was become a madhouse, the Sunday Shows are now in a sudden and collective tizzy over the fact that, well, let's let Stephen King explain:
The Sunday Shows are a corrupt and decrepit relic of a time long gone: a menagerie of the same, tired, discredited hack and con men who are trotted out year after year to mouth the same, vapid, irrelevant script.  And, as such, they are almost uniquely incapable of providing any insight into what the fuck has gone wrong with our politics, or any clue as to what to do about it.

So this week, fuck 'em.

Instead, if you would like a clue as to how long we on the Left have been fighting the same, zombie horde of voluntarily brainwashed meatheads while the Beltway media ran in circles wailing about the incivility of Everyone On Both Sides, I give you this essay I wrote nearly a decade ago.

Understanding the Right #1

Junkie logic.

The last lie a junkie tells himself isn't "I’m not an addict."

The last lie a junkie tells himself is "My being a addict doesn't matter."

And in the Conservative Crack House of Many Doors, Ronald Reagan was that first cocktail. The first line of coke. The first needle. The first "Holy Mother of God!” WOWGASM that shotguns right through the blood/brain barrier, reformats your entire ethical hard drive, and scrimshaws a brand new Prime Directive on the inside of your skull.

Listen to any aging wingnut sighing and jerking sadly off to a tattered photo of Saint Ronnie -- despite the fact that the catastrophes we are now reaping were sown by his ruinous ideology -- and you can hear every addict who ever lived pining for that first Perfect High. The one they spend the rest of their days chasing, regardless of the size of the debts they run up or the ruined lives they leave in their wake.

Clinton? Objectively, Clinton qualifies as the greatest Center/Right President in history, and with balanced budgets, GATT, welfare reform, NAFTA, DOMA, record surpluses, foreign and domestic terrorists brought to book, and an actual military victory, he arguably delivered to the wingnuts more of everything they ever said they wanted than anyone else.

And they hated him for it.

Why?

Because Clinton was mere addiction maintenance delivered in measured doses under adult supervision: all policy-wonk that wasn’t cut with that industrial-waste-grade bigoted, psychotic bloodlust that gives Conservatism its wild, freebasing edge. Clinton was methadone, and for the hardcore lifestyle junkie, that shit is for babies.

And Dubya? Dubya was meth with a ketamine chaser delivered hammer-and-anvil directly to the lizard brain.

Dubya was 40 million Pig People tired of the hard, fussy job of being a tolerant, powerful democracy finally once-and-for-all blowing America’s family inheritance on an eight-year, blood-drunk bender.

Dubya was the United States crawling through dumpsters at our national soul’s midnight, killing anything that moves, licking out the contents of random baggies, hoping the little white flakes clinging to the plastic is crank and not rat poison, and waking up the next day -- that horrible, horrible sun-also-rises morning after -- broke and twitchy, arguing over what more they can sell off to keep the party going and who they can blame for their gone-to-shit lives.

So what is the last lie a Conservative tells himself? The last lie that the junkies and their suppliers both fight like hell to keep alive and twitching?

That, whether or not their ideology is depraved or deluded, it doesn’t matter because:
“Both side are always equally wrong about everything all the time.”
Doesn’t matter the who or what. The when or how. Doesn’t matter who was driving the bus towards the cliff and who was waving the red flags, throwing their bodies in front of it, trying to make it stop. Doesn’t matter who was trying to douse the conflagration with hoses shredded by 20 year of Reaganism, and who was lobbing milk cartons full of jellied gasoline onto the bonfire.

It is the lie that David Fucking Brooks pushes in the pages of the New York Times.

It is the lie that made David Broder the “Dean” of the Villagers; the lie on which the quarterly profits of the entire Murdoch media empire now rests.

Because these people and thousands more like them are not journalists or “pundits” or expert who offer facts or interpretation or a philosophical framework for illuminating and contextualizing the events of the world.

They are pushers, selling that last, nihilistic lie to the junkies on the Right who will pay any price and cut any throat to escape the fact that they are personally and specifically responsible for the destruction of the country they claimed to love in the name of a God they claim to believe in.

Which is why November 4th is so much more than an election.

November 4th is an Intervention, because the junkie-pusher spiral of the Republican rank-and-file and their leaders has finally hit bottom: we need to heal this country or lose it, and arguing -- "reasoning" -- with wingnuts and their enabling shills and hacks is as pointless as trying to reason with addicts and dealers.

The only way this country is going to be saved is by taking it away from them, school board by school board, city council by city council, congressional district by congressional district, state by state, election by election until they are driven back into the political sewers from whence they came.
In October of 2008 this is exactly how obvious it had already become that the Republican Party -- the entire Republican Party -- had lost its damn mind.

So perhaps you can understand the level of frustration that some of us feel as we watch the same fucking dissembling Beltway muppets still being wildly overpaid to flog the same toxic lies all these years later.

You're so lucky to have a repository for your thoughts and essays. When I was on watch from Nixon through Clinton I had carbon paper, white-out ,5 1/4 and 3.5 inch floppy disks. Still have `em, but without index. Just part of boxes full of such things. My tear-sheets are disintegrating. I should really get busy...fuggit, I'm retired!

I ran out of gas and fingers trying to blog, I ran out of outrage too.
You say what I said with fervor and style. Please remind folks of the serious 90s debates whether having the entire National debt paid off by 2010 was a good idea. There's archival footage of Newt and Grampy Walnuts and many other "fiscal conservatives" saying Nosiree! What we need are tax cuts! (and war!)

Keep up the effort. FWIW, you'll find some solace in fighting the good fight. Maybe even one day you will see this tide of stoopid turn back to something recognizable as sustainable. and human. and good.

I remain...

It's just... never going to get better, is it. I listen to your podcast and I know you and bluegal try valiantly to keep us in hope... but I can't escape the feeling that we are on a sinking ship. That doesn't mean I'm giving up fighting, but I do deeply despair.

I was listening to what is a seriously disappointing both-siderist bastion (NPR) and they were talking about the Illinois budget crisis (hi fellow illini!) Anyway, the question was, who is to blame for this crisis? And the guest averred that, "well, if you're a republican, you'll blame democrats and the unions and if you're a democrat you'll blame the governor." And this was just accepted as a perfectly reasonable conclusion to the whole fucking affair.

WTF??? I yelled at my radio. Just. No. How dare they say this? I don't blame Bruce Rauner for the crisis because I vote democratic, I blame him because IT'S HIS FUCKING FAULT. And this is how the Republicans get away with destroying our civilisation... they lob bombs at our civil democratic society and they are never, ever held to account for it. Even when it's so obvious, out in the open, flagrant and deliberate.

I despair.

The depression kicks in when you realize that, to the Beltway Muppets, the only real problem are the tweets.

The Beltway Muppet middlemen charged with selling Bush's "electoral victory" and his War-For-Empire have their billion dollar "Why don't the silly liberals get it?" Republican PR spin machine smashed on a daily basis as reminders that the Republican in the White House is a no nothing, racist, mobbed up, reality TV star and Russian state asset filling the internet.

I see Trump's entire 2020 re-election campaign being just a one year Twitter cleanse, so 2/3rds of the media can spend a year crowing about an imaginary Presidential Turn Around; fawn over Just-Think-of-What-The-Master-Negotiator-Can-Do-Now-That-He-Is-Focused; and fear monger about ISIS.

Driftglass and readers...Don't quit....ever. Stay the course of decency and adult behavior. Stay for the sake of our generation and those following us. We don't have the money of the 1%ers to buy us the school boards, city councils etc. but we can change the vocabulary (as per George Lakoff). All the regulations the administration has killed must be called protections. Our protections were taken away for profit of the 1%.
I liked when the native people's NO DAPL named themselves "water protectors" rather than protestors. They were viewed as protestors often by the Eric Prince's style police with mercenary weapons, but the world saw Protectors. Stay the course. Thank you for your writing Driftglass. Thank you for your readers.
