Internet Kitties Bid the Vinyl Adieu
Found a nice home for Zappa, Beefheart and B.B. at the used record shop Saturday.
Over the next few days over goes Bowie (pictured above) and Floyd, Leher and Newhart, Carlin and Cosby and another bunch of onesies and twosies.
Clearing out the castle and prepping it for sale will take a few weeks (and getting rid of it awhile longer) but continuing to lug around crates of vinyl no longer makes any sense, and the notion of trading one form of petroleum for the funds to buy enough of another form of petroleum to fuel the truck that will take me and the kitties to a new home has a charming symmetry to it.
Next week: Cutting my library down to something that can fit into two large bookcases. Gonna make my local library very happy :-)

not enough Bowie
About your books, perhaps you could burn some of your old Ayn Rand, post a video, and see if you can get some of the troglodytes to have a revolt over their Books Dictated by God being burned by a heathen?
Mike.K.
The vinyl I had is now gone last year. It's what happens and what had to be done. Life did continue.
Dude, if I lived in your neighborhood I would so be at your house right now.
Nice looking kitties (or 1.5 kitties, from what I can see). I wish them safe (and well-contained in carriers) travels. Vet-supplied kitty downers have been useful when I had to move; either that or some headphones.
Good decision getting out of Chicago. US big cities will become places to fucking flee over the course of the next 20-30 years, so it's best to beat the rush. :-)
I don't have any vinyl. All my old music recordings are on cassette-tape, which they don't even make anymore. I'm amazed at how many of them are still in good playing condition 20+ years later.
Wow, I'm actually increasing my vinyl collection! Just ship all that Bowie right this way!
not enough Bowie
But an excellent Tubes disc visible in one of the crates.
If it was me the Zappa would hurt the most to part with. Lovely Kitties.
Vinyl is IN these days.
Or storing all your music on a few 2 TB hard drives and playing it directly through your computer into an outboard DAC.
Either way, good fortune to you as you make these big life changes!!
My last move was 10 years ago and left ALL my vinyl and a sweet ass Denon turntable to a very good 15 year old bass player who snapped it up and is prolly kickin ass on the dive bar circuit as we speak. Pay it forward and don't look back.
*SIGH* My vinyl has been sitting in the bottom of my spare room closet, untouched since I moved 8? 9? years ago. And un-touchable for 2 years now since the turntable I had went away with my old 'rack' stereo in a donation to Goodwill. Perhaps I should find those old records a good home now too. Gonna miss 'em but I think you're right, probably time to face up to reality & just let them go.
Anyway a question to you, DG:
Some of the bloggers out there post weekly lists of "random top 10" songs found on their iPods/MP3 players: How about posting a random top 10 of your books? Either stuff you're keeping, or, stuff you're letting go (with or without regrets). Just a thought -
Keep up the great blogging!
Mike from CA
p.s. Holy crow that'salotta Bowie.
How about listing the books and offering us our choice as a fundraiser premium? I'd get a kick out of an Ayn Rand signed by Driftglass. Hell, I'd chip in a few more bucks just for the halibut.
Just did the same kind of downsizing myself last year. Moved from a house to one big room.
Actually don't miss all the books I unloaded. Can only speak for myself, but what I'm left with after a severe culling is still plenty and plenty good.
It feels like moving in the right direction to let go of most of my stuff and get everything down to basics that matter.
Congratulations on your new life and all the best to the kitties too.
I can't find it in my heart to even touch the vinyl with anything except adoration. I used to store them in the bottom of the audio cabinet (and visitors would "ooh" and "ahh" when viewing them), but now they live in a air-conditioned storage bin.
You have made me think hard about getting rid of some of my books though. I just hate getting rid of anything that I really love (and think I might really need to read something from later without bothering with a visit to the library or bookstore - silly me).
And houses are selling in Chicago?
Salute!
PS: Right after I posted my comment, it occured to me that I don't really know that you're departing from the environs of the Chicagoland area. I only assumed that because it seems like a rather good idea to my way of thinking. :-)
