Jejune for the Misbegotten

going_vague3
David Brooks has a new column in the New York Times today.

You can read it here.

Or, if you'd rather not chug Mr. Brooks' 1,000th identically constructed and delivered sippy-cup of insipid, room-temperature, Centrist spoo, here is your executive summary.

It involves the President taking some "big stuff" from the two, equally at-fault sides of the political spectrum (As far as I can tell, according to Bobo, Liberals would get some nonspecific "industrial policy", while Conservatives would get to take Social Security and Medicare out behind the swing set and shoot them in the head.)

Then "marrying" them (which is such a disturbingly pre-pubescent incomprehension of how marriage actually works that it opens a whole, new, terrifying door into Bobo's psyche.)

Then everybody makes Reasonable Compromises to make the system work better.

Which would build "momentum and trust."

Then everybody gets what they want.

Yay!

After which June Cleaver calls Bobo in from where he was playing politics with toy soldiers in his tree fort for a nice supper.

Which would stand a chance of working...if this were the Republican Party of 1957, from a completely different Universe, with a completely different media, history and economic and political system.

In other words, to abuse the famous quote from Eugene O'Neill:
"There is no present David Brooks column or future David Brooks column -- only the same masturbatory David Brooks drivel from 1995, happening over and over again -- now."

Too much spoo. Not enough fleem. But, at the heart of every enduring Bobolistic variant on BSDI!! is the little visceral nugget of self-hatred that any sentient being in Bobo's wing-tips cannot fully purge. Any being that has a modicum of self-awareness, that is. And whatever Bobo is, he's not a true believer.

As usual, the commenter's to his post are tearing DFB's a new posterior orifice.

However, I especially liked the part where he says, "Others have talked about learning from the Chinese and Singaporeans." Translation: "We must destroy the wage base of Murka. Let them eat Mickey D's fries with that."

Hey, look: D. Brooks makes lots and lots of money out of saying over and over again, "Can't we all just get along?.....especially you Democrats!"

That's all that matters to Mssr. Brooks. I'm waiting for his column explaining how the Obama/Dem cave-in to the Real Ruler of America --Mitch McConnell--is a fine, fine example of "centrism."

Dg,

Your essays are to die for.

But your titles?

Sublime!

If everyone doesn't come here at least once a day to partake in an almost divine (but is there one really?) intellectual/comedy extravaganza experience, they are missing out on one of the good things in life.

And there aren't very many left.

Social Security is now no more - and it has (finally, according to Rethug best planning practices) joined (under the true compromise(d) President (a Rethuglicrap)) all the other dying safety net (New Deal) programs that began to disappear/lose funding under the Raygun Empire.

And its trading off was bought for pennies on the dollar.

Long live the empire.

Long live the emperor.

(Long Live Driftglass!!!)

while Conservatives would get to take Social Security and Medicare out behind the swing set and shoot them in the head.)
